With regards to being kind against being right. I see this differently: We are like in a storm situation on the open sea in a small boat. Building a bigger boat is nice, but letting someone in who will drill a hole in your boat is a lethal mistake. And if you see & hear someone spouting nonsense, what guarantee do you have that they are not gonna hull your boat?

I am mathematician. I have done some research. After federal taxes , SS and Medicare taxes, state taxes, sales taxes, car registration taxes, car insurance, home insurance, property taxes....I determined that the average American is left with a little less that 32 pennies for every dollars earned. The 32 pennies will have to pay for Internet, gas, food , meds and clothes. So at the end of the month, there is nothing left. That , ladies and gentlemen, is for a $55 k salary per year. Unbelievable. Our kids cannot afford rent. This is a very sad state of affairs. My kids buy their clothes from a good will store. This is a sad state of affairs for the richest country on planet earth

Goodwill....good example of end stage capitalism. A multi-billion corporation that gets free goods, and then sells those goods back to us at a somewhat discount. Yet nobody bats an eye at that business model amd continues to support them. We all need to sell our own stuff. We all need to fight for higher wages. We all need to fight for unions and stop electing officials who dismantle unions.

And people brag about how the US has less taxes than other countries. They fail to realize that other countries actually have some social programs. I’ve been saying that since I filed my first income tax form the same week I visited relatives in Canada in the early 80s. All the Americans at the table were bragging. Not so much these days, although old habits die hard.

@@kellytostada9949 It seems to me and apparently a lot of more expert observers that we are entering the intelligent and able machine era. It is very doubtful that unions are coming back because our labor likely is going to be less and less valuable - approaching zero. Machines are even going to be more effective artists, prostitutes, caregivers, CEOs, criminals, scientists - everything. Unions will have nothing to bargain with - machines will be better at violence too, so you can forget that as a bargaining chip.

Yep, especially in the UK - Purebred British like my partner and I have to fight for every penny we can get, and it's hopeless; I'm disabled with 2500+ pages of medical evidence and yet PIP is still making me take them to tribunal. Universal Credit deduces some of my partner's wages from my limited capable for work allowance. Meanwhile, Mohammed and his six wives are given every penny that we don't get because they're foreign and are struggling more. And then people wonder how this country got so "racist" and "hateful" - How could we not? We have veterans living on the streets while Middle-Easterns know they can come to this country and scrounge every penny.

We saw greedy landlords in Idaho raise rent by over 50% when everyone started buying up our real estate out here. Their excuse was that the "value" of their property was higher so they could. charge more. In other words, it was greed. Their mortgage payments hadn't increased...so when we blame everything on the system sometimes that's not exactly correct. my son and his wife live with my wife and I , with the cost of living going up more and more it takes a group to work together to make it through the life we have today. My wife and sons wife do the garden set up and we all help with the canning and processing of the wild game that we all hunt, planting berry plants and fruit trees together as a family makes us more cohesive as a family and partners in the life we live. I will agree when I finished High school I joined the military and spent 4 years learning a skill set and a work ethic that has carried over to my job now , I passed on the work ethic to my son and the Boy scouts helped cement the do your best everyday attitude . my son made Eagle Scout 2019 and it was one of the greatest days of my life and I see the man that he has become today. My family decided 2 decades ago that Mothers Day is a family brunch at home. My kids were little then and was hard enough to get them to behave at church, let alone brunch out in a crowded restaurant. So, Mother’s Day was spent at home. The littles are in their own environment (less stress) and the adults aren’t rushed. Some years we’ve brought food in, but even now, spending $$$ for a quiche that I can make for pennies makes no sense. So, we just set out the fine china, make a few simple dishes and pop a bottle of Cooks champagne and celebrate with cards and small gifts (like soaps!). It’s easy, peasy, quiet, and when we’re done, everyone goes down for a Sunday nap. PERFECT.

We STILL live WAY below our means, and our household income is 130k. Back in 2017, we started following Dave Ramsey’s advice. It was still hard for us living even MORE below our means, but in the end it was sooooooo worth it. Prices are super crazy right now. So are taxes and fees. Ridiculous. But I've found most people are living beyond their means which is making it harder to "make it" these days. Here are some things we've learned along the way to stay out of debt - Be a producer - not a consumer. Focus on non-monentary income. What items can you make instead of buy? Especially food. Make your own food as often as you can. It doesn't have to be fancy or complicated. Do you really need a $600 phone? Small expenses add up! Drop non-essential monthly payments - online music, games, movies,.. Amazon prime is a rip off! You can still get free shipping without it. Speaking of Amazon, leave stuff in your cart for a week before you buy it. A lot of times you'll find you don't really need it. Stop making car payments! Buy a cheap used car. Use cash not cards. Stop buying coffee drinks - they are mostly milk and cheap syrup. Same with alcohol. Make your own drinks at home! SO much cheaper! Shop thrift stores and garage sales for clothes.

Speaking from personal experience, I evaluated every penny I was spending and found I was the problem. I made enough money I just wasn't allocating properly. My suggestion is to take a painful look at your spending, a real, very, painful look and see if there's anything you can do to lower your expenses. I got a receipt for everything, I started growing my own food, I got a smart thermostat and wore a sweatshirt and sweatpants in the winter so I could keep the temperature at 68 instead of 70. I walk when I'm able instead of driving. The hardest part was acknowledging what I can't change. I can't change the price of an item, but I can choose how and when I spend my money. I hope this is helpful.

