Actually, regarding Dark Meta Knight's battle ... Dark Meta Knight's boss AI in the games he appears tends to be a lot more aggressive than regular Meta Knight. Whereas Meta Knight will fight honorably, Dark Meta Knight uses dirty tactics in his patterns to try and force you into a trap. That's the guy who plays too much Kirby in me speaking :P

It's so stupid, they literally paid M2 a lot of money to have sonic 1 and now sonic 2 remade _again_ for the Sega Ages line on Switch. Why!? I mean, there's already some ports of what originally were just mobile games to the Switch, like the Boulder Dash 30th anniversary one that I've been enjoying a lot. People aren't averse to buying games that originated on phones, and obviously their existence proves it's not hard to port them to consoles either. And anyway even if they're technically remakes, they look and feel exactly the same as the originals except with the wide-screen and it running smoother. People don't think of them as mobile games, but basically just upgraded versions of the originals. So WHY don't they save themselves money, and probably earn way more from sales, and just port the 3 games over? Like jesus christ, seriously It feels constantly like Christian Whitehead embarrassed Sega with how good he is. Like they said things after the success of Sonic Mania that indicated they were embarrassed by how well it did while their own attempts at new sonic games were constantly trashed (even the really good ones like Generations), and they basically said Sonic Mania is the last classic sonic, they're never making a sequel. Which is just flushing money down the toilet. And so Christian Whitehead is now working on Freedom Planet 2 instead, as it's basically a sonic game. The first Freedom Planet literally began as a romhack of Sonic but they made it into its own thing, and it does play fairly differently. I'm excited for the new one especially with his involvement, it'll have to be the series for fans who want more classic sonic, because Sega sure as hell aren't giving us any more. How I pray for there one day to be a Sonic Mania 2. Like, the first Sonic Mania was designed to be a hypothetical sonic game for the saturn that never got made, which is why the 3D character models in the special stages look very chunky and like a saturn or PS1 character model. So how about this, a Sonic Mania 2, still 2D, but have it be a hypothetical Dreamcast game! A game that can run on a dreamcast and uses its power for added visual sparkle and functionality, have perhaps 2.5 looking backgrounds like the new Mega Man 11 although keep the sprites 2D, like Strider 2 on the PS1 which I've always thought looked great. Ah it's only a dream though. Sega will continue to make stupid decisions, it's pretty much their mission statement. I'll keep buying the new Football Manager games they publish every year though, that's still the most consistently great game series there is.

This has got to be my favorite Kirby game by far. It might be because i grew up with this game but i remember playing it so much over and over, without even beating it. In fact it took me a couple years before i beat it because of my dumb baby brain. Maybe thats why I love it so much, I never played it to beat it but just to have fun, and when i did find something new it was exciting! even now when i revisit it i dont have a problem with the design of levels or the 1 hit mechanic. I also disagree about the chests collectibles (except the food and 1 up ones) I dont think Kirby really needs to get stronger in terms of power when he gets a chest, health upgrades are fine but actual power increases would just feel out of place IMO. This is definitely a style i want to see a return to in future Kirby games, but with online and more rewards for finding chests, But great review Johnny even if i dont agree with it.

This is probably my favorite Kirby game. I love just wandering around and trying to figure how to get the map or get to the next area. Its a game you cant just rush through you gotta just mess around and have fun. Ive never got to play the multiplayer for it but it seems like it would be the best in the franchise with the fact that everyone gets to play as Kirby. Also figuring out how to get those grey blocks destroyed I learned from Nighgmare in Dream land and it carried over so when I first saw them I knew exactly what to do. It also has my favorite Kirby sound track. Track 7 is easily my favorite song in the whole game.

@Ryan Fanstone Where did I say that? I actually think the exploration is really good. There are some parts I got a little stucks on but after looking around more and trying other abilities and all that I would be able to figure out where to go and what to do.

@palmermoynihan2628 4 жыл бұрын
@Ryan Fanstone I will agree the map system can be really lacking sometimes. I thought the collectibles were good it gave you music to listen to, different colours for kirby, and extra health. Some of them arent worth it as well though like when it just gives you food or a 1up. The whole losing the ability thing I dont have an issue with. I get that Super Star didnt do it that way so this could be seen as a step backwards and same for Nightmare in Dreamland, but I excuse it because there is usually the ability you need in the room you're in or the next room over. I can't think of a time where I had to backtrack all the way to get this one specific ability and try and get all the way through a place without getting hit. And if you do get hit you can get the ability back.

When I was a wee child, this was my favorite Kirby game, and still holds a lot of value for me (even if I agree that the mapping system and the goals are pointless). This game along with Air Ride are more fun to meander with than trying to get everything for completion sake though. Too bad they didn't go back to the formula where you can go to any world and fight any boss you wished.

