JonLajoie, this was pretty damn awesome. I'm an American College Student, and because of the shitty media coverage here, I hadn't even heard of this happening 'til now, more than two years later. I love your comedy, but appreciate even more that you are aware and involved with serious happenings in the world as well. Thanks for being willing to step up and say something for what you believe in, as well as for making me laugh my ass off for several years now.

Awesome song, i had not heard of the Quebec student protests, raising of tuition fees from $2,168 to $3,793, same bullshit happened in the UK although the rise was from £3000 to £9000 a year.

Juste, merci. Juste, merci.

education should not be expensive. in fact, i think it should be covered by taxes and I do not see any reason why this should not be the case. in germany i have to save 180€ each month on my own for tuiton fees which is more than 2000€ a year. and due to being a student i am not allowed to work more than 20 hours a week or else i'd have to pay more taxes and health ensurance which would be ridiculous. 2000€ is one fourth of my whole income. and no, i don't get any support from my family.

Oo Where do you study in germany? I only pay like 500 € for a whole year tuition, which is basically a train ticket and organizing fees. Education is free in germany. Train tickets and Forms are not, but that is mindbogglingly cheap. I don't get any support either, this is why i work 2 days on the side. Now its one day, but soon its gona be 2 again, I need my weekend alcohol and weed, because exams are OVER XD!

Yeah, education should be affordable and government should be forced OUT of education, out of money printing, out of business regulations, out of income taxes, out of health care, out of any activity that has nothing to do with actually protecting individual rights of people (and that does not mean stealing from some to subsidise any others).

Exactly you don't care about human happiness or productivity at all, you lack empathy therefore you don't want to help people even if it will result in innovation. You reject my approach for that reason I think the solution is to to have a peace revolution and perhaps replace it with stateless direct democracy. I realize our situation is too fucked up to work within or at least fully fix it.

Also oligopoly? would you even for a second compare the vast amounts of inequality and the corruption it's fostered in the US to the nordic countries? I have to say you seem ignorant of all the data, people consistently year after year scoring the happiest in those countries or the much lower crime rates. But sure over here in the USA we love our country!!! Here he have high levels of fundamentalism and fanaticism. how great. Other countries are envious of our freedom and great incoming college

Again this is ignorance of economics. It's like educating that repair man so that he has a job which requires more training. Your analogy is more akin to what US private contractors did in iraq. There was an excellent graph a few days on truthout showing the job creation potential comparing the military to education (which had the highest potential). Again there's many many things could be read on this, look. Don't watch the MSM or whatever

Do you use skype? Shop at ikea? Who do you think produces the weapons which fund the US' military industrial complex? Look at the actual statistics and not just some conservative 'look at the world and what you feel, USA USA USA'. Read the economist along with japan the nordic countries rate much higher in innovation the past few years. It'd be great to go to a nordic one, although that's a whole other story.

It is not because we defend our language and culture that we are racist. You know nothing about racism, we Quebecers are an ethical and linguistic minority and we have suffered racism and discrimination during hundreds of years. We only defend our language and culture. When I look at English forum about the student strike it is full of comment calling us fucking french, frog, peasoup and cry baby. You always deny English racism against Quebecers and when we defend ourselves, you call us racist.

People who say that this is ridiculous as Quebec has the lowest tuition rates in Canada are missing the point. It isn't the fact that these students couldn't afford a hike in rates, it's a matter of principle and a matter of standing up and showing the government what matters to the people. Protest gives citizens a voice. Education should be accessible to everyone, rates shouldn't go up in any province. I go to school in NS, one of the highest rates in Canada, and fully supported this protest.

This has no link at all with the fight that occured against the decision made by the Liberal governement on education fees. You just insulted a whole nation for the sake of it. You don't even know why we try to defend our language and when a quebecer reads what you just wrote, he knows you don't know shit about us. Inform yourself, maybe you'll learn to love while thinking instead of hate for no reasons. We fight for us, we fight to survive and we won't back down, no matter what.

