Im happy for the sudden surge of video essays about SH 4,it goes to show that despite its many flaws it holds up really well. I wish it gets a remake in the future that entirely overhauls its biggest flaws,starting for the second half,they could just take those parts and add them to the first half,so when we get to the hospital we descend straight throught the spiral road all the way to the room 302,get the weird cutscene,go back to the real world,open the wall to get the keys of liberation to get the umbilical cord and then go back to stop walter,this means we dont go twice through all areas,but once,and we dont have to scort Eileen for the entirety of it,just through the small hospital section and the spiral path straight to room 302.

I don't disagree that amongst the Team Silent entries, this is the weakest one. Despite it's flaws though, I really like SH4, it tackles some interesting subject matter, the room itself is a real highlight and feels like an untapped idea for future horror games to mine from. The flaws do hold it back, but I agree that they've been overstated, the backtracking and escorting of Eileen really isn't that bad, it's not great but it could've been way worse. It's a flawed but interesting title that does some cool stuff.

I like it alot because it gives fans a lot to chew on lore wise and also solidifies the aspect of dreams being key in the function of silent hill. It shows that the nature of silent hills power involves the subconscious dreams of people who go their and the more heightened their emotional states are the more potent their dreams bleed onto reality. It's supremely interesting and it also goes to show how teranickle the cult is by trapping its enemies in dreams and it also further elaborates on the way the cult increases its influence which also builds off of three which explores the interpersonal relationship between cult members. I love the ascetics of silent hill and it's supreme depiction of the esoteric and old American culture.

I'm happy that SH4 gets so much love and recognition lately (even tho this is more of a diss). Despite the jank and Henry being complete autist, SH4 is my favorite game in the series. What I like the most, is that they tried to change the formula. SH1 - 3 may have a different stories, albeit interconnected, but they are more or less the same gameplay wise. SH4 was different and not bad at all. I get the critique, especially when it's flat out in an hour long vid. It's better than common "iT's nOt A sIlEnT hIll gAmE oKaY, iT's nhaaaaat!" And also, I kind of wish for a secret ending, where If you preserved all the golf clubs, you could have a mini-golf date with Eileen.

Silent Hill 4 is such a strange game for me. It was the first Silent Hill game I played, though definitely not my first video game. I had already played horror classics like Resident Evil 1 and Clock Tower, so this wasn’t my introduction to horror games. I can see why people dislike it, but despite its flaws and shortcomings, SH4 offered a truly unique experience. Yes, the water prison might just be a series of identical, copy-paste floors, but to me, it remains one of the most unsettling locations in the entire series. This really applies to the whole game. The atmosphere is so well-crafted that I can overlook its many flaws.

Heck, it was my very first horror game I ever played. Secondly: Just because something is not covered in darkness does not mean it's not scary and I'd argue this game has some moments and with it's atmosphere, that still creep me out to this day.

Eileen is a better escort mission than Ashley. Both were the fourth 'mainline numbered' game in their series that both went for a complete different direction of their series, but whilst Capcom had their 'main object' thrown away from the player where the player doesn't really escort much of Ashley (only around for maybe at most 20% of the game, and even when she returns in Leon's clutches she quickly is taken away to leave Leon alone). Ashley as a whole is just a liability that doesn't 'add' any actual assets to the player other than acting as an extra challenge for a variety of circumstances, being at risk of being kidnapped or killed (and more than likely killed by the Shield-Wielding Not-Spanish Not Zombies)... Eileen actually has benefits Eileen, on one hand, is immortal, and for her health being lost it can both be somewhat temporarily be increased with the use of a candle or can be regenerated VIA going through rooms and her not taking damage (until Building World IIRC). Eileen, on the other hand, also hits like a brick; give her a Chain and have her help kill the enemies, she will make anything, even the Zombies into nothing. Considering I think unlike Henry who takes damage VIA being near ghosts that Eileen seems to take no damage (or if she does, it really added nothing to her back/body whenever I used her to help bring down Jasper/Cynthia), she is a great way of taking down that obviously tedious and obviously constantly running, cowardly ghosts that don't want to get a new belly button from my Anti-Ghost Swords. I would rather have Eileen in my team over Ashley any day.

I totally get your gripes with Walter appearing and being immortal but it is his world or his dream so you can't fault team silent making him invincible. The whole ritual is about him killing people as a part of the ritual and placing their souls in his endless dream. The motifs of him desiring to reunite with his mother and thus nihilistically living in his dreams to achieve that are S tier my only real gripe is the execution but it's Konami what could we say? Even by 2004 Konami was already in sharp decline. Kojima was the only thing keeping them afloat most of the Castlevania games by that time sucked and I can't even remember any of their other ips really making a dent I can only dream of a world where kanami properly funded and nurtured team silent the kind of quality story telling and content we could have gotten. Konami forced all of their best developers away and it's a loss not only to gamers but art as a whole

The weirdest part of the Room 302 Storage Space that Room 302 shares that wall with 301. It shouldn't exist. No other room has that storage space, and there LITERALLY isn't enough room between 301 and 302 for either of them to have that storage space. I think Walter used "Hole Technology" to just link some random storage space to 302 and sealed up the hole like the one in 302's bathroom. That technically fulfills the requirements of the rite and explains how he was able to be there without there being a physical space for it.

