This song was actually written by the Pat Metheny Group as an instrumental. David Bowie added vocals for the song to be in the movie The Falcon & The Snowman. A lot of the synthesizer and orchestral sounds were played by Pat Metheny on a guitar. Pat had a Roland guitar connected to a Synclavier II system

Pat a composé, comme à son habitude dans le duo avec Lyle, la mélodie principale de la chanson, mais la quasi-totalité des autres parties sont composées, arrangées et jouées par Lyle et le groupe (Steve Rodby à la basse, Paul Wertico à la batterie et Pedro Aznar aux percussions et aux chœurs). David a écrit des paroles sur la mélodie et interprété la chanson (ainsi que les chœurs). Le morceau fut initialement baptisé "Chris", avant de prendre son nom définitif sur la bande originale du film de Schlesinger "The Falcon & The Snowman" en 1985.

If you'd like to see a very moving rendition of this song I recommend this live example from 2000 from the BBC. I really feel this is Bowie at his most impassioned. As well known and acknowledged as Bowie is in rock, Metheny is his equal in jazz. Pat has played with everyone(Joni Mitchel, Jaco Pastorius, etc., etc. and everyone has played with with Pat.) And I think one could infer that David (being a sax, keyboard and guitar player) appreciates and respects PM, and I'm certain it goes the other way as well.

If you see The Falcon and the Snowman it will give you more of an appreciation of the music. This John Schlesinger classic film is right up there with the greats I think. Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton at their best in a true story made for the screen.

Falcon and the Snowman was the movie ( excellent one too , true story about boyhood friends who sold CIA secrets to the Russians and were subsequently imprisoned for life ) with Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton 1985ish I think …..not a bad song . Ok for the film ( and the mood of the song suits it ). Not a Bowie classic ( but I do like it )
