cover the water tubing. laying out in the sun like that will turn those water hoses into heaters and when the water turns on, it will cook your plants.

Hi guys, just a little word of advice. You don't need much. Fertilizer on beans, beans are a Nitrogen fixer, which means they make their own nitrogen. So you probably added a little too much. That's why a lot of places will tell you to put them in the bed behind your tomatoes so they can replenish the nitrogen.

Same here. I would have kept the plants and stopped fertilizing. I have been gardening for a little over four decades. I make my own compost and use it to boost my plants as needed. My last home had sixty-two organic fruit trees, a ten thousand in ground organic garden, four or five 8' X 4' garden boxes, with herbs, grapes. I was always blessed and shared with family, friends, and people at church.

HELLO, HERE ARE SOME IDEAS If your beans are not growing there is something wrong in your soil. If their is any pesticide in your soil they will not grow correctly. Roots and refuge farm brought some bulk soil into the garden and it had pesticide in the dirt. They can tell you how to fix it. Some other plants grow but not correctly. So sorry you are having problems. Also add some bean and pea innoculate to your soil. Helps tremendously. Good luck and have fun gardening.

It was aminopyralid herbicide. The bad thing about them is that they can go through an animal and taint the manure. Once incorporated into the soil it can take up to three years to dissipate. Those beans dont look like typical aminopyralid tainted soil, but you never know what new evil chemical is being used/produced. I no longer use bagged manure/compost in my garden after last year. I had five sip containers left and ran out of my own compost. I bought some and it was tainted. The tomatoes were twisted and curled. Never again. Two years ago I started making leaf mold. This year it was ready and I didnt have to buy any compost.

My beans, cucumbers and zucchini did the exact same thing. I just kept watering them and ignored them then one day they just took off and started bearing like crazy. 🤷‍♀️ We also have found that our fall garden does far better than our spring/summer Garden. Don’t pull those plants up, leave them until the fall and they will take off. Especially your tomatoes, etc..

Take a soil sample to your local Cooperative Extension Service or grab a soil sample kit at your local TSC. Either will tell you what is going on with your soil. The CES can tell you what you need to do to correct the situation.

Not sure why in a raised bed you would be planting in rows. I would space the plants based on the seed package specification in a continuous pattern of all seeds the same distance from the others adjacent ones. Given the size of your planter you can support many more plants increasing yield.

Couple of thoughts. In addition to the heat (raised beds contain a lot of heat), lack of N2. Bagged soil is very low in nutrients but high in wood chips. The wood chips deplete the soil of what little N2 is there. We live in Tennessee just a bit west of you have removed all the raised beds from our garden. Too much heat; they don't hold water well but drain quickly; and the lack of nutrients in the bagged soil we put in them. We started with conventional tillage and had bountiful harvests but switched to raised beds and a bit of Hügelkultur because everyone said that's the way to go. After fighting with it for several years of poor harvests, I ripped that all out last year and went back to conventional tillage. So far things are looking better if I can just keep the dang rabbits out. They find a hole in my fencing and think the garden is the buffet at Golden Corral.

Last year Roots and Refuge Farm got some compost that was contaminated with herbicide. In their Jun 22, 2022 KZbin video they talk about it. The soil was particularly brutal to their nightshades and legumes. Green beans were so sensitive that going forward they used green beans to test new sources of compost. It looks like this may have happened to you too.

Good Morning Sam & Angela. My semi professional opinion is the bean were/are over fertilized. The 10-10-10 mixed in along with top side dressing is just too much, especially for tender young growth. The yellowish tint shown on my TV suggested this. You had good root growth/development but be very careful about how much you fertilize beans. Love your channel and your desire to grow your own food. Have a great week. Blessings from Michigan👍

I had to dig my plants up and rinse their roots in fresh water, then I planted them on soil from my woods and they recovered and are doing well. The bags of dirt that I bought were made with composted manure, and it appears that herbicides sprayed in hay pastures pass through the cow/horse that eats that hay and into the compost. My forest dirt is growing potatoes like crazy right now, and my bush beans have perked up and greened up and are looking great. I wish I could share before and after pics!

Sam…so I live here in San Diego and I live in the foot hills so its considered hi desert oak trees and sage brush. Our temps range from very rare snow that doesn’t stick for long to its been 116 in the shade. My garden will some times burn from the heat. What I have done with my boxes is I garden by the square inch not square foot! I know it sounds strange but I plant the plants that can handle full sun and like the heat in front of the ones that don’t and they shade them. By letting it kinda over grow I make mini echo systems the more plants they seem to keep the ground cooler and retain the moisture. I even noticed some plant grow really good in one box and if I move to another box the next year they may not! Just the few feet seems to make a difference in some of the plants not sure why. Lastly I learned soils may not be depleted, but bound up ! Especially if you use chemical fertilizers they bind the nutrients in the soil then become dependent on the chemical fertilizer like miracle grow for example. I use Ironite you sprinkle for your sized beds a large coffee can in each bed . The pellets will slowly dissolve as you water will not burn the plants and what it does is breaks those binds in the soil allowing the plants to absorb the nutrient’s in your soil. I wish I could post you a picture of how crazy my garden grows with this stuff! Good luck!

