Something To Wrestle With Bruce Prichard

Something To Wrestle With Bruce Prichard

On this episode: The Summer of 1993 might be one of the most interesting times in the history of the WWF. With the Federal investigation looming, Vince McMahon steps down as President of Titan Sports after 12 years in the role, Tom Cole's story and the "ring boy scandal" continues to twist in the media, Hulk Hogan is working with NJPW but he's the WWF Champion and he wants to leave to do TV full time, Bret Hart feels like his opportunity to be the top guy was taken from him by a "half-in" Hogan, Yokozuna is the monster heel Vince loves, and somebody needs him at SummerSlam. But wasn't Hart-Hogan the plan at SummerSlam? What subtle hints were dropped on this broadcast and what "out" did Vince leave himself with the booking? Of course Bruce discusses the incredible performance by Bret Hart, a rusty Mr. Perfect who doesn't look rusty at all, a hot angle with Lawler to finish the show. the silly photographer outfit, and the weird transitional period within the company where stars from the "golden era" like Hacksaw Duggan are still in the company when guys like Razor, Diesel, and Shawn are coming into their own. And oh yeah, the guys discuss that "European tour" that got them into the worst fight in show history back on the WrestleMania IX episode.
Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard is an audio podcast that discusses topics, events, wrestlers and memorable moments through the lens of former WWE executive Bruce Prichard co-hosted by Conrad Thompson.
The show was launched in August 2016 on MLW Radio. The episodes typically range from 2 hours to 4 hours in length, and include discussions about previous WWE pay-per-views and former WWE wrestlers.

Mr.Perfect vs Doink qualifier was the first WWF match I ever saw. I instantly became a fan of Mr.Perfect. Unfortunately, he quit soon thereafter. During this run, he was booked to lose often. To Lex at WM IX, to Bret at King of the Wrong, to Yokozuna in October and Shawn Michaels at Summerslam. A sad way for a great like him to depart, in 1993.

Goddammit, folks, anything you can do for Matt Cappotelli is a positive shot for mankind. I don't have shit and I gave a couple of bucks. No matter how tough you have it, things could get much worse. Matt's a fighter and always has been. STW has always been about the community, and we have a real chance here to make a difference in someone's life whom a lot of us have a real shared moment with. Give'er hell, Matt! Never stop fighting!

M Perkins yes, unfortunately. I read on his Wikipedia that his wife announced that Matt's wishes are to no longer take medication to attempt to intervene with his tumor. Poor guy and his family. He seemed like such a nice kid on tough enough. I'd say throw them a few bucks if you can spare. It could come in handy to his family since it is one less bread earner in their household. Godspeed, Matt.

I love Heenan’s line in the opener. JR mentions the Harts having 12 or 13 kids and Bobby says “Yep, they had one of each.” F’n classic. And for those arguing this - hands down, The best KOTR ever is 94, with 93 in 2nd place. The abortion that was ‘95 killed any future the concept had.

What an opportunity this would have been to turn Hogan heel in 93 to set up a Summerslam match with Hart. It didn't have to be babyface vs babyface. The fans would have bought it, I would have. Hogan could have gotten heat by letting what was going on backstage become the storyline refusing to defend the title against Bret, saying he knew he couldn't beat Yokozuna at Wrestlemania 9 and that Bret wasn't on his level.

I believe it was Dave Meltzer who originally reported it, and you gotta love Hulk Hogan because of course he lied and said “oh I never said that, Meltzer made it up”, however Hogan was recorded saying it and Dave had the tape 😂 but to be fair to Hulk, I don’t think he was necessarily burying the WWF Championship, he was trying to put over the promotion he was working for at the time which was NJPW, who were paying him more money than Vince was at the time.

I know all these Podcasters want to pretend in hindsight that lawler in the wwf was a big deal. But as a teen watching this , lawler was a hairy out of shape shop teacher that only punched and did an occasional… wait what other move did he have? It was totally unbelievable. Most people I know that grew up in that era that were wwf fans had the same feeling .

This was the event that was the proverbial "Finger Poke Of Doom" but for the WWF. Hogan's decision not to work with and put over Bret Hart at "Summerslam" in 1993 lead to a catastrophic series of events for the WWF which opened the door for WCW to successfully challenge them to become for a time the dominant domestic wrestling promotion. For it was the this event that saw Hogan put over an uncharismatic, barely communicative, adequate worker (for his size) box office bust instead of doing what would've been best for the WWF at the time which would've been to put over the talent in the promotion (Hart) who had the best chance of succeeding him as a respectable if not downright successful draw. Instead by dropping the belt to Yokozuna, it eventually caused the promotion to pivot to Lex Luger who was placed in the unenviable slot of having to be a poor man's Hulk Hogan where he feuded with the aforementioned bust of a champion Yokozuna for the better part of a year, a rivalry which failed to capture audiences on any level to the point where by WMX, Vince McMahon realized his mistake and put the belt on Bret Hart but by then it was too late. While it's true that the steroid controversy damaged WWF from a public relations standpoint, the in-ring product nosedived on June 13, 1993. For what it's worth, I was on the Intrepid on July 4, 1993 and although WWF successfully drowned it out on their broadcasts of that event, the crowd was chanting "Hogan, Hogan!" the entire day which should've been the first salvo fired in terms of a predictor as to how well the Luger-Yokozuna feud was going to draw going forward. The 1993 King Of The Ring, was the "Jump The Shark" moment that began the nosedive that took half a decade for the WWF to recover from!

