The people who write the songs that power the music industry carve their own unique road to the Grammys. Don Dahler met with successful songwriters Kara DioGuardi, Justin Tranter and Ross Golan for a revealing glimpse into their peculiar brand of poetry.

Thank You, someone speaking sense!! I personally saw this as a celebration of their talent and letting them have a little of the spotlight for once and NOT people exposing the industry. For as long as there's been music there's also been co-writers that don't perform what they write and i'm surprised at how many people didn't know that.

it comes from the purists and snobs who live in a dreamworld thinking that all artists should write their songs all by themselves, that their "god given talent" should be so pure and genuine that outside influence can only diminish their genius.

HOLISTIC SONGWRITING...nice one for producing a superb solid songwriter's forum.. Poppy Paul....Totally agree with your thoughts. One or two things many folk are forgetting here is that there are specialists in every area of the music world. There are singers, there are lyricists and there are composers. On top of this there is Management(when things start to grow beyond the norm..SUCCESS arrives and everything has to be catered for on an Industrial scale). Very rarely does one artist arrive on the planet who is exceptional as a singer, lyricist and composer(and can manage themselves). Therefore folk are needed to fill these voids. That's where TEAMWORK and sharing the load comes in. Where artists fail sometimes is, it seems, is that those artists are not recognising or not accepting that other lyricists and composers may just be on another level compared to them, which can hand them a better chance of success. Most(not all) of the strongest, most successful songs down through history have been written and adjusted, then re-written by teams of individuals who, in their own area are bright and exceptional in their own area of excellence.. Possibly the biggest word in the Music Industry which floats around some top folk is the simple word SHARE. Some artists can nail a great song(in full), then spend the next thirty years working in a shed(so to speak) on their own, not realising that by just opening up and developing the ability to share a project with a few exceptional folk(and recognising both party's gifts), this move alone can bring one and all great success. Personally i think one of the biggest areas artists should explore is development in their musical journey IN the area of SHARING...coupled with trust. Also a lot of this area can be dogged by sharing, then developing EGOS....some say egos should be left at the door...i say, DON'T ALLOW THEM TO DEVELOP IN THE FIRST PLACE..and recognise gifts in collaborators and allow them to flourish when working with them. SHARING opens doors...HISTORY PROVES MY POINTS. Regards to all, Good luck to all Songwriters, Artists and Management Companies. Sonic Foxx, SONIC FOXX MUSIC.

Let me say this. And hopefully you understand it is just ONE person's perspective, one somewhat-humble human. I am a lifelong musician. 25+ years practicing my instruments. Classical piano, rock and blues guitar, harmonica, singing covers, playing other people's compositions and music. But every now and then, over the years, I've written my own song (and writing much more lately). My own music and tracks, and sometimes even recorded them. And sometimes shared them. And *my view (only me)* is that there is about 100x more difficulty and respect in writing AND performing your own music than simply performing (or tweaking someone else's song). It's just so, so much harder to both write AND perform the music. It takes SO much more from inside of you, compared to simply performing a piece of music you've been handed. This isn't HATE on performers... like I just said, I've got 25 freakin' years as one. It's mostly that I would like it, if musicians who wrote and performed their OWN work got the lion's share of the credit, but I can understand why a pop song written by a team of 3 people, sung by a global performance-focused superstar, produced by a team of lifetime sound engineers and backed by major-label publicity and advertising... well it's not meant as HATE to say I wish this type of competition wasn't so hard to fight through XD But I mean, really... isn't there just more "personality" in the music written and performed and produced by a smaller team, or a single artist? Kind of like a strong single-malt scotch. not to everyone's taste, but can't deny it's got flavor and a sense of coming from a unique place tl;dr: i dont know

Yeah, I mostly agree for my tastes but I guess pop could be seen more like a hollywood movie, where there's a script writer, director, and then actor who brings it to life. Like Hollywood, it can be incredible or absolute trash. Anyways, if you're unfamiliar, check out Tame Impala. Every instrument, lyric, vocal, and even the mixing (latest album) is done by one person and he's crossed over into the mainstream with some really unique production, catchy melodies, and great lyrics. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnfTpadteMalncU

Being humble, listening, and being willing to combine ideas is a HUGE part of collaboration. And to those who are being all poopy about pop songwriters, or about them not singing their own songs, go be a downer somewhere else. It's tough to write a hit song, and some people want to write music but not deal with the performance side of things. Also, if you want to eat, you make things with commercialability to pitch to labels, and write the other things that mean more to you personally for yourself or smaller artists. Songwriting is an art, regardless.

