ABOUT BENNY
Hi I'm Benny. My passion for music and creativity stretches across multiple disciplines and art-forms. I am a founding member and songwriter / lap-slide guitarist for one of Australia's best and most bearded country-bluegrass-folk bands, THE GREEN MOHAIR SUITS. To date the Mohairs have released 4 full-length albums and tour both nationally and overseas.
I am also the Founder and Head Producer of SILAMOR STUDIOS, a boutique studio specialising in Composition for Film, TV and Interactive Media. I write extensively across various instrumental and lyric-based genres and has been commissioned for major projects by Adobe, Cathay Pacific and Audible. I currently release original songs under the name SILAMOR.
I am also passionate about education and have taught song and lyric writing as well as film composition for JMC Academy, Collarts and the Australian Institute of Music. I design and regularly facilitate workshops on creative process and innovation.

Dynamics are part of natural human speech. Dynamics help the listener believe that the performer is honestly expressing their emotions.

I remember this being hammered home when I first learned Zombie by the Cranberries (RIP Dolores). Thank you for this reminder. Love your lessons! ❤

I love these lessons. I say "lessons", but it also feels like story telling... very entertaining at the same time. I SO look forward to these.

Was it Tedeschi Trucks at the festival? They can get down to a whisper and bring it back up to a freight train.

Varying the dynamics throughout the song is a great technique, but an alternative that can be very powerful occasionally is songs that start low and continue to build for the entire song. Take for example “White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane. It just continually builds, and it's a great energizing feeling,

Yes! It seems these days the standard approach to handling dynamics (or at least perceived dynamics) is with arrangement (adding/removing additional instruments from various song sections) or with mixing techniques (e.g. riding the fader, adding saturation, etc.). But for simple stripped down recordings or live performance dynamic playing/singing is key. Though it can be tough on stage if your monitoring is weak and you can't hear very well. The inclination is to just play *loud*. :P

Dynamics & vocal octave changes were Guns & Roses' secret ingredients for their first album not just their attitude & two separate but complementary guitar arrangements to name a few other advantages. Agree 1000% except for perhaps more meditative or hypnotically-oriented music a la Philip Glass or perhaps music say intended for dancing or to spotlight dancers not the music itself.

Great stuff, as usual! One thing I'd add is that the fretting hand can also contribute to dynamics. In the "Save Tonight" example, you could play all the verses with barre chords and use fret-hand muting (in addition to, or instead of palm muting) to create a quieter feel, then up the intensity with open-string chords ringing out during the chorus. Thanks for another fantastic video!

injury? after watching a shaolin monk break stone with his fingers years ago, I started abusing my fingers to the threshold of injury with guitar techniques i wouldn't have previously considered. Using a pick now is rare. otherwise, great info Ben.
