If you're wondering who's playing bass, it's still John Paul Jones, playing bass pedals with his feet while also playing the clavinet (electric piano).

This song was inspired by Robert Johnson's song Terraplane Blues (a Terraplane was a type of car manufactured in the 1930s, I believe), in which the lyrics liken the body of a woman to the parts of a car. It allowed for all sorts of sexual innuendo like "Mama let me pump your gas" and "Baby I can work all night/Believe I've got the perfect tools" among others. John Paul Jones said he got the keyboard inspiration from Stevie Wonder's song Very Superstitious. You can tell that they could have jammed on this song all night long. Their improvisational abilities were phenomenal and it's no wonder their concerts lasted over 2 hours at least. Jimmy's guitar improvisation skill is legendary. Some people consider him a "sloppy" player and Jimmy himself would agree; he's never claimed to be a technical player and has said (paraphrasing) "I don't deal in technique, I deal in emotion". The heart and soul of all 4 is clearly evident in all they created.

What a great live jam band! The original release was about 5 1/2 mins. they almost double that on stage. Page's solo work on stage is truly stream-of-consciousness, spur-of-the-moment improvisation

I believe he still has the bulk of his fantastic stage costumes. As well of most of his guitar rigs (other than the stolen ones) which he has tried to replace.

Jimmy has reclaimed all of his major stage costumes, after several years of wrangling with various parties. You can see the suits in rich detail in "Jimmy Page: The Anthology" book. What's more interesting is an unfinished 1975 Egyptian-themed suit that was abandoned in mid-design. That suit is in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Foot-steppin' lol. That's great. You have got to check out the studio version of this because it's much slower and so therefore there's a whole much more room in it that you can really feel how they layered this song like a jigsaw puzzle on it so incredibly funky. But it yet it is so relentless it is hard driving. But this live performance of it is also mind-blowing. I would almost argue this belongs more in the post-punk category that it does in the Rock category there's just something about it. And Bonzo is just tearing up the terrain tearing it up. You mentioned a lot of qualities about it but I would also add in the quality of endurance. And I think you hinted at it with the link to their sets, but even this one song would wear a whole lot of drummers out. Playing with that intensity? And the thing was he played real hard. He was one of those people that he hit that stuff really hard. Anyway, that band never ceases to amaze me.

@@NAIATHEDRAGON and it's hard work. Mentally I mean. I don't know if you've ever thought about it but for example I play guitar and sing so I've got to be able to do two things at once. They call it independence. If you can get different parts of your body and your mind to act independently enough to do different things at the same time and yet still I'll be tied together ultimately, that's called independence. But at a minimum, a drummer must have four way Independence year two arms and you're two legs. And then there are some drummers that sing as well. But also for me, sometimes I need to put a little attention at least into how I'm moving on the stage. Am I rocking out? What am I doing. I don't want to overanimate it, but I want to allow at least to happen depending on what the flow is right then. So there's many things to manage as well plus you got to remember all these lyrics if you're doing a long set. So there's that kind of lyrical and mental endurance as well. But in a band like that? You can think of everybody in there as like top level Elite athletes, just Musical athletes. And yet there's such a tight team that they know each other inside and out. That's why the band ended when Bonzo died. Which by the way check out some shit off there last album, in through the out door. It's wonderful.

If you want to see where this song originated, check out The Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running". It's a good funky song that Zeppelin "borrowed" and "Zeppelinized", also changing the lyrics. It's probably easier to connect it to the studio version of this song, since this live version is even more "uptempo", but you'll probably see how the underlying structure of this song is taken from the Doobie's song. Enjoy!
