The thing I love the most about this video is how a relatively low level player (I'm only in Ultra Silver so Im not much better anyway) can make a Pro (tm) smile. Those parries were sick. I hope he continues to play and improve and soon would be smoking my own ass.

Brian is completely correct. I coach competitive debate for a living and I can tell you that putting a novice (someone who has been doing debate for less than a year) and putting them up against a multi-year varsity competitor won't really teach them anything. It will just make them frustrated and want to quit, in all honesty.

Be careful when recommending blockstrings with fireballs for Gill, he doesn't really have safe options for this except the cancel into ex fireball. Normal fireball is really negative on block and has a slight gap while ice ball and ex ice ball are easily interrupted. Instead try going the normals only, maybe something like s.mp s.lk cr.mp and cancel into ex fireball. Alternatively go for light knee drop cancel, this blows some people up when pressuring if they press a lot of buttons, but this is also a bit of a gamble

you might not see this but i just hit Gold rank today. since this video, I've dropped Gill after maining him for a couple years and started playing Bison. It was a long road and it took a lot of Vs. Ryu matches, but I did it. I've improved a LOT of my punish, anti-air, and mixup proficiency. It's a big accomplishment in my eyes, but the road still isn't over. Thanks Brian :D (P.S. I didn't mash parry, I read that Flash Kick from a mile away)

Absolutely right what Brian says and i am surprised that people were puzzled by it. You CANNOT learn anything by facing anyone that such a too big skills advantage over you. This is true for ANYTHING in life. This is the reason why you get matched up with people close to your skill level by rank, so that the gap, whether it is to your advantage or not, is pretty small. Also, ranks are a consequence of you doing the right stuff and learning. Like someone said in chat, rank is the reward and not the goal. Thanks again, Brian :)

The reason why the gill player always does crouching fierce is probably the crouching fierce is combo starter taught in gill trial. I made the same mistakes when I started playing too, over-relying on the trial combo. The trial combo is usually not optimal, it simply introduces some methods of utilizing a character's toolkit.

Reaching Gold in SFV means you are starting to understand the game better. Getting past silver means you can adapt/counter a few strategies. IE: You have learned how to defeat flowchart Ken. B.dash, B.dash, fireball, fireball, v-skill run, MK, B.dash, B.dash, HK.Tatsu, B.dash, B.dash, fireball, fireball, dragon punch, etc etc.. I dont think most Bronze players can defeat a flowchart Ken. Silver players generally show they know how to use their characters bread and butter but cannot adapt to anything. If you are Bronze, you need to work on anti-airs, basic combos, and blocking. imho.

2:25 Thing is, when I learned +R I used this approach and I was pretty successful. My winrate is kind of abyssal but I now hold my own vs players I once struggled against. I've even taken a game off of Skeletal Minion. But the main difference between +R and SFV is that the latter has a ranked system. You generally have to learn how to deal with lower level players before you can move up the ranks.

I believe while playing with higher ranks, one should not always ignore the opportunities because of the skill gap. In higher ranks, they dont do silly jumps, unintended button mashing compared to us lower rank. After doing battle lounge with many high ranks (as just a silver myself) I found 3 things that were very good for me: 1. Because those matches were through discord server, the feedback on why I got bodied or why I got so close to winning but didnt is very instant. I learn straight away on things like why i shouldnt panick in corner how to play safe and such-which are things readily available on youtubes for us to learn but to experience those pressure and the sense of hopelessness against high tiers gace me much better understanding of those scenarios. 2. Gameplay 100% improves. Now I am actively getting rid of bad habbits. Things like shimmy and whiff on point is still far for me, but watching replays of those matches has certainly helped to apply those skill sets on my own gameplay. 3. The most important part for me was, the only thing about playing higher ranks is that, they can beat you with their minimal knowledge character rather than their main. So yes if may not feel like playing them on a serious note but unlike rank, I have 0 frustration of loosing as with every defeat I learn to better adapt to the game and actually have more fun. Hopefully I can translate those battle exp in my own matches effectively. So having a positive attitude and willingness to learn from those matches must be there or else you will be getting bodied here and there regardless of which rank you play.

Third strike Mongolian here. Pressing cr.hp is almost always "Because I labbed some combos, and cr.fierce leads to the most damage." Me, and pretty much everyone to ever pick up a fightstick learned what did the most damage; without actually learning how applicable that knowledge was. This is just a general mindset step that'll come with time. My advice to the player, speaking from personal experience? Worry more about what is safe and available for the time being. Kill your opponent with a thousand cuts. Chances are, you play more solid than your opponent, the mental stack gets to them, 14 seconds into the third round they do some minus 22 shit and you get the big combo that you think about in the bath, anyways!

I have shared the sentiment that ranks shouldn't be a goal you set for a while now. Learning your fundamentals and getting into a comfortable situation where you're not just throwing out random buttons during the match is something I think a lot of newer plays should strive for, and your higher ranks will come as a product of that

Hey Brian. I got a question. This might be me just being unfamiliar with SFV (but I don't think that is the case here), but I'm able to beat gold, ultra gold, and ultra silver players even though I'm stuck at super bronze. I try to approach footsies like someone who knows what they are doing, but I often get hit by all of the really dumb stuff that happens in bronze. Is there something wrong with my defense or am I thinking better than my level of play (playing as a super bronze but thinking like a gold player)?

@tenworms

You do want to be able to do stuff off of hit confirms, but there are also situations where you should know that you're guaranteed a punish. If an opponent whiffs a DP in front of you then there's no need to go for the blockstring, you know you get a full combo.

Well, since gill vs1 is usually only useful if you either drop a combo to set it up or if you waste your retribution in a sweep, you might as well just pick parry and get the occasional read that gives you advantage and feels super good to land, also to condition the opponent to stop throwing projectiles aka giving you free v gauge this is now outdated, please pick vs1 if you're bronze, thank you