I see plenty clear. I paid for my own education by working for the money. How did we even get to "deserve" has getting an education in Canada become inordinately expensive, since I graduated? Education should be supported by the government, yes; but higher education, like professional sports, is not for everyone. If money is a problem, that's what scholarships are for. Don't whine because you're not good enough to make the next Open, and expect to get a trophy for being sub-par.

I didn't misunderstood it, I just said it was irrelevant because we don't know the fixed costs and the variable costs. Saying that fixed costs is something really important in ALL cases is not true. But it is true, 22 billion dollar deficit can not be easily dismissed, but it doesn't mean that it can not be dismissed at all. If you fail to realize that, you really need to take philosophy classes. And I would like to know for what years your numbers are from and where to find them. Thanks

We are the only province in Canada that does 2 tax reports per year, one in Quebec and one in Ottawa. We also have double almost every ministry, one in Quebec and one in Ottawa. If we eliminate all of this we would have more than 2 billion in our pocket. Also, the Canadian flag never was in the national assembly before 2003 but I guess nobody cares before that. Also, every province gets money from Ottawa, why don't you talk about them stealing your money?
@ImCalledGreg
@ImCalledGreg 12 жыл бұрын
Quebec has less dept than the majority of the country in OEDC (the richest countries in the world) Canada gives us about 2 billion dollars per year. What you dont probably know is that if we count all of the double ministries Quebec will have more money as a country. We make 2 tax report per year, if we eliminate just that procedure, we will have 600 million dollar in our pocket that we don't have to pay for administrative work.

What are some of the reasons that Quebec has the highest tax rates? Maybe it's because the government taxes the whole society for things like the cheapest post secondary schooling in north america along with supporting $7 day care, just to name a few. Why myself and everyone else in Quebec has to pay higher taxes so that some can go to university for peanuts and so others can have cheap babysitters is beyond me. I say lower taxes for 100% and raise university fees for all who use the schools.
@StonedViper

My argument makes perfect sense, i will surely need health care at some point during the course of my life. On the other hand i will no longer ever personally need the services of a school and thus i should not be forced to support other peoples use of such establishments. If by some chance i ever find myself using the services of a school again i would then without complaint be fully willing to pay the full appropriate costs associated with the frequenting of the establishment.

First, nobody is complaining about the schools being bad, we have great Cegep and Universities. Also, what the fuck is wrong with the fact that we DON'T want to pay 75% more in 5 YEARS ! Normally with the inflation it would normally be 2-3% each year, so it is a lot of money. How a student who need to pay an apartment, his school, his food, phone, electricity, internet, clothing with minimum wadge? And fuck it this is NOT America, schools are supposed to become gradually free in Québec. ROUGE!

Well, i can give you another, like third reich (free and compulsory), but my point isn't saying how many countries have free, or almost free edutacion. Education shall be free in basics, like reading, writing, basics of geography, maths, history and so on, but things advanced, shouldn't be 100% free (except individuals that are exceptionally intelligent). In Poland there's unusual situation, where there's more masters that simple workers, because there's a lot of free universities.

The song was pretty funny though. :D Lose democracy when dont like antisocialism is funny! :) Actually, democracy drives to socialism, it's natural and logic. Free education is a catastrophy: ex. Poland (i'm Pole and i'm telling you, it's just bad) On the other hand, cost of education in Canada is horribly high, can't dissagree, and that's Y there's should be some (little) help from goverment.
@humanking2212
@humanking2212 12 жыл бұрын
whilst i agree that it costs more to pay for school and miss out a whole semester to manifest for a raise that isn't all that large, the main argument is not that they want free education, is that we have the highest tax rate in the country, hell almost in the world, thus, it's supposed to pay for education. If the government would show why it needs to raise the price it might pass, but Our PM doesn't bother explaining, that's the biggest issue honestly.