It would've been cool to add some older songwriters to this meeting to compare songwriting across the decades. Someone along the lines of Paul McCartney, Billy Joel and Elton John, but since they're extremely popular musical acts, it might be a bit hard to arrange for a CBS morning news station. Edit: also a classical composer

A lot of artist's do write their own material but they dont make the record because it's not a hit. And that's fine. Popstars have love for the music or they wouldn't do it. Plus a lot of popstars play instruments too. That doesnt mean they arent talented. A lot of the biggest songs are written by a group of people in a room. Not just one person. Spread positivity, these vocalists are very talented and don't get enough credit.

Since I was a tween I hear original music (full band) and lyrics, that come at ANY time of day doing unrelated things...these song and lyrics come instantly in large “stanzas” ... then they are filed away in my mind like a Rolodex and is a constant working puzzle I go back and play around with when I’m doing things that are mundane like washing dishes or taking shower or riding/driving. I’ve written full albums but no one has heard any of it because it’s just a game I play with myself to cope (I had a rough childhood) and don’t think anyone would be interested as I can’t really sing well IMO and just doodle around with a guitar. For a while I’ve called the place the music comes from “the hollow” just to call it something. Idk what this is, but recently learning how John Williams and other composers write (it is basically math to them, they don’t “hear” anything before they write it) I’ve started to realize how weird this is, kinda worried I have some sort of mental disorder... I’ve never talked to anyone about it. Note: recently found that weed only enhances it, like instead of standing outside of a club hearing the band play (you can hear melody and make out some lyrics in a semi-clear muffled way) weed opens the front door and I can hear more of the same but more well-defined details. Anyone else??

What's wrong with helping eople by writing the songs that others will sing? What about artists who write, and give their songs to other people to sing? So basically, I feel like you guys are saying that if you don't write your own music, you're not a "true artist". Some people may not have the gift or talent for songwriting. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. So what? Yes, I like when people write their own usic, but not everyone may know how or have the skills. Just like some eople can play several instruments, while others just sing. This is bad as calling the musician not a true artist because they on't sing, and vice versa. Come on, guys.I personally found this whole thing very exciting and intriguing. I would love to be a fly on the wall in whatever room they ork in, just to hear the whole process! I would love to write my own songs, but my poetry always comes out wrong. So what? Am I less of a singer because I can't write poems to fit the melodies in my head? I'm using that as an example, not to pull this long post onto myself.I didn't think any one of those songwriters pulled attention onto themselves. Maybe those personal conversations really do happen in there. We're not there, we don't know. And to say that no one will remember a song is making a tremenou assumption, in my opinion, because what if somebody does remember? Always and never lie.

Would you put a cover band or artist in the same league as an artist who sings their own songs? If you're singing someone else's words, or playing someone else's music, you are essentially just a cover singer. Nothing wrong with that, unless you're earning millions and pretending otherwise. Let's take a closer look at the issue. Most labels, especially majors have teams of writers (in or out-house). They all want to write for a big artist, why? Because it gets air play and stage play, ie royalties. That leads to three issues: 1) big artists also want some of that steady income, and have clout in the company, therefore songwriters can be forced to add creative credit on to a song by artists, managers etc; 2) Writers write for the big artists: if you know something works for an artist you emulate it, in the hope that that artist, or another big one, will buy it. This kills creativity in the pop industry by homogenising it; 3) Smaller artists get royally destroyed if they are not creators: every label, even a major, has limited resources. Big artists eat those resources, especially now, as labels are more likely to go for a certain hit from an established artist, as it is a concrete return on investment at a precarious time for the industry. As a result, smaller or new artists have to wait for resources to become available for a release. That includes melodies, lyrics and arrangements, and means either waiting for the writing team to get around to the nacent artist, or them taking the scraps left by the big-name artists. Fledgling, non-creative artists therefore have a stark choice: try the less-certain songs, which may work out, or sit and stagnate while hoping the label invests in you at some point. So what's wrong with people just singing stuff written by others? Well, quite a lot really.

