When I was a child, I envisioned VR/gaming/simulation as an opportunity to explore new, complex, exotic, and impossible environments. I foresaw it as a chance for doctors to swim around people's bloodstream or airways to see what's wrong, or for the disabled to experience life as we live it, or for robot operators to be able to maneuver drones in safety. Never in a million years did I imagine that they'd transfer the eternal grift of the real estate bubble to the virtual world. Jesus cyberdecking Christ what is this timeline...

It's one of those things that has cool or at least fun applications, yet is being overshadowed by scummy entities. Instead of innovating and making it better, they've muscled their way in, taking claim of all the associated language and then try to sell you the bare minimum of effort. And with the rise of more "legit" but controlling companies like Amazon and Meta, even the less scammy ones will be tainted by trying to have control of your life through it. (Can you imagine having to go to work with your VR headset all the time? That you have to buy from them? When a webcam or even just email would have sufficed?) Being associated with things like crypto scams and shallow, buzzword filled marketing pushes means that eventually, even trying to develop something for it is going to have to overcome the hurdle of people's reaction being "ugh another one of those things?" The last few years they've basically grabbed concepts that have been slowly growing for decades and are trying to speedrun them into the ground.

The amount of times where play to earn ads show up is a constant reminder of why ad blocker exists. Ad settings are completely useless and requests to opt out and even have your ad data deleted only encourages these ads to appear more (even with ad personalization turned off). Even when I do get a response, they only give a generic, yet evasive answer that only makes them sound like they care. Basically, they say "no" while pretending to say "yes". Some ads even force open the play store, which has the potential to spread malware considering that it has to open your web browser first. This is a major scam issue in soo many levels. What's stopping someone from creating an ad with the sole purpose of spreading ransomware?

my thoughts exactly watching this. buying land in SL is expensive, but you can actually DO things with it. you can make a club, a mall, a museum, all sorts of things. Even become a virtual landlord (ugh). But there's certainly ways to also make some money on that content since you can turn lindens into real currency. Not to mention how LL controls the economy so while there are fluctuations, they're not huge with the bust/boom we see in actual economies. Even then, if you don't own land, you can still work for places as a host or dj or other things, or create things, and still earn money for your labor.

The thing about Earth 2 is that all the "new and exciting" future updates are all just ways to get players to give them more money. They're announcing new tiers of systems they don't even have available for "players" to interact with yet. Despite the claims of being a game that accurately replicates Earth (it won't), even the gameplay that it will have is just a series of hoops to jump through in order to cash out. You're not earning a single cent from those resources until you've done those steps- and then you have to hope that other players will want to buy it for some reason. And they seem more focused on keeping players from bailing, than actually developing any kind of game.

Regarding Web3 being a buzzword, I'm not sure about that. It's a descriptive word, just as free-to-play, MMORPG, or FPS words are. They are describing the mechanics of the game. Web3 games are giving players agency and ownership over their time and assets acquired in those specific games. The NFTs part is somehow shadowing that and it is a much easier vector to attack, but once you see the reality behind the mechanics, you'll end up agreeing with the web3 space. I've been a gamer all my life, and I see web3 games as the next step for the industry. Anyway, I'm more than happy to show you guys around Evaverse! Let me know below if you guys want to try it out :)

you summed it up correctly with one word "belief". just like ANY economy, including real life money economies, it's all 100% BELIEF. We believe that little piece of paper is worth what's written on it. We believe a company will do well, so we put those little pieces of paper into it. The same applies here. And just like with real economies, as soon as we stop believing it's worth anything, it comes crashing down.

paper money is backed by international banks and exchanges. When you invest in apple you have a track record of apple delivering products and you invest in where you see their trajectory. Both the examples have real world interactions and products. Belief doesn’t come into terms for an apple. Any comparison to crypto or NFTs to markets that offer physical goods is just incorrect.

Woah! Pretty awesome you're covering Evaverse! Even if it is negative, that's cool, I understand the concerns. Here's my take as a player in Evaverse. No game has figured out a successful real money economy in the history of gaming. So why the hate for gaming studios trying? I guess because there's a lot of scams out there. OK true. You create KZbin videos for a living. There's a lot of scam videos out there, so should no one be able to make videos for a living? Why can't people play video games for a living? Only through KZbin, Twitch or other streaming platforms is acceptable for you? It would be awesome if Evaverse can be the 1st to build a sustainable economy, that is the goal. This game is not a pump and dump from my perspective. Of course I could be wrong. Do a little research into the gaming studio Battlebound and the developers behind it. They come from popular games and are all doxed. NFT's create barrier to entry same as the $60 price tag on traditional games that create barrier to entry. You have a problem with the high cost of items. $60 barrier is cool, $5k is not. Don't buy them, you can play for free. High price cosmetic in game items people are willing to buy. People have a ton of money in crypto, that's one of the reasons along with demand for why things are expensive. And yes the expectation that it will be worth more in the future. There's a boat load of money floating around on the internet. The market is setting the price. I see a lot of channels white knighting for the players about high cost NFT items. While also being multi millionaires like yourself from the internet. Muta doesn't have a problem with affiliate marketing. Use promo code SOG at gfuel plastered all over. Does gfuel make money from selling their products? It's ok for me to buy an extremely unhealthy energy drink that costs $0.30 to make for $20, but you draw the line at NFT's. Yes, some of the NFT's are expensive, but The NFT's are products as well. It's all a market, there's risk in everything. Spend your money on what you choose. You pose the questions: What do these items do that you couldn't have already done in game before? What actual value does any of this crap provide? They are simply in game items just like traditional in game items. The difference with NFT's are the players can personally hold them and trade them outside of the game. They are provably limited to a certain amount and you can see who has what and the history of the items. You can know that a certain item is truly rare and flex in game with it. There's really not much to it, people spend money on video game items, a lot of money!

Even buying virtual land in "video game worlds" made more sense than this. Buying a plot of land in, say, a strategy game actually has some type of meta effect. This is literally just buying an expensive plot of IRL land in a virtual world just to say that you own it? This model should be called Pay2Flex.