Well I've got good news for you... Actually you don't. All the bullshit about equalization payments have to stop. Search on google how it fucking work. All the provinces pay the same % of federal taxes, then the money is all merged together and then some provinces receive some money for many different reasons. Actually Manitoba received much more equalization than Qc and P.E Island received twice as more as Qc and their tuition are even lower and fuck did you ear anyone bitching about it? Never

Tell me how you know about the real issue and you're not just spitting out what you've heard random people say. The welfare is paid by our taxes and that taxes money is far enough so that we could literally pay nothing directly for education and still can invest in every other aspect of society adequately. This country was built on the idea of welfare if you're not happy with it maybe we should split it up in two countries and do it our own way maybe every one would be happier that way...

Good old Quebec, a province who takes around 50% of the equalization payments, in effect regardless of how high the taxes are in this dreadful place, you still need the rest of Canada to pay. This is a province whose chief exports include a butchered, guttural form of one of the most beautiful languages in the world and asbestos. Frankly, I'm not sure which one is more poisonous.

yes , but they pay up to 45% of their salary back as income tax + there's a 15% tax on everything we buy ( not taking into account things that haves taxes on the taxes like cigarettes or gaz for an example ) and the reason why they pay that much taxes : free medical care and low tuition rates are the top 2 reasons . Now the tuitions fees are supposed to double in the next 5 years , are you saying that it's reasonable ? That they are just bitchin' for the heck of it ?

To keep our advantage of low tuition fees, because we have high taxes to keep them low. Its also in general against the governement in place because they do things that the population dosent agree with and they lack legitimity according to a certain number of persons. I can honestly tell you I don't know if I would have heard about the students if not for Jon, if I did hear about them, it was after. He's bringing a very important subject to a vast amount of people who probably wouldn't have heard of it. So while it may be dangerous, I think it's honorable. Well we want the same change, and i do think the overall change is greater then the means. I guess that's where we part ways, because governments haven't done us anything from being passively pissed off. Evident since they were threatening to raise tuition before these protests. So, all of the other provinces including the one i live in, can pay higher tuition while the people in quebec get something done.

I would say by canada's standards, shown by the uproar of the strikes. The charter does mention freedom of thought, opinion, and expression, and the medium for acquiring these skills and developing these skills is taking advantage, which some may argue is unconstitutional. Even if this is a stretch don't you think it's the government's job to help us prosper. after all they exist for us not the other way around- to paraphrase jon lajoie

People keep saying it's a right to learn, which in principle it is, but it is not a right to go to a university to do it. It is a place of business full of employees who rely on the money provided to survive. What about the electricity? Not free. The heat in the winter? The AC in the summer? Not free. Universities require money to run and that money has to come from somewhere, whether taxes, tuition, or a combination of both. So if you cannot afford to go, buy a textbook and read it yourself.

Why is that funny no doubt their are alot of People closer to the situation that are supporting the cause. The cause is much bigger than tuition, it is the fact that the Canadian charter of human rights and freedoms has been almost completely overturned by four Harper bills and the Canadian Police force is now beig run as any police state run by a facist regime. What we need is some old FLQ boys to grab a couple dozen of these cops and make them earn their 120 k a year

Given those statistics (that I'm aware of anyways), don't you think it's even a better reason to make the students pay a bit more for tuition (they'd STILL be underpaying compared to almost anywhere else!) instead of burdening today's workers with more tax? Government is not perfect, there are things to be fixed, but it's not an excuse to avoid doing one's part and that includes higher education. The only mistake that was made was when tuitions were frozen in Quebec between 1994 and 2007.

I said it was only an academic question. Obviously paying for the infastructure, and the subsidies for students for 35yr and then getting to pay for higher tuitions, with less subsidies and higher hidden costs for my daughter, I would be upset by someone immegrating to this country I paid for, paying a fraction of what I paid and receiving all the benefits while I receive non. My problem has nothing to do with you ,it's my Government. I should have been given a choice whether I wanted to pay.

