Anybody else notice how often Northrop came up? Those guys are consistently cutting-edge, and sometimes even ahead-of-their-time: The areas where the YF-23 surpassed the YF-22 are areas where 6th Gen fighters will improve on 5th Gen capabilities.
@F15ElectricEagleАй бұрын
Your remark about how truly innovative and way ahead of its time Northrop Grumman reminded me of a joke about why the YF-23 lost to the YF-22 in the ATF program. The ATF program was looking for a 5th Gen fighter. Lockheed Martin won because it brought in a 5th Gen fighter. Northrop Grumman lost because it brought in a 6th Gen fighter. What is even funnier is decades later, the military aviation industry is developing the 6th Gen fighter. If you do a search the internet for 6th Gen fighter, many of the designs and conceptual arts and image of the 6th Gen fighter is based on or take many traits of the YF-23.

@F15ElectricEagle25 күн бұрын
What is sad is Northrop Grumman is starting to deemphasis the military aviation R&D and manufacturing sector of its business in favor of concentrating more on products related to space technology, satellites, navigational system, advance composite materials, and A.I. systems. In fact the B-21 might be the last manned military aircraft NG developed and builds. NG got so screwed over by the U.S. Government with the F-20 and YF-23 that NG's senior executive management believes manned military combat aircraft as a product is just too high risk for the company to develop and produce going forward. Hence, NG didn't even seriously bid in the NGAD fighter competition.

Supersonic jet inlet design is a very thorny problem. The air has to be "slowed down" before the jet can use it - which essentially means, relative to the ground, speeding it up until it's travelling at the same supersonic speed as the aircraft. This has to be done in a few feet and a fraction of a second. Apparently MOST of the wind tunnel work on the supersonic airliner Concorde was devoted to getting the inlets right.

Also when talking or switching topics about mechanisms or aircrafts

The American and British aerospace industry freely shared information on new techniques which then fell into the hands of Russian designers. Thus the "break throughs " attributed to the Russians were actually "borrowed" from the western industries. The forward wing style of the Russian Y-23 was five years after NASA had already flown their forward wing jet. The Tiger Shark went into production as the Talon trainer and is still in use today. A french engineer is suspected of selling design plans of the Concord to the Russians. While the Democracies encourage independent thinking the Russian and Chines require political ideological loyalty first over all else. Western companies compete with each other to come up with great designs!

It had BVR capability along with good dogfighting Good stream line of logistics as most the parts were off the shelf components and maintenance as easy, even compared to the F-16. Insane scramble time (10 minutes) with the only modern fighter matching that kind of readiness being the JAS-39 SAAB Gripen. High agility for a lightweight fighter, with its airframe, it can go above the capabilities of a 9g strain (the aircraft mind you). The only major downsides of this bird was it not having enough hardpoints for heavier weapon loads, and politics (specifically those revolved in texas)...The more I read about entrenched military thinking (POTUS) and those involved, the more i realize some of these guys look for political interest and not national interest. 1:06:17 you almost had a great synopsis of the Yak-141 then you had to go and perpetuate the same bullshit myth that is spread far enough around the internet. The 3 Bearing Swivel Nozzle was a design patented by Pratt and Whitney both in 1969 then in 1990 the 3BSM,intended for the F-35’s lift fan was also patented again. The Yak-141 did not influence the west, rather the opposite. The first 3BSM design was to be used for the Convair 200 which never materialized, but in 1992 with the JSF the same 3BSM Pratt and Whitney already created in 1967 was resurrected for the F-35B. When Lockheed Martin and Yakovlev collaborated, the exchange was flight testing data. It basically told Lockheed that the concept was feasible and would save them 5 years trying to create a proof-of-concept to understand how it works. They had the data so they could immediately go to prototyping their 3BSM, which was a lot more mechanically complex than the Yakovlev design. So no, that’s a stupid myth, the Yak-141 had zero impact on the F-35 design, given its STOVL system existed since 1967. The only change is the F-35 would’ve spent more time in the prototype stage gathering testing data for the lift system.

The Air Force picked Lockheed's Yf-22 over Northrop's YF-23 because Air Force officials were unhappy with Northrop's delays and cost overruns on the B-2 Bomber program and they _rightfully_ did not believe that Northrop could deliver on time and on budget. The YF-23 might have been the better fighter, but Lockheed could actually deliver their YF-22 and a fighter in the air is always better than one on backorder.

@JackNiles-hc8yz Its was the 1st fly by wire it was the fastest it had all of its weapons inside service ceiling was 68.000 feet and first in so many ways. Guess you don't read. The men from the project went on to manage skunk works NASA Boing Bristol and the concord project, we put the man on the moon

@JackNiles-hc8yz They had it at Mach 1,98 without the Orunda engine that produced 10.000 lbs more thrust each. The clime rate is still classified. Just read the books about it. The US was petrified of it and where the industry would take it, especially when they planned on selling their products

And I'm not talking about the use of hydraulics I'm talking fly by wire. It could take off fly to it's target and launch its missiles and return without the pilots directions

@@crushthis123 1. The German He-111 had the first electrically servo-operated FBW system in 1941. 2. The top speed achieved by the Arrow prototype in level flight was M1.9. 3. There would be no need to classify the climb rate of a cancelled prototype after 60 years. Get real. 4. The U.S. had interceptors in either the concept or design stage that were superior to the Arrow. They were cancelled. The equivalent F-106 was in production. The superior F-4 Phantom was being flight tested. So much for "petrified". 5. The avionics and flight control systems you allude to were never installed or tested.

The form factor and edges on the YF23 offering a least overall SCR in over all 3D angles, however SCR of F22 is a just bit lower is limited at a narrow frontal angle. It’s pilot was told to steered head on at enemy fighter to avoid being locked on. That is why enemies air and ground radars can pick up F22 from all other angles. In combat F22 has head on first strike advantage due to low SCR but is vulnerable from the side or behind. This isn’t a secret any more. F22’s superior SCR is only advantageous with shorter and shorter wavelengths is however very vulnerable when enemy use a much longer wavelength detection signal. Detection under long wavelengths equipments F22 is just another fighter jet.