Thank you for being a real human and not praising it blindly. Seriously, I have quite a few problems with this game because of the one-hit powerup loss in a Metroidvania world, one-direction doors, and useless minimaps until you get the real maps. ...and there's a reason the Smash ability returned in a later Kirby game.

You're supposed to call the other Kirbys in to help you move those big stone blocks, if you inhale it they will all do so at the same time and it moves easy peasy. At 7:40 the green Kirby is even waiting there to do that, I never knew you could slowly nudge one along banging the ground with the sword or stone... You can also call them in if they have a copy ability you need to bypass a certain obstacle, quite a few abilities destroy those metal blocks and one of them usually has it, like at 7:52 when the green Kirby had a fire ability and could have dealt with the block for you. That's why there's so much emphasis on the phone!

Amazing Mirror is one of my favorite Kirby games! I think the game loop was more entertaining than you gave it credit for. You know what your goal is and it's just a matter of accomplishing it, and the game gives you the freedom to take your time and do just that at your own pace without cutscenes or level transitions slowing things down. Running around a world, you're going to be wandering a bit aimlessly at first unless you can form a mental map of where you're going, until you eventually stumble upon either the map, or a new area, in which the loop repeats. From there, it's a race to see if you can navigate yourself through every room until you get to the boss of said area so you can progress through the game. Sure, copy abilities are strewn around here and there, and there are collectables all over the place to find, but those are just extra little goodies to make your journey more enjoyable! Power ups are only meant to enhance the player's abilities and aren't ever needed for progression so you're not punished for losing certain power ups, and chests ONLY exist to give you nice, optional collectables for 100% completion, something later Kirby games would really embrace. (Keychains, stickers and puzzle pieces from Triple Deluxe, Robobot and Star Allies had a very similar system to this, where you could rush through the game and ignore these collectables, but if you wanted to 100% the game, you'd have to go at a slower pace and explore each level to find secrets you might be missing.) I don't think it fails to be a Metroidvania by making these "collectables" useless because at the end of the day, the game doesn't ask you to even go near them. Power ups and chests could be deleted from the game and you'd still have the same gameplay loop of exploring the worlds at your own pace, navigating towards boss rooms, until you've beaten the game. That's not to say it's flawless though, I just think that optional collectables/power ups and a lack of key and lock gameplay makes it a bad game. Navigating through areas without a map can be a pain, and if you don't get lucky, you could either spend too long looking for an area's map, or you might not find it entirely, reaching an area's boss room by accident before you can even get to the exploration part. On top of that, collectables can be a PAIN to find without any sort of indication as to whether or not you've missed a chest or not. (Though, iirc, big rooms on the map are ones with collectables inside, while smaller rooms are clean. However, the game doesn't tell you if you've collected the item in that room yet or not.) It's also not clear as to how the map works either. (I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't even aware the map tells you if a door is one-way or not in your playthrough.) More, as you mentioned, it's one of the more frustrating Kirby games combat wise, since getting hit is enough to get rid of your power up. Regardless though, while it's not a perfect Kirby game, I think it's one of the better entries in the series for those who think a non-linear Kirby game would be fun! It's not entirely a Metroidvania, since it doesn't have a key and lock system of progression, but as I mentioned before, there's no reason it NEEDS a system like that in place.
@DeftFunk
@DeftFunk 4 жыл бұрын
There actually is an indication of whether or not you've missed treasure in a room. Though it's one of the many things the game doesn't make clear. If you've got all the treasures in the room, the square on the map will be flashing. If you're missing a treasure, the square will not flash. It does not matter how big the square is.
@delaneyelekes8660
@delaneyelekes8660 4 жыл бұрын
@@DeftFunk Ohhh right! I remember that now! I guess all the game really needs to do is give you a guide on how to use the map then? I imagine most players didn't even know you could tell where a door leads, if it's a one-way door or not, if a room has treasure in it or if it's been collected or not.

Amazing Mirror, I was first exposed to in 2008: Back in Grade VIII, I had found a cartridge with the game casually laying on the floor of the gym at what used to be Eastern/Thurgood Marshall Junior High here in Lynn, Massachusetts (the original building where the school functioned is still present, but it's been discontinued as of 20I6, due to the construction of a new building for TMJH/TMMS some blocks away); I didn't truly get to play it in its entirety until 2009, when I had gotten the Zelda Edition variant of the DS Lite and hotwired a Motorola Phone Charger to work with the handheld to keep the battery alive, and this was mandatory, as the SRAM Battery in my cartridge of Amazing Mirror was Dead on Arrival when I had gotten it and thus playing the game constantly for days was the only way for me to play it proper. To this day, I have only completed the game once, and that was in Early 2009; due to the SRAM Battery being dead, there was no way for me to replay my save, so all of the collectibles that I had gotten along the way were never stored, which is an honest shame and part of why I started replaying the game on VisualBoy Advance Rerecording to finally experience what I couldn't north of eleven years ago; this title is definitely not for the weak in Single Player (especially if you ever do a MAX% run) and it will suck up hours of your day if you truly want to get the best out of it, Symphony of the Night/Nocturne in the Moonlight is the only other title that has truly taken up my time this way and I still find it to be worth revisiting every once in a while, not many other entries in the Kirby series truly pale in comparison to Amazing Mirror and the amount of spaciousness and strategy that it offers allows for limitless forms of replayability on plentiful fronts, especially for the Speedrunner demographic. (:

