Naya was the real revelation of that show... her timbre was the more mature between the girls, her range and control allowed her to sing any genre with a strong mesmerizing signature: pop, r&b, soul, broadway etc
@dd2394 Жыл бұрын
I never felt she was a strong singer until much later in the show, she didn't have the classic range of a Lea Michele, nor did she have Lea's control, she was meant for popular music, unfortunately for her she went with the hip hop stuff for her solo work and flopped.

Tbh, knowing that the 2021 WWS was sung live by Debose and Zegler….and they were just so on point emotionally, I just can’t totally wrap around this version. It’s definitely better than the 1961 version though (again knowing that Michele and Rivera actually sang their version). On the whole though I think Glee was underrated by the music/acting industry, which is sad.
@fartyfat65392 жыл бұрын
i know im 2 months late, but Glee casts are one of the most talented casts of any tv show i have ever watched. There's soo many amazing actors and singers in Glee, some even without any prior professional acting and singing experience. For example, you could take Lea, Amber, and Naya and you can actually put them beside some of the best singers in the industry right now. Like that's insane for a single (comedy) show to have that many talent.
@GraciesMom2 жыл бұрын
@@fartyfat6539 I agree-I wish there were more shows that had this kind of singing talent. Zoeys Extraordinary Playlist is the only show that comes close and of course it’s canceled now. You may want to catch that show--it’s got an interesting premise. 💕

So I am very late in seeing this video, but I scrolled through some of the comments and didn't see this particular thought about why Lea switches from contemporary to classical in the middle. I think it is actually a cut. I believe the argument section of the original song goes on longer and that they probably cut it down and went straight to I Have a Love to keep it to the required time. Because it does sound a bit abrupt, not just vocally, but in the structure of the song.
@MorganR18142 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reacting to the version I recommended on Patreon. I thought this version was better to listen to because it is the full studio version rather than the performance that was shown on tv. Also really liked the comparing of this version to the new and old West Side Story movies. In my opinion this is an underrated Rachel and Santana duet and I think it is because the tv version is edited so this song is heard in the background for dialogue for 2 other characters. The cover sounds so much better in the full studio version because you get to hear the Naya and Lea's vocal changes/choices throughout the song instead of the dialogue overlapping with the cover of the song.

Honestly, I think this is the shakiest I’ve heard Lea and I think she’s blending the two styles because she doesn’t have this style as strong as the more contemporary stuff. She’s not the strong soprano you need to be to truly pull off Maria. The higher she gets, especially on “all my days” the tighter the notes are and they don’t contain the resonance of her chest voice and mix. She may technically have the range but I don’t think she practices that high enough to have built those muscles yet. Maria’s a first soprano and I believe Lea is comfortably a mezzo.
@dd2394 Жыл бұрын

@@dd2394 Hi there! I did look up and listen to that video, but she isn’t singing a high soprano there. 5:07, I disagree with your comments. In the new movie Rachel Zeigler was also mixing up until she said the word “heart“, where she went back into her head voice. Lea Michele took longer to get back into her voice and waited until the very next phrase. That’s the only difference there. They were both mixing styles in that segment of the song to me. Go back a few seconds and you’ll see what I mean.

I know you’re thinking the way you are because you’re focused on vowels only. You’re right, the other two actresses kept the vowels around the whole time, whereas Leah switched between something wider and then going back to round. And that is important, but it’s a combination of register and vowels that I look at when defining classical versus contemporary.

Interesting comments, no disagreement. However, there's one famous recording of this that would have greatly influenced Naya. That's the one that Selena did. It was one of if not the last recording she did. `The Songs of West Side Story,'' an all-star benefit album where she sang this in a studio. It's haunting kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH_XdmZ_o6qjeMk Other famous singers sang as with 'Miscast' on the album. The project ended up using the talents of Aretha Franklin and Phil Collins (who both insisted on singing "Somewhere"), Little Richard, Wynonna Judd, Trisha Yearwood, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Chick Corea, Natalie Cole and All- 4-One, so Selena, by comparison, was relatively unknown at the time of the recording. "We had a rather difficult time getting the people to allow her to come in without having a whole bunch of other people also audition for the part," said Greene. "But we were convinced she was the right person." "When we cast her to do `A Boy Like That,' we knew that she could take her style and also add to that a very urban context," Greene said. Her presence in the completed project adds an unintentional poignance now. Selena was murdered by the president of her fan club last March 31. She was 23. And when a posthumous album was released that July, her first foray in her native language --(English), --it entered the charts at No. 1. Listening to "A Boy Like That" now, says Greene, "God only knows what she would have ended up doing in terms of crossing over to pop music and R&B; music." Michael McDonald and James Ingram share chores on an orchestral "Maria." Chick Corea squares off with Steve Vai on "The Rumble." Patti Austin, Bruce Hornsby and Mervyn Warren of Take 6 join in "Cool." And "Gee, Officer Krupke" begins with a rhyme by Def Jef, continues with Salt-N-Pepa, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of TLC and ends with the Jerky Boys and Paul Rodriguez. But Selena handles the often difficult "A Boy Like That" all by herself. " `A Boy Like That' was one of the shortest songs of the original score, and it was particularly difficult to expand and contemporize," according to liner notes by album producer and arranger David Pack, who conceived the new recording as a tribute to his friend, composer Leonard Bernstein. "After my first two-hour conversation with Selena, her spirit crystallized the direction for the new jack/Latin vibe, which she loved, and after the recording sessions we talked about this being one of the cool little tunes of the project," Pack said. 10:21 if I remember well, she said to Finn that she needed to do this just for her character and he got mad.

Something that makes it really hard for me to enjoy watching Lea Michelle is that she closes her eyes all the time. I feel like emotions are most clearly conveyed through the eyes and closing them when singing is a very pop thing, very self indulgent and it takes me out of a musical theatre moment when it's done so frequently. I actually closed MY eyes listening to this and preferred it to when I watched it.

@@GA-fn8hr yes. If she was mediocre, there'd be no point, but she has a fantastic voice so it's fair to note some of the smaller things. Like when Audrey was pointing out things about Rachel Zegler's performance in Tonight, but didn't with Elgort.