Now they tell me I'm not even going to get my pention till 67. explain the justice?

Funny to see!!! Here are the students with the highest IQ's in the world, the best marks, unmatched drive and determination being chastized by internet people with at best local college 2 cent degree's. As of 2011, McGill ranked 1st in Canada and 17th in the world in the QS World University Rankings.McGill was ranked 19th in the world for popularity among major employers.In the Maclean's 21st Annual University Ranking (2011), McGill was ranked 1st for the seventh year in a row.

I'm not trolling, and I'm not even Boxxy. But for reals...if this system of self-entitlement continues, and say, we allow the educational system to DEVOLVE towards a "no child left behind" policy, the weakest link (mind) will dictate what you learn. Calculus was once mandatory in high schools, and now it's in first year university. What next, no math until you grow "adult hair"? Damn it. Stupid people make me angry. I'm sure some of you here will think I'm a "stupid people"--no, you are.

Libya, Cuba, North Korea, Greece, Spain, Italy or Japan to name a few... Québec is up with those. But seeing as how I don't live in any of the countries mentioned above, I could never know how bad they have it, I know they have it bad, but I would never jump to conclusions. You have to go through something to understand what it's like. It's just logic. You can't understand what it's like to be robbed if you've never been robbed, and our government is literally robbing us.

shannon0true, even though I haven't said if I live in Quebec or not, I do find this statement "If you do not live in Québec, you cannot understand the horror the Québécois province is going through." to be ridiculous. It's often used by people who think that others have to live in their shoes to be able to understand something. Enlighten me, oh civilised wise-one, on what is so severe a situation in Quebec (like as if no other places in the rest of Canada or elsewhere have "situations")...

In alberta we pay 5 times what they pay in tuition. What they're raising it up to still equates to the LEAST AMOUNT OF TUITION IN THE COUNTRY, so there is absolutely no reason to bitch and complain about it.i agree that charest's bill went to far and crossed the line, im not disputing that. But these students they still play least amount of tuition in the country, and its not like they live in the middle east where you're worrying about survival and not something as petty as tuition hikes.

Drastic times demand drastic measures my friend. Although I don't agree with everything that's going on (I myself personally hope that I won't be touched this and that I will be able to continue my education), things must be done in order for there to be change. There have been arrests on both sides (student extremists and corrupt governmental officials) and things are starting to look a little better because some people decided to finally take a stand.

There is no such thing as same opportunity to succeed. The moment you are born, genetics, family, location are all different. Thats why we try to provide unfortunate kids until high school education which I consider is enough. I mean I believe poor kids should work harder. For example if I were naturally slow at running, I would have to work harder than talented athletes to be faster than them. In my case, since my family is not rich, I busted my ass studying and received full scholarship.

you said "the people who are willing to pay (willing to learn)". Those are not the same thing. Many people are not born into a family that can provide them with higher education, simply because they cannot afford it. This in my opinion is a huge issue, everybody should have the same opportunity to succeed. "free" education would give this opportunity to those people and would also create a more competitive environment at University because there would be more students.

Quebec students pay the least for there tuition compared to the rest of Canada. I pay over 6-7 thousand a year. Quebec students pay at least half. Now they protest on the streets over a 300$ dollar increase for next year. as the saying goes, "Quebec est la province des bébé lala" ......... just last year Canada had 13 bil to distribute around for the provinces. guess who got 7 bil? take a wild one.

Your terrible writing caused me to assume that's what you were trying to say. Also, learn to write "you're" and not your since I do not possess "on the internet". I am also going to go and assume "you're" better at French because you lack the ability to read (which you said was your awful writing) and write properly. And I'm sure there's more Mandarin people here than French people so no thanks.