Sam & Angela, couple of points, and a little advice, it is possible to overfeed and overwater, thinking this is ok because it's a new bed, well it's not always the case, far better to give it a full year to let it build itself up and make a good quality bed, leaving it upto nature works too, so expect the first seasons crop to not always the the best, secondly where you are double planting those been seeds in two rows, they are big seeds so why not single plant but in four rows instead, there's plenty of space in those beds to do it, inter plant row spacing so that the bean seeds sown are not directly opposite each other, you are still planting the same amount of seeds but giving each seed it's own space to grow, in all My years of gardening one thing I have learnt to be true, you have to have patience when you start a new patch or bed.

Tractor supply carries a weed free straw but you'll pay a premium for it. Beans are so cheap at the store I don't bother growing them. The flavor doesn't change either from my experience. I focus my energy on veggies that taste better or just aren't available locally that I want to try. If your beans putter out again I'd get your soil tested to see if it's pesticide or herbicide related.

You might want to try, Blood and Bone meal. Amend to soil once every 2-3 weeks. Also add worms to your soil. Worm castings, Blood and Bone meal are organic. Fertilizing too much is as bad as not enough. Your plants root system can only absorb so much. I use only the three mentioned for all my plants. Tomato, squash, berries etc.. Also for berries, i.e. blueberries, raspberries and blackberries, which like sour or acidic soil, soured milk works wonders. The beans you pulled, dig a deep hole in the bed and bury them. They will feed the new plants. Now for onions and garlic, use pot ash. Both like sweet soil. You are learning and doing a good job.

I had a bed that had a little too much sand/rock in the soil mix. It was draining really well, much better than the others and my plants in there were struggling. Once I was able to pull some stuff, add some mushrooms compost and a couple of extra drip lines, it has now turned around and the plants in there are much better. Sometimes it is a fluke thing and you just regroup and replant. Good calll!

You know Sam and Angela I replanted my green beans 4 times last year. Mine would come up and then die. I was so frustrated I pulled them all out of the raised bed for the third time and took my seeds to the front yard and planted them in the ground next to my potato bed. I didn't have much space there and very few seeds left but I got enough green beans for a few meals nothing like I expected, jars and jars of home canned beans but sometimes in gardening you win and some times you kind of limp home. Just remember keep the number on your fertilizer for nitrogen low, too much will stop groth of the plant. Good luck with the garden and blessings and prayers to all 4 of you, love you, MiChelle

I had trouble with to much sun. My carrots didnt work, green beans that didn't want to do more than sprout. Ended up with beans taking off but not like I thought. Turned out I had to give them a little shade. In fact my potatoes were shriveling up way to soon. I think it was the soil temperature and the newness of the soil. Like all new soil. It didn't have enough living in it yet. Not enough worms and insects loosening up the bedding. My next year was a lot better. Potatos were bigger. Beans actually made a couple quarts and the carrots were better but still small and deformed. To compacted soil. In fact every thing was 150% better the next year. I don't need the bird netting any more. Good luck, I'm sure you will get it. That is a good idea too. To have your local Tennasee Ag department analyze your soil. I'm in Illinois but we have that available to us.Have fun.

All over the place, gardeners have been having trouble, past couple years, with purchased soil being contaminated with various herbicides. Possible now you.... Plus, you likely don't need to fertilize for a couple years with what you've put in already. A soil test from a lab will give you nutrient levels. In my area, those tests are available from an agricultural college, $60 last time I had one done. Example: my test showed an overabundance of nitrogen. And that was definitely causing me poor tomato and cucumber crops in my home garden.

Ypur metal beds in full sun maybe adding to your soil temps. Consider putting CORRELATED cardboard up side the exterior metal sides of your raised beds; 2" maybe 4" dead air space between cardboard and metal may help as well. You can sunshade the entire bed and the old school, cheap method is to use the thinnest, old bed sheet youve got over a central support; think out of the box for additional textile and repurposing ideas. Often 2 stable verticals and a rope the length of the bed or row was used similar to the old Boy Scout tarp tent. Hang the center of the sheet over the rope (or chicken/ hog wire tresslising) and pull the edges out to the desired, wider pitch. If you adopt the old school, farm and charming garden aesthetic you can use anything new or repurposed to expierment with. Then you can chose to upscale into a "traditional garden" aestheic with less variance, more repetition, things lined or alighned up, and purchased things; or scrounged and diy but with a less eclectic look.

Boil some eggs, with NO salt, let water cool. Water your plants with that. It’s good for plants. You can also use your cooled off coffee grounds to put on your soil. I’m not sure if used tea bags help . After they cool off. Just some ideas for you. There’s also something that egg shells do for plants.

Mulch for soil may help but may want to consider sun screen so not to cook leaves when first start to emerge

My beans did that too and it turned out to have herbicide in the soil. I saw a video that showed a person using bagged soil that had herbicide in it too. Having it tested would be a good thing. I have been adding charcoal to try to get rid of the herbicide. So far I am still having troubles and it has been 2 years.

I always enjoy y’all’s journey(s). Be aware there is a lot of suspicious stuff going on with purchased soil - even with black kow.

Well , that was sad to see … limp pole beans 🫘 😫. I guess the old saying of “ location , location, location “ takes on a whole new meaning when planting in a different state 😮 !!! This time around will be the charm ❤🙏❤️. I’m looking forward to seeing the new garden soul gadget up close with Sam !!
