This is gonna seem like a stupid thing but thank you for taking the time to point out the different parts and their names. I’ve watched so many of these where people talk about the face side, floor, etc while there cutting the wood and as a visual learner I was so lost. The way you lay out the wood in front of the build base and show how the different parts connect was REALLY helpful.

VERY WELL put together video series. Probably the best teacher I have found on youtube for building GOOD QUALITY cabinets! The two videos ARE lengthy but Marc spares no details and I learned a few new tricks from watching this series. I totally recommend this video series if you want to build serious cabinets. Nice job Marc. Thank you. It's nice to see the way you teach. You explain the details that most every other instructional videos tend to omit. Although I will most likely build mine a bit differently, I definitely learned some valuable tips here and I like the idea of tongue/groove joinery since it is so strong! I will be building my kitchen island using this method and KNOW it will be STRONG! Awesome job on the videos!

What a fantastic video. I saw Richard from Finish Carpentry TV using your bits and started looking around. This is a FANTASTIC tutorial filled with all the school of hard knocks tips. I'm sure I'm going to cut the groove/tongue on the wrong side eventually, but that'll be on me! I love the idea of doing the face frame first to ensure everything is squared up. Thanks again. Looking forward to using your router bits.

I started using a method similar to this back in the 70s. Only way to build cabinets, especially without skilled labor. Evans had a system for pocket screws, drilled both at one time, using a large framing table with air lockdowns for aligning the face frame. Then to wide belt sander and finishing. Finished all materials before assembly. Fast accurate and anyone can assemble the cabinets.

I used this method, and his bits, to make a full set of kitchen cabinets. This was my first set and they turned out great. They are a little more expensive because you use 3/4" plywood for the cabinet. The process is so simple even an engineer like me can do it.

I purchased your tongue and groove set along with your pocket hole device. The bits do a remarkable job. The pieces fit tight together and give a lot more gluing surface. The only issue is the bits never bottom out with my Bosche router. The height needs to be adjusted every time. I even tried using some thicker stick-on cabinet bumpers and still does not touch.

I read other comments. All woodworkers do things different. I have been building cabinets and teaching carpentry for over 30 years. I have enjoyed your presentation and find it to be very beneficial to anyone who knows anything about professional work. I will probably purchase your bit set. However, if you use your table-saw to cut part of the wood away before your final cutting on the panels it does save your router and bits. Thank you for sharing. I would like to know, where you purchased your router table and what size and type of router you are using.

If you haven't tried Marc's Tongue and Groove system, you are really missing some pleasurable cabinet making. Simple, accurate and almost fool proof. As long as you have your wood dimensions set correctly and level your router fence with the router bit bearing, it is a no brainer.

Most comments below in my opinion have nothing to do with the router bits and system. I have many of Marc's systems and router bits and they work like a charm. It isn't painfully slow to build a cabinet using his system, if you are smart when cutting all your parts and you have a plan, it takes minimal time and the results are outstanding. Also, if you really want quality in your face frames, prior to assembly, use a hand plane on the faces. Sand paper can't come close to the finish you get with a quality, sharp hand plane.

You doing a good job. But there are also dados. Basically a bigger Groove where your plywood can actually fit in along with some glue and Staples or nails . Which is a way to build your frames and then attach your sides. You don't have to use pocket holes and you don't have to nail them from the front. Nailing them from the front is very hard to hide when you're staining them.

Question for you Marc - Don't mean to sound snarky, but is there really a lot of rigidity and structure when you are using a tongue and groove method, but the tongue is only a mere 1/4"? I see what is created when you use the bits you promote, but I just don't see how the whole structure will be very stable without any screws or nails and just a very thin tongue. Not being disrespectful, I really enjoyed your videos. Just wanted clarification. Thanks much

at 19:15 seconds, it looks like the end stile (the one he is gluing) is facing the wrong direction north and south. The drawer sliders will need to be flush with the drawer, and the way it looks, the final partition, or end piece will be too far away. Am I wrong?
@rb1164

No...you're absolutely right...I was paying close attention and thought...WTF? Went back and check a diagram that I was making and he said that he was putting the GROOVES 'next to' the edge where the drawers would go so that they'd line up...and he wouldn't have to 'build out' anything. He simply glued the RAILS to the wrong edge.

Romeo Whiskey At 8:43 second of the SECOND VIDEO...you can see how Marc must have discovered the reversal of the stile. He shows it CORRECTLY reversed.
@stevecox1180
@stevecox1180 10 жыл бұрын
The outboard stiles need grooves that make the side panels flush with the face frame. That means the inside of the side panel will have to be "built out” (3/4”) to make the drawer slides fit flush. On the other side of that drawer, you can cut the grooves to be flush with the drawer slide. You make the drawer openings flush when you can.
@romeowhiskey1146
@romeowhiskey1146 10 жыл бұрын
steve cox In the earlier Video 1...Marc said that he was making the right hand stile to be flush with the drawers. Obviously that meant that the right hand stile would have material remaining for scribing to a wall. He reversed the stile during the initial installation...but...CORRECTED it's orientation in Video 2 when he problem discovered the mis-alignment.