I dont want to make you be on ouyr side,but i want to explain to you why we are struggling so fiercefully to stop the hike...We,as a nation, do not want to privilege corporation over people. I personally dont care about paying a little more to get educated. The thing that infuriate me is that our goverment is paying private companies to dig up our ressources with the money they take from our education system.we pay a LOT of taxes to pay our schools,and now we would to pay even more for corps?

Taxes are not the only way for governments to raise finance. Are you familiar with much fiscal/monetary policy? Je ne suis pas une Quebecois. From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. Its like you're already forgetting about the vast inequalities between the rich and the poor across Western society! And all capitalist society, because that's the way capitalism works, especially in its mature form as we find today.

We've been paying over 15% of taxes here (really different than in the states!), our situation is not the same at all than the U.S.. Also, we don't see a very big chunk of our salaries. Our money should be paying easily for free healthcare and education for all!!!! But don't feel bad, even some people from here like to compare our situation with you guys to prove a point or other provinces which pay half our taxes. Of course, you have to be stupid (or not from here) to give them credit!

Haha what do you mean "What's happening there"? That international financial crisis, coupled with the eurozone crisis caused by... what? Students? Universities? Lecturers? Or an ineffective, inefficient, greedy banking system? Its not free- its free at the point of service. You pay for it in taxes. Why should you have a socialised military but a privatised education system? Seems a little backwards. Seems a little disgusting.

I'm from the U.S., and i would like to briefly share my opinion, as reading the comments section was plenty to form one. I understand that this is a good cause, but what's so bad about paying for university tuition? You are acting like the government is manipulating you and opressing the lower class, but tuition is nowhere near free in the U.S. and none of us complain. And although it may be mostly due to the amount of money our government owes and does not have, they do not help much. I feel l

I'm dumbstruck at reading this... I assume you are American? Only an American would think that. Btw, i have a MsC in engineering in the top school of my country. a Public university. and I would never accept the private, 'privileged' education system you advocate. Education is not a business. Students don't "miss classes" to save money or whatever, if they want to learn and/or get the degree, they go, else they don't.

Yeah, Sweden where they have really high educational standards. And its free... Across Europe, so many institutions have free education at the point of service. Look at education in the UK, the USA; paying for education has not improved quality. You're assuming that there is a causal relationship between the high fees associated with ivy leagues and the high costs. Look at capitalism. That failed economic model... That relies on competition... and ought to create perfect markets...

They are not demanding that the rest of the county pay for the them. You do not know the situation, so don't make such foolish remarks. They are pleading for the Québecois government to abolish corruption and to pull money from other places that are not being exploited to the fullest (resources, taxation on big companies) instead of attacking the students. This does not regard the rest of Canada, this is purely provincial.

Yeah, I am a graduate. A degree isn't necessarily about getting a job in what it is - its about transferable skills that you can take to the workplace. That's in terms of employability anyway. If Education is free for all, then you can raise the standards of entry, because people don't feel entitled to go just because they can afford it. And that's what happens, the rich can afford it so they go, and the poor are intimidated by huge loans. I haven't met any students with "No stake."

Why can't North America be like other countries, where tuition is free. Hell, some countries even pay you to pursue higher learning. In the end you have a more well educated population, which means a wealthier nation at the end of the day. I can't tell you how many I know never went to college or University because they couldn't afford. Me and a few of my friends who weren't so financially gifted are busting our asses to make enough money to even have the privilege of going to school.

With all due respect for Ontario, the thing is that Quebec has heard of Sweden (0$ tuition fees), Norway (0$ tuition fees), Spain (0$ tuition fees), Argentina (0$ tuition fees), Finland (0$ tuition fees), France (0$ tuition fees), Nederland (lower than Quebec tuition fees), Germany (lower than Quebec tuition fees), Scotland (0$ tuition fees), Belgium (0$ tuition fees) and Denmark (0$ tuition fees). That's why Quebec rejects a 75% raise of tuition fees imposed by a corrupt-to-the-bone government.
