Tara, This is for you , My daddy was born Sept 13, 1935. Born on the Boyd Place, In North Texas, The Original Boyds traveled from the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee to settle in North Texas. The Mandolin and the Fiddle was King.Families got together and simply played for their entertainment over a meal. Pop played a fiddle all his life and all the way up to his near 90's I'm pretty sure he wishes he had your talent, that talent that makes that fiddle talk to the song, well done Tara. Thank You!

Very nice! I've listened to many covers of this song, as well as the Tysons with their original version, and they're ALL good. By the way, and Ive never heard anyone say it before, the father in this song is probably right about the young man. I think he may well leave the daughter crying. There is nothing in the song suggesting why the 21-year-old boyfriend "just out of the service, looking for his fun" is such a prize ...

I went to see Judy Collins in Lafayette a couple of years ago, It was an opportunity to see her live I could not pass on. she was in great voice (80yrs ), and gave a very warm vibe to her mostly boomer crowd. The model of professionalism, as Her guitar got mishandled at the airport and did not make it to the gig. She had to sing with only her pianist backing her , reeling off hit after hit while telling stories of her personal and musical triumphs and failures.. However, I and many of the attendees were a little let down that she left this one out. So, thanks, your version.. brings back the same feeling from my folkie days in the 60's. What a great song.

Beside, your lovely voice, there is the sweet violin instrumental ornamenting but not stepping on the vocal. Is that your own arrangement? You clearly practiced your “variations” learning classical violin. Enchanting!
@TaraDunphy11 ай бұрын
Hi Allen, that's just what I came up with in the moment. Trying not to get in the way of the vocal is key, something so important for a backing instrumentalist to keep in mind. The space is just as important as the notes!

I absolutely love Summer Wages. I just recently saw Steve Earle perform and he closed the show with a lovely cover of it.
@Mo_Taser5 ай бұрын
@@TaraDunphy There used to be a video here on YT of him doing Summer Wages at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. I think it's had a regular place in his setlist for a long time. This is an excerpt from a post I made on Ian Tyson's Facebook page shortly after he died. There were no cities nearby or even any moderately sized towns. We were about 10 miles west of the small town of Caroline in the unincorporated Clearwater-Ricinus area of Western Alberta. We were out of the range of any radio stations, or so I initially thought. On my shitty little transistor radio, and possibly because of some weird atmospheric goings on or because of a fissure in the spacetime continuum, although I couldn't get any stations from Red Deer or Rocky Mountain House only 50 miles away, I could though get a few from Texas and the American Deep South over 2,000 miles away. I would sometimes hear, emanating from a city in Texas and then bouncing off the Earth's upper atmosphere, a song called "Someday Soon", written by Ian Tyson and performed by Judy Collins. I hadn't even hit puberty yet but I would romanticize the shit out of that song, and I knew that someday I wanted a girl to feel about me the same way the girl in "Someday Soon" felt about her boyfriend. I wanted to be the guy romanticized in that song. Even at that young age, I knew I must make that happen. Then, a year or two later, I again heard magic emanating from the American Deep South. This new song linked up with my psyche on a primal level that was well beyond my biological age, and it took me on a journey to the Pacific Ocean and the forests of British Columbia where I would live much of my life in the future. I heard what is still in my opinion one of the greatest songs about Canada ever written-Summer Wages, again, written by Ian Tyson. As a kid I couldn't believe that a Canadian was on the radio and singing about the city I loved-Vancouver-and singing about it from the sweltering heat in the heart of Texas and about the same things I already loved but would grow to love so much more as I grew older-the forests of British Columbia, the oceans, and of Vancouver itself. Many years later, that same song would take on a much deeper meaning for me, when on the ocean and amidst the "big stands of timber" which still gaze over the shorelines of Tofino Inlet today, I lost a friend to the stormy seas there. He would play Summer Wages on his guitar. But alas, that is a tale for another time. Rest in peace, big man.
@uhdudewhy7980 Жыл бұрын
Great job. Enjoyed. I couldn't help but notice that all the chords you play are also the chords used in America's song "Sister Golden Hair." I wonder if "Someday Soon" influenced America while they wrote "Sister Golden Hair." lol
@TaraDunphy11 ай бұрын
That's certainly possible - it wouldn't be the first time! I'm not familiar with that song so I'm going to look it up and compare. Thanks for listening!
