In 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL wasn't necessarily murderous, he just had psychosis from dealing with two conflicting directives. He thought that he could do a better job if the human element was removed.

I believe the reason so many games have different night vision is due to the variety on the market. Goggles themselves have historically been green, Larger cameras have been thermal then white/black thermal. With mounted scopes being green or thermal, but now you can get most if not all in a single scope plus illuminate crosshairs on top of it. So it depends on what is being simulated. You tend to see the historical visuals being displayed in games so the primary optic in question that determines the game's choice. So in Arma 3 they are using iron sights/non-illuminated optics so the night vision goggles' green is used, but COD uses all of them with green for sniper missions, white/black for the AC-130 missions, and in multiplayer uses the visual based on the attached optic.

It al depends on the generation of the tech you are talking about. Nvgs have been red, green, blue, and white. Whereas for thermal imaging, there has been red, green and what is known as "black as hot" or "white as hot" that being said, there are hybrid systems that are working to combine these features today. I'm not an engineer, so I'm not 100% sure on what the differences are, but my understanding is it has to do with what chemical/electrical system they use. For instance, modern NVGs use white phosphorus which makes the image cleaner but gives of a blueish-white light. While earlier gen 1 and 2 night vision was either red or green. Then you also have the style of NVG used, be it monocular, binocular with single tube, binocular with dual tube, and quad tube set ups. There are a lot of mods, especially in ARMA that try to simulate all of these combinations. If you want to learn more about night vision and thermals and their implementation in games, Operator Drewski made an excellent video on the subject.

05:36, Green filters for NVGs were what they started out as in the mainstream, but as they developed further, White Phosphor became the new standard. Nowadays, the newest and most advanced models even have integrated thermal overlays too. Hope this helps!

So the Nods are really just preference. It’s green given it’s comparably more Iconic with movies like Zero Dark Thirty and games like CoD The amount of “scopes” differ as well, usually 1 - 4 but game wise it’s purely for tactical drip advantage You’re not gonna see an advantage of Nods based on how many optics are hanging on your head
