one night, i woke up not knowing who or where i was. i laid there for a few moments, just enjoying that sensation. when i figured out where i was, i remembered who i was.

Yeah... I think that developing an 'identity' or conception of 'the self' can be an enjoyable endevour. Impetus is significant, though. It appears that altering one's 'identity', 'conception of self', or whatever other synonomous term you fancy is a very common (if not the absolute most common) visceral, coping strategy that people engage in when experiencing 'Existential Crisis'. Obviously, under those conditions the exercise will be anything but 'fun' and I think the prospect that engaging in the aforementioned will prove cathartic or helpful in any regard is beyond dubious. When it comes to the topic of 'Existentialism' I tend to appreciate Camus' position more than any of his contemporaries (including my All Time Favourite Philosopher, Jean Paul Sartre). I very much agree that existence is quintessentially absurd. One 'neat' exercise that I would highly recommend any philosophy enthusiast with the vaguest interest in Camus' or more specifically the concept of 'absurdism' to try is to write an extremely short narrative. Something very simple. For instance, 'A Man Eating an Apple'. Here's the catch though.. You must use only 'technical vernacular'. So, instead of the word 'apple', you can say something to the effect of 'a bright red', crispy fruit produced by 'Malus domestica', or as it's more commonly referred to as, an 'Apple Tree'. Then add a bunch of details Re/ apples that 99.9999% of people could not be more disinterested in. When it comes to the word 'eating', provide an in depth and comprehensive explanation of all the most significant biological processes that one's body performs while engaging in the practice that we call 'eating'. The more detail, the better. When you're finally done read your glorious 'Magnum Opus' aloud. What kind of thoughts and emotions does this conjure up. If you're anything like me, you'll no doubt think about the very familiar concept of 'Symbol' or 'Form' and the corresponding Objective Phenomenon that it refers to. From Plato's incredibly famous 'Cave Anology', to Jung's concept of 'Archetypal Symbol' and corresponding archetype, to Kant's Dialectic who's name escapes me at the moment, which was very reminiscent of Plato's 'Theory of Forms', the relation between 'symbol' and corresponding Objective phenomenon is a concept that never seems to go 'out of style' as far as The 'Western Philisophical Canon' is concerned. There's been many different iterations proposed throughout the historical pantheon, but they all can be construed as 'mere variations on a theme'. Anyway that you slice it though, there's no getting around the very overt fact that the concept of 'symbol' and corresponding 'Objective Content' is almost an endemic facet of The Western Philisophical Paradigm. Anyway, the aforementioned 'writing exercise' can really 'hammer home' the notion that we voluntarily live in a reality of 'signs and symbols' NOT out of necessity, but rather because the True Object Content that comprises the 'Objective Manifold' so to speak, is so unbelievably dull, inert, sterile and frankly downright depressing that whether people are conscious of this or not, the vast majority of us choose to 'embrace' the inherent 'absurdity' of life and live a life dominated by 'signs', 'symbols' and such rather than venturing down the proverbial rabbit hole towards 'Objective Truth', because the 'Objective Content is shit' compared to the vast wonderous Ontological symphony of 'signs', 'symbols, 'icons' and 'Societal Structures' that are ironically far more compelling and enjoyable than the 'Objective Content' that they reference. So... The 'development of an identity or conception of self' or whatever you choose to refer to the practice as is just another meaningless, totally superficial 'ritual' that we engage in from time to time because... it's something to do, and it keeps us from having to acknowledgement the horrid bleakness of 'Objective Metaphysical Truth'. Like the legendary Jean Paul Sartre famously asserted 'Existence Preceeds Essence'. Our 'identity' or 'self' is whatever the hell we say it is. There's no 'essence' to be found. So... Lastly, what would The so called 'Father if Existentialism' Soreen Kierkegaard say in regards to my 'Existentialist Position'? Well... I would imagine he would say something about living a life of 'Aesthetic Pleasure' being patently juvenile relative to accepting Objective Truth on it's own terms and devoting your life to ethics rather than aesthetics. To that I would 'tip my hat' to Mr. Keirkegaard and say, 'Touche! I must concede that my Ontological position is a bit juvenile. Not nearly as juvenile however as being a grown Man who who's primary concern is pleasing his imaginary Sky Daddy! Kick rocks, Keirky'! And at that precise moment, a 'Pimped Out' Lamborghini with Albert Camus behind the wheel and Jean Paul Sartre and Simone DeBouvier getting freaky in the back seat comes speeding towards me and screeches to a halt a few inches from me. I immediately jump in the passenger seat and we speed off. Where are we headed? Don't know... Don't care... All I do know for certain is things are about to get real f*cking 'Absurd' and you know what? I wouldn't have it any other way.

I read quite a bit, but On The The Freedom of Will by Schopenhauer, Concept of Anxiety by Kierkegaard, Zizek’s phenomenology on love and identity are a few works that helped inspire the idea for this video. I also lead a discussion on identity at the philosophy club at my university and that helped with thinking more on the concept