Can either the grooves or the pocket holes be moved enough that you can run the grooves the full length?
@revedmusic
@revedmusic 6 жыл бұрын
One more comment. If you are going to paint your cabinets and you are not going to stain them then a great way to fill the pocket holes is to use pre mixed drywall taping and joint compound. It comes in a small tub and you use a putty knife to spread it. it will dry at room temperature in an hour or two. Then it sands back down to the wood easier than any other material. When you prime and paint it you have spent no time on it and I think a gallon tub of drywall mud will fill 50,000 pocket holes for about 6 bucks.
@ccroberts7282

The big problem with drywall mud is it shrinks when it is drying. Use Dap Drydex to fill in the pocket holes.

I wonder why other tongue and groove router bit sets have different length shafts so you spend a lot of time lining up your bits for height. Its unnecessary wih Somerfeld's bits. I have 3 sets of T and G bits and I spend too much time getting the tongue to perfectly match the grooves. These are great videos and the use of pocket holes on the back of the face frames is completely hidden when the cabinets are complete. But I do have one question when I see how he uses the T and G method with the triangular plywood braces he uses to keep the cabinets square. To groove the dividers and the back of the face frames to accept the triangular braces seems to me like too much work with no advantage plus it allows too much room for an error to cost you. Why not just glue and pocket hole these braces to the inside corners. If you do it from the top when you add the counter top the pocket holes will never be seen again. I used solid 3/4 in. scrap for the triangles and pocket holed into the 3/4 in plywood dividers and into the back of the face frames. In the rear of the cabinets I had a 1 by 6 running full length like a horizontal let in brace to attach the cabinets to the wall and not have the cabinets offset at all. Pocket holing these corner braces end up hidden just like the others.

+Sommerfeld's Tools Marc, you need to rethink your packaging method for the the bits and box. They arrived rolling around freely in the wood box from your store on Amazon. The carbide teeth are damaged because of it. You can now have them back exactly as it was packaged, other than I put the bits back in the holders. I suggest no one actually buy these until you reply to let me know this packaging problem has been corrected. I assume they are stored in an Amazon warehouse. If so, can you somehow tell the Amazombs to pop the wood box itself open, and add some padding of some sort to help keep them in the sockets? I've never sold anything on Amazon, so I'm not sure what options you have there. One would think each item in the warehouse has side notes on it's computer file for the warehouse goons to look at when they grab to package for shipping, but who knows. At this point I'm more pissed that Amazon character limits my explanation for what is wrong, than I am that the bits are damaged. lol

tounge and groove is 1 of the oldest techniques there is .If you learned by face nailing you started off as a carpenter no cabinet maker face nails they know that it lowers the value of the workmenship. Cabinets and fixtures are 1/4 -1/3 the cost of building a home cheaply built cabinets are a negative to the value of the home . We're trying to make money not pay more to build less.

He says that pocket holes are 'pretty ugly joints', but then uses pocket hole joinery for the entire face frame, on the ONLY joints that are seen on the finished product!! LOL...great video but the system uses a combination of T&G and pocket hole joinery, very misleading..

I don't see the man answering any question posted. Or, did I miss it? Looks like too much work. I'll stick to my method.

If you have a better, not faster, easier, cheaper, but better method please post your video as soon as possible. This method makes very strong, high quality cabinets without a lot of top of the line professional power tools. Perfect for the D.I.Y. guy who wants to build his own and get top notch results. I just built over 40 running feet of cabinets for my shop and wish I had seen this earlier, I sure would have used this method.

Painfully slow system but I'd guess it is geared to the hobby types. Hope no one tries to make a living this way.

John Selensky I'm coming from an entirely different perspective. My shop is commercial only, no kitchens! But we build a wide variety of things including break room case work that is much like a kitchen. Commercial work has long been frameless (no face frames.) The advantages are many but they require a significant investment to do well and efficiently. We have been certified to AWI premium standards. I put that in because many people will claim face frame cabinets are better. The efficiency thing is where your method gets killed. Lets face it the only thing anyone has to sell is their time/life. If it take you twice as long to build a cabinet, you are in essence giving away 1/2 of your working life! Your method is fine for a hobby but way too slow to be competitive. I'll put my method up against yours and see who is spending more of their life to build a cabinet.

You have to satisfy your customer. Speed is way down on the list of requirements in most cases. My method is plenty competitive and I'll turn down work if the only thing that matters is time. No one needs to worry about my "working life". If you love what you do, it's not work anyway. If you have a problem spending time doing it, you're in the wrong business.
