Unfortunately, we don't have any black bass here in Switzerland, but I catch a lot of pike with chatter baits. It works best if you let it sink to the bottom, wait 1-2 seconds, then reel it in with 2-3 turns of the crank and then let it sink to the bottom again. The bites usually come when you start cranking again.

Hi Miles! Great video, sir. I love the yo-yo in the Spring, the largies just seem to go nuts over it when they're in the creek arms but not on the beds yet. I love that 1/2 oz Big Blade CB for the yo yo it falls slower. I can't believe you didn't mention burning it! Maybe you don't use that technique but its FUN and big largies hit it. I like the 3/4 oz Jackhammer and I reel it almost as fast as I physically can. It stays about 3'-4' under the surface with your tip down. Put a trailer hook (or two) on and HOLD ON to your rod.

Thank you! I agree with everything you mentioned! I honestly think of a burning retrieve as a variation of the straight retrieve but just reeling it ultra fast, but it certainly is very effective sometimes.

Good video and thank you for the tips. It's one of my favorite baits as well. I have another technique, let it sink to the bottom, and drag it over rocky cover like a crawdad and let it stop briefly, and repeat. It resembles a fleeing crawdad especially with a good trailer. It's almost like the yo-yo, but more gentle, just lift a little bit to keep it just off the bottom, pause, repeat. You could almost say it's like a hybrid between your yo-yo and ripping techniques, only slower. Obviously, green pumpkin is a great color for this.

The biggest fish I catch come from the rip & stop method with a slight alternative. After casting it out to a target, I let it sink to the bottom and give it a couple of sharp rips with the rod to really get the blade thumping. As I let it back down, hold on. It's like the fish watched it fall into the water and drop to the bottom and once it gets ripped away from them, they can't stand it. Rip it like you're trying to get an inline spinner's blades started. It's like a cat toy, I guess.

In my home body of water here in upstate New York, I'm forced to use wire leaders because of the monstrous pike that live alongside the bass in the thick milfoil. Do you have any pointers as to which of your retrieves might be more suitable for a heavier rig? I'm not sure that the 'Rip-N-Stop' would be the best one, given the cover and the wire leader. 🤔
@SonarFishing7 ай бұрын
Yeah, pike are definitely an issue for sure! I would say if you’re forced to use a wire leader, a straight retrieve with some pops of the rod might be a simple and effective retrieve for the situation.

@@SonarFishing Thanks! I learned an expensive lesson a few years back when I lost 9 spinnerbaits and 4 chatterbaits to pike in a single season. The pond I fish at has an outlet to a major river a few miles away; when the water level was high, the pike came in. Once the water receded, the pike were trapped, and have been in competition with the bass for a few seasons now. 😢

Sorry, winding over pulling does not change the direction of the chatterbaits reaction. You are shortening the line between you and the bait. Speed can of course vary (with either retrieve), but DIRECTION is the same.
@SonarFishing5 ай бұрын
This is true depending on what degree your rod is at while pulling or winding. The biggest key for that technique is winding is much better because you can keep your rod in position to set the hook when you get the bite, while pulling will have the rod all the way back in a position where you have no more range of motion for a hook set. Thank you for the feedback. It is of course not my intention to make it seem as though individual viewers don’t know what they’re doing, and I honestly would prefer to leave a title more neutral myself. Unfortunately the responses to more neutral titles don’t work consistently enough to drive people to click on the video in most cases. I for one would never intentionally put down someone and what I assume they know, or don’t know, on a topic, but I do work very hard on the content that I put out on a daily basis, and I believe it will help people catch more fish and so I want to use a title that can do well from an algorithm standpoint. That being said, a line I will never cross on this channel is picking on any single individual- because in the end I am not to say what you specifically do or do not know. Thank you for watching and your feedback, and I just want you to know that I always strive to be respectful to every person on this channel.