thats kinda not really a great design for this game(the chest are pretty pointless in this game as a metroidvania shouldnt have lives and the food could just be spread out or put in smaller chest with upgrades and ways to continue being put in specially marked chest,at least in great cave offensive they were neat little collectibles.)i agree with johnny that it didnt structure itself like a metroidvania and when i first saw it outside of the master hand crazy hand battle and the dark mind fight(outside the forced padding of 4 different boss fights.)its honestly pretty forgettable for a kirby game and if the metroidvania concept were to be attempted again(i'd rather see an rpg,air ride 2, or a 3d game 1st though.)i think it would be better to go a route similar to milky way wishes.

Imo this game was amazing heh in its time and still is now! I hope whatever new Kirby game comes goes back to this ambitious Metroidvania style like one planet that interconnects with each other like one continuous quest! Just fix the issues this game had like take more hit points before losing your copy ability, better chest drops but keeping the non-consumables like the spray paints(wish this returned overall to the new games!), no one way doors and maybe remove the "goal" doors and better map!

I mean, there's a lot that could be done with this concept. Especially in how they would handle chests. Seriously the best part about this game is the heart upgrades and skin sprays, but they could do so much more with that. And honestly I love the map design, but they need to give you the map right off the bat in a new area. It's an overall pain to get from one place to another without one. The map design is also a little too much, again the one way doors, and I find a lot of issues with how they lock away chests. Overall, more work and better UI could make a really good game, especially online play.

@MultiTarded Copy Merging is just a way to create boring one-attack moves. If it had more depth and K64 had more difficulty, then maybe it would have been a good decision to come back to that idea, but in the way it is - no, after you discover them all (which you do very quickly) there's no point in 90% of them in K64.
@marx4538
@marx4538 4 жыл бұрын
@MultiTarded The game's controls felt slow, most of the abilities were boring and discovering them was a one-time, shallow thing. There's literally nothing "perfect" in that formula, collectible idea was taken from previous games and the only fun abilities are way too broken, so that leaves us with 90% boring abilities and 10% extremely broken ones. It's not perfect, not even close.
@marx4538
@marx4538 4 жыл бұрын
@MultiTarded A Kirby game is a platformer or beat-em-up like, not a sandbox. The idea of finding new powers would get boring before you even find all of them, and almost none of them are useful. Experimentation only gave useless abilities that weren't used to get Shards or actually have fun, but to waste the player's time. Kirby's Adventure allowed to experiment and discover abilities while still being a very well done platformer with abilities being actually fun to use, and instead of every single collectable hiding behind a ability block, Adventure had actual puzzles to solve.

I'm surprised you didn't mention how inconsistent this game is with copy abilities having multiple attacks! For every Sword and Smash, there's...fire and burning separate once again for some reason. I definitely agree the game has a serious issue with dead ends, how frustrating losing your abilites after being hit once is and very lame rewards (something I feel Squeak Squad improves upon despite dropping the Metroidvania design), but I dunno, I still have a lot of fun plowing through it, maybe it's a mix of having a soft spot from being my 2nd game in the franchise and my first foray into the Metroidvania genre. It's definitely something I'd like to see revisited and done better down the line, the multiplayer could be accesible through online for once.

This game would have benefited from a modified version of how Kirby 64 handled powers. Imagine if you had a power selection screen like in Milky Way Wishes. However, there is a dial on one side and a single space on the other. The dial are your "Core Abilities", permanent powers you can activate at will, and the only ones that can destroy the progression-blocking obstacles in your way. (There would be an empty slot in the dial if you ever wanted Normal Kirby at will.)You unlock these by finding them like in Milky Way Wishes, or a competent Metroid-Vania. The blank space on the other side is your typical power gained from eating an enemy, and is the one that you lose with a single hit. So, you would play through the game, and you could line up the temporary power with a permanent power on the dial and get the Kirby 64 fused Ability. Having it on a dial means that you would cycle through fused powers at will. Optional goodies and secrets would be the only things that require fused powers to access. (Also, the Smash power would probably override the dial system and be a temporary ultimate ability. The game's 100% bonus would probably be unlocking a button to let you activate the Smash ability at will, so other than temporarily swapping to an ability to open a pathway, you could potentially play an entire New Game Plus with Smash turned on. Or you could have the New Game Plus just remove all of the progression obstacles and give you the option to play with permanent Smash ability.)
