For the longest time, I actually bought the argument that Stewart was given the Oscar for this role because Robert Donat "stole" the one he should have won for "Mr Smith Goes To Washington" the year previously.Then, I actually watched this performance from beginning to end--he WON the Academy Award for this role and no mistake.

Jimmy was a good singer so it seems. He sang in two other movies, one I've seen is called Pot O' Gold with Paulette Goddard. One of my favorites!!

i think the general view is actually that Clark Gable should have won for Gone with the Wind in 1939 actually..:o But for me, it was a ridiculously competitive years, with the masterful Olivier also in the mix. Personally, i think they got it right because Donat had to achieve something pretty remarkable in Chips: even now many struggle to successfully portray a man from his youth to his old age.