Protip: All the PC ports of the original Silent Hill games are somewhat scuffed. Usually in the graphical effects department. Always look for mods to restore console features before trying to play them. Although be careful that some fix-packs will also include mods that do other changes to the game. Looking at you Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition, with your changing the quotation-punctuation style for no reason, flat-out removing lines that had errors in them (and not even looking up what they were meant to be in the Japanese version), editing the textures to add things like a cord to the fridge in the fridge puzzle, and zooming in on the video-tape cut-scene to make it widescreen thus cutting out big chunks of the picture, despite that cut-scene being the only one in the original not in wide-screen format specifically and intentionally because it was meant to be a VHS tape playing on a 4:3 TV, etc.

Ackshually 🤓 there was also a Java mobile phone first person Silent Hill game that came before SH4 in Japan. This was more of a point-and-click game similar to Myst. It was later exported to the west some years after as Silent Hill: Orphan.

Few things confused me about the Silent Hill plots more than the problem of Walter Sullivan's body in Room 302. The game wants to imply that Walter was a ghost when he performed the Ritual of the Holy Assumption in Room 302 due to the writings from the neighbor's journal in South Ashfield Heights of their dreams. However, Joseph's hypothesis that an imposter/patsy was the one to die in the prison muddles this interpretation, especially with the dates. (Room 302 being unoccupied by a tenant at the time of Walter's suicide as noted in the superintendent's diary.) Did Walter use Room 302 as a base of operations while committing the Walter Sullivan Case - Round 1 (aka the Ten Hearts Killings) and begin performing the Ritual of the Holy Assumption in the back storeroom of Room 302 before being apprehended, finishing it in his jail cell after being arrested? Or is it the situation that he died in the prison cell by suicide after which his ghost somehow mysteriously appeared and exhumed his body, carried it to South Ashfield Heights and relocated it in the back storeroom? Or, alternatively, was there actually a body double who was falsely arrested and died in the prison cell while Walter performed the Ritual of the Holy Assumption on himself in Room 302 in the interim? Or alternatively, alternatively, is the state of affairs in the back storeroom of Room 302 in the dream world just that - a dream state? A memory of what the Room looked like (or at least what Walter felt it looked like) when Walter was occupying it? Or perhaps there's an assumption that I've made that needlessly obfuscates the issue entirely? I've assumed that "the Ritual of the Holy Assumption grant[ing] the power of heaven" meant that it changed Walter from an ordinary human into a supernatural entity, and subsequently that a side effect of the ritual caused Walter's subconscious to inadvertently spawn the dream worlds "outside of the Lord's world, yet within the Lord's world" as a result. However, if Walter was already imbued with an Otherworldly power to have his soul/ghost manifest after death corporeally, and that the Ritual of the Holy Assumption's effects are to create the dream worlds, not be a byproduct of it, then a few things clear up. [If the Victim Files are to be considered canonical, then we know two things: a) Vatiel is present within Walter prior to the beginning of the killings {Vatiel having the power to resurrect people after their death}, and b) Walter was in Silent Hill, specifically Wish House, the center of the cult's religion, at the time of the first murder, a place of power within the lore with "the power to defy even death."] Therefore, 1) No body double/impersonator exists - Walter died in a jail cell in Silent Hill by suicide (subsequently resurrected in ghost form by Vatiel afterward); 2) Walter's ghost did exhume Walter's body from the graveyard in Silent Hill (transported his body to the back storeroom of Room 302 via supernatural means, marked the coffin 11/21, and hung the body up on the makeshift crucifix in the storeroom); 3) Having the ceremonial items needed to complete the Ritual of the Holy Assumption, Walter's ghost created the dream worlds, particularly the dream Room 302 and hid his body in the dream world, which is why Joseph never found it (either at the gravesite nor within his own room)! Joseph does say that the Ritual of the Holy Assumption did split his soul apart as a consequence, which could have strange lore implications.

Man that stolen copy story was great! tbh, when I first purchased Silent hill 3 around 2004 it was a used copy from EB Games (Back when they partnered with Gamestop) They accidently put the soundtrack as the game disc. When my mom took me back to get the correct disc, the clerk let me keep the soundtrack plus the game. From then on my music taste mega evolved from the magic that is Akira Yamaoka! Great memories that had an effect on me to this day!

I didn't get much of a chance to play it because I let the intro play, and my mom walked in right as Henry was beating one of those dogs to death with a pipe. She promptly forbid me from playing the series for years. However, one day when my ma left for work, my dad found where she hid the copy and let me play it for a bit. I don't think I even learned how to get out of the first room (y'know, being six or seven and all). To be fair to my ma, though, she did take me to see the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie in theaters a few years later. She hated every moment of it, but she endured it. Hats off to ma.

I have to disagree about the water prison level, I think the atmosphere is great and really creepy, even without darkness. Especially when you're walking on the corridors and the walls obstruct half of your screen, and you just know that the twin victims are waiting there. It just feels otherworldly.

I have only ever played a demo of this game. I remember enjoying it because it was less creepy and seemed to be more action-oriented than Silent Hill 2 was. At least that was my impression based on the demo.