It's a shame anyone can use auto tune, and make them self sound good, but It's even easier when you don't even have to write the song.

Don't be so ignorant. Autotune can't fix a bad bad performance and make 'anyone a singer' at all. (trust me I've tried). And anyway, most huge artists at least co write their songs. Especially right now.

The few pop artists that write most of their music but still write with professional song writers are Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Taylor swift, Charli puth, Nick Jonas and shawn Mendes and Meghan trainor oh and Demi lavoto... Keep in mind I only listed the pop category so don't @ me saying I forgot an artist that isn't even pop. But yeah those artists don't really need songwriters but sometimes they write with them to kind of bounce ideas... Then u have the so called"artists" who only contribute about 25 to 35 percent to get some writing credit but without the song writers they wouldn't be able to write songs alone like the artists I listed above.. there's a definite divide in the pop world of pop stars who are just the voice and image vs pop stars who are also creators writers and composers

nobody knows the process of making these songs, I came here from interview with selena gomez on apple where she speaks about her new album, she mentioned that brought the lines from her own diary and asked to Justin Tranter to make songs for her and then he transformed it into hits... but under her video on youtube there is no mention about him,she paid for this so she is the owner... But the interview is the key, real songwriters know why used such words in certain phrase, what did he mean on that time. But "the owner/ searching the word to descible simple feelings like how do you feel.

sure its not bohemian rhapsody but honestly think for a moment if this was something so dumb and easy surely anyone can write a hit song that is definitely not the case. but to be real musical IQ of the people have progressively degraded so much ever since the dawn of grunge (circa nirvana early 90s)
@bassinblue
@bassinblue 6 жыл бұрын
Grunge was interesting, but nothing groundbreaking in my opinion. Cool tunes here and there, but mediocrity everywhere. 'Smells like Teen Spirit' isn't a great song, but has a great vibe. Lyrics are meaningless and chords are predictable, but I guess Kurt was a 'genius' because he made everyone think he was a musician.

So much time has passed. But you are just the same. Perhaps only more beautiful. Perhaps a bit more mature. I had so much to tell you. But now that you're standing here. I'm lost for words. God how do I tell her that. I hope she understand . I hope she finally learns. You were my great love. I used to draw your portrait. You were beyond my grasp. You were beyond my grasp. You were the epitome of beauty. This is how I painted you and I hid you somewhere at the bottom of my heart . I'm still thinking about you...

This is why pop music is the industry dominant: Because if the pop stars were left to write their own music, it would be a failure (undisciplined culture) leaving the industry exposed to natural selection (those who are more disciplined and passionate whom actually write good and involved material such as what metal artists do, yet rarely get the recognition for it because of the industry of pop hacks). If this wasn't a world of labels hiring boomers to do the hard work for the spoiled pop stars, many more people would be listening to quality song writing by those with more intelligence and integrity, and helping to raise the IQ of the general public.

It is way worth living, when we love each other. We all have weaknesses, but together we are stronger. I know life aint perfect, but we can make it better we can live it better,we can leave it better No matter how hard your lives can sometimes be There'll still be room for joy -- if we still can meet Whatever the hardships you might be going through . There'll surely be someone waiting to walk you through Chorus If you uncovered you were the one man alive in the world the one man alive in the world The end of the world everybody's gone and you are alone alone in the world .... what you'd do ...., tell me who you d be ..... tell me where you'd go to Verse 2 Family and friends, the greatest gift in life love and value then, while they still alive cause one minute they here, they next they disappear now is the time, don't wait for next year fear made you leave, you missed the end of the war nostalgic , you come back, but it's the end of the world you wanted to save your life, now you re the only alive what your life will now be , if on earth your the only one to be Chorus If you uncovered you were the one man alive in the world the one man alive in the world The end of the world everybody's gone and you are alone alone in the world .... what you'd do ...., tell me who you d be ..... tell me where you'd go to Outro If you uncovered you were the one man alive in the world the one man alive in the world Would you go on would you go on
