And I don't think Gourley is faking his admiration for a comedy bit, because every once in a while, he'll reference a remote Conan did on Late Night, or some obscure joke he wrote on The Simpsons like thirty years ago. Matt Gourley is the audience surrogate, and that's why the dynamic works on the podcast.

Knowing that Sona didn’t give Conan approval to destroy her car makes me think about the clip (which I don’t think even made it to air) where Conan takes Jordan’s iPad and drills into it with like a hand drill, and it starts smoking. It’s when they’re planning the trip to Italy, but only in the deleted scenes.

I doubt it. They were talking on a podcast a long time ago about this. They talked about how people in the comments always assumed that Conan bought her an actual nice car behind the scenes, but that it wasn't true. And now, they are saying the same thing. Idk why they would go out of their way to deny such a nice gesture multiple times if it really happened (I know Conan is pretty humble but come on). As Sona said, Conan already gives her a lot regardless, so maybe that's enough.

I don't actually think so, cause she's brought this up several times, if he had she wouldn't be (jokingly) complaining about it. But of course I'm sure she got compensated well for appearing on the segments, bonuses, etc. and now with the podcast, she is definitely making way more than she would strictly as Conan's assistant, so Conan has done a lot for her financially. But no, it's way funnier if he didn't get her a nice car after that segment.

Considering what a softboy lovefest all his other podcasts are I absolutely agree with Gourley that he had to learn this behavior from Conan. "With Gourley and Rust" is ostensibly a podcast about horror movies but listeners of the early episodes know it's really about making a new best friend. Kinda like how "Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend" is ostensibly about making new friends but is actually a horror show!

From the filthy writer's nest, where he was beloved by the rest of the staff and contributing to the most influential show of two generations (so far), to the centre of public eye where he was immediately criticized and berated and untrusted to handle the position he has obviously since proven to that he deserved outright. I started listening to the podcast from the first episode and it's been a thrill ride, and Conan is hilarious and I laugh almost as much as I did with his show in the early 2000s (peak Conan, if you want zany explosive energy). But it does sort of have a bit of a mean streak to it, I know they're kidding but there's a touch of insult comedy that makes me a wee bit uncomfortable, and I feel like I'm watching Gourley changing from it. I don't 'know, probably just me. They discuss it on the Julia Louis-Dreyfuss episode and Conan admits he's best when he's mean.