jldraw A lot of people have cited 1995 as the weakest year for the company in terms of ratings, live gate, and the overall financial state. I can't speak for the actual #'s of course, but what '95 DOESN'T get mentioned for is how it was an establishment period. It was the year that Shawn started off as the hottest heel in the company and ended it as the top babyface. It was also the year a guy named Steve Austin made his tv debut.... You point out some really interesting things, here. Such as how on more than one occasion, Bret Hart was either directly or indirectly, but also inadvertently the catalyst for the shift of power and momentum between the two companies. Once here, and once in 1997. The year of 1993 was one of the most dreary in terms of content.
@jldraw
@jldraw 6 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more. Whereas strictly based upon content alone, 1995 could be looked upon as the nadir for WWF professional wrestling, 1993 was arguably the weakest year for professional wrestling all around in regards to the modern era. Also as you noted 1995 was in some ways a foundation year in which the bedrock was laid for the WWF's turnaround, even if the results would not be evident for another year and a half. Shawn Michaels by the end of 1994, was clearly ready to take that next step as a performer where he could've put the promotion on his shoulders as either a heel or babyface World Champion. This makes it's all the more puzzling as to why the promotion went with Kevin Nash for much of 1995 as the face of their "New Generation" campaign. I have no issue whatsoever with Nash's 1995 run, but do agree with Bret Hart's assertion that the belt was given to Nash as a way to counteract the arrival of Hulk Hogan in WCW, as according to Hart, WWF wanted to have the belt around the waist of a big man of their own in order to combat WCW's signing of Hogan. As far as 1997 goes, that's another chapter and verse in enough of itself which found guys like Bret and Owen Hart on the wrong side of the fence in terms of progressive thinking regarding how wrestling was being booked in the WWF. Long story short, Bret and Owen and for a long time Vince McMahon, took that standpoint of "stay the course/slow and steady wins the race" whereas Shawn, Triple H and even Mick Foley were pushing McMahon basically to drive the company off a cliff with what would become "The Attitude Era", a risky marketing strategy but one that obviously paid off.

i'm not sure if Bruce or Conrad read this, regardless, maybe someone influential to this podcast will... for a long time I've been watching a podcast, it doesn't really have a name, its just a small podcast with Matt Morgan as a guest/host or whatever. My point is, that I'd love it if Bruce and Conrad would consider doing an episode on Matt Morgan. Bruce was with him in TNA and WWE and certainly would have plenty to talk about. He may not be a legend of the industry, and there definitely inst going to be a lot of fans clamoring for this, but the truth is that Matt has one of the most interesting stories in wrestling, with his terrible stuttering gimmick, to how he decided to leave the industry. Matt also has a really interesting story after he left the industry, as he made his own company and got elected to an office in his Florida town. The reason i suggest this, is perhaps kind of selfish, as I wasn't really watching wrestling when Matt was kicking around, and I really want to hear the full story, good and bad from Bruce. Please at least consider this topic for the future, whether its next month or next year. Thanks for reading if this gets looked at. -Adam Frye

I remember seeing this live on ppv back in June 1993 my favorite part of this is when the cameraman shot a fireball in Hulk Hogan’s face and after that he lost the title to yokozuna and we didn’t see his bitch ass in the WWF until 2002

Ok so I finished watching the wwecw wwe network show and thinking the whole time that it was CMPunk that was the “controversy “ that Conrad was talking about BUT then they showed punk and talked about him.....but then figured out what it was watching them talk about the Johnny nitro cmpunk match.....Nitro was the replacement for Benoit...so there ya go. No Chris Benoit talk on the network.

The correct finish was that Bret beats Yoko at WM. After the match, Fuji blinds Bret with the salt. Yoko and Fuji begin beating down on Bret after the match and Hogan runs in to make the save. Hogan then grabs the title belt, puts it around Bret's waist, holds Bret's arm up in the air in a victory pose, gets the crowd to pop for Bret, the two shake hands, and that's how WM ends. So Hogan puts Bret over without having a match with him. Bret's next big feud would be against heel Lex Luger and then ultimately Shawn who he would drop the title to.

@@weworldwide1348 Perhaps, but Bret was a better choice than Yoko any day. It didn't make any sense for a heel to win at WM. That should have been Bret's big win and his big moment to be put over as champion on PPV. Hogan should have left after WM and then the company should have gone Bret vs Luger.

Good grief... every Bret story involves him taking something the wrong way or him getting screwed. He knows this is all a work right? Sure he’s a great worker, sure he has a good amount of charisma, but Hogan was a terrible worker, and being the best worker there is was or will be doesn’t make you better than Hogan... Bret was a 10/10 worker, but understanding about being a baby face defeating unbeatable monsters directly =$$$$ 3/10. He’s basically Bob Holley who showed up at the perfect time and had no demons except worrying about his record in a business that’s scripted. Bret Hart matches, unbelievable, Bret Hart heat or crowd pop after the match was over, minimal except in Canada.