I’m a single mom who works from home, homeschools my autistic daughter, and BARELY makes ends meet. And sometimes not in the same month. 😂 I’m grateful for the warmer months just so we can have our gardens back. My daughter is also returning to school so I can work more and her lunch is prepared by the school. It’s wild! And I consider myself extremely lucky because I still have a roof over my head, food in the pantry, and friends/family nearby. For many, life is much harder than mine. If it weren’t for your channel and the learning/prepping I’ve done over the years, my anxiety would be much more severe than it already is!

I've been a gardener for over 40 years. I was an urban police officer, who on a particular day responded on a call for help from another police officer and when I and other officers arrived, that officer had been killed. Fast forward - gardening offered a place of solitude (a sanctuary) and peace and food to put on the table. That solitude offers you a place to work things out in your head and heart. Today, I encourage everyone I speak with to grow something. I usually start with giving them a package of radish seeds. Anyone can grow radishes. Once they realize they can grow vegetables, then I help them plan, prepare and plant their next year's garden. They are always grateful to have been introduced to their very own special place. MY GARDEN. Start now, ask a gardener. They will be more than willing to help you learn so that they will be able to teach someone else. Keep on prepping!

I’ve been saying it for years now: You have to follow the 3 L’s- Learn to live with less. I just buy the basics when it comes to food. I’ve cancelled all my subscriptions, except internet, I don’t drive anywhere unless I absolutely have to and I combine all trips into one. I also work as many hours as I can and save that extra money. It’s only going to get worse, a whole lot worse, so now is the time to prepare. Actually yesterday was the time but that time has passed.

If Americans could learn to sacrifice a little bit of privacy and space, we can do as other cultures that have several generations under one roof. Everyone contributes to the household. The grandparents watch the kids to save on daycare and sometimes cook the meals. The parents and older children work to share financial responsibilities.

The best advice I ever received was to ask myself three questions before purchasing ANYthing... Do I really want it? Do I really need it? Can I really aford it (Do I have the money in my pocket to pay for it)? These questions have kept us debt free, having a good life by social standards and not worrying about our future. Do not live your life to please others. Do good for yourself and yours so as not to fall a victim of today's dead society.

@@mrnice4434Oh, one of my sisters is a true example of that. She lives in a great city in the US, has made lots of money and still owns nothing. The system owns her. She did not set her priorities with a future vision. I live in a third world country were everybody wants to go for vacation, but even since I was little I never cared a pickle about other people's standards. My grandparents were patient teachers of living a sensible and frugal life, enjoying the fruits of your labor wisely. Have I splurged sometimes? Sure have. It was my splurge money. Other times I save and save until I can get what I want from my "needs" money. The problem is that that people have a distorted view of happiness. Real happiness comes from within, and that means sometimes you can do without and it's ok.

Prepping on a budget sounds great. I'm not in the USA. Rent's going up here at a rate of 15-20%, but wages aren't. One rental unit made the news for having over 1000 replies of interest in under 24 hours. It's really easy to be discouraged, when rents are easily taking up over 50% of a decent wage and those rents are climbing really fast.

That is very disheartening indeed. It’s hard to understand a person who chooses to be a social worker lacks compassion for people who so desperately need help! That social worker may have started her career with the best intentions but after years of seeing & dealing with so much physical & emotional chaos, even the strongest case workers become hardened & jaded. Add ing to the depression is the fact that they are being paid the lowest salaries of any degree required career. It’s awful but sadly that’s no excuse to treat people so badly.

If you have a good troop, it's because the adult leadership is choosing to operate like it's 20 years ago. I agree that it is really important to get your community working together - it's hard to do before it's really obvious that it is necessary... people just tend to keep to themselves and move around so that they don't become naturally rooted in a community.

I have a well stocked pantry, i cook pretty much everything from scratch, make sauces and freeze them etc. If i find beef/chicken reduced i buy a lot and vacuum seal which is brilliant. We dont have coupons here unfortunately, well not like out there!! I also bake - brown bread, white bread and even though its absolutely devoured its nothing compared to our delicious white bread we can get here!! I also bake cinnamon rolls, buns/muffins, tray bakes, cookies (make them up, freeze them and pull out and bake, all these baked goods are treats and most certainly not a daily option 😅 food has dramatically risen in price here so has fuel etc. I dont do a weekly shop really, just pick up fresh veg, milk etc because I'm so well stocked. A friend recently told me she spends over around €300 per week on 2 adults and 2 small children and thats no meat!

Spot on, you are indeed a realist, and you said many things that are glaringly obvious to be the right thing to do, such as learning how to grow your own food, and very important, how to interact with one's own, immediate community. The icing on the cake was your take on learning how to be kind, instead of right all the time. I myself am of the Baby Boomer generation, where, like you said, kindness was a virtue, and community was always important. When I was growing up, if we didn't know all our neighbors, someone we knew would know about him/her...and not in a mean and disparaging way...and our "neighbors" lived in a mile wide radius from our house, which meant that all your neighbors didn't necessarily live withing line of sight of you. Each year I continue to expand my backyard garden, and what I haven't personally consumed or given away, I've canned and dehydrated. Great podcast, can't wait for the next.
