Could you do a song tutorial on closer to the sun by slightly stupid, or do I have to be a member of your website in order for you to take a song suggestion seriously

At Yusef Islam's 2016 tour, he did a little walk down memory lane playing songs that influenced him as a child and young person by Sam Cook and others and then said. "But then I found that it was easier to write my own songs." I found that to be VERY moving. i had a hard time writing for English class, but when I traveled as a young person and wanted to describe it to my family; when I had something to say, I really enjoyed writing. I struggled miserably with traditional piano lessons, but when a friend sat down with me and no sheet music and taught me duets, it was bliss. Thank you for everything you do, Justin. Thank you so much.

The hard part isn’t writing it but making it sound actually good

In terms of first attempt hits… I’m not sure if Psycho Killer was the first song David Byrne ever wrote, but it was certainly one of his earliest. I remember him saying he wrote it to see if he could write a song. (I agree that it’s very uncommon!)

Hi Justin. I was watching a film tonight on Netflix called "45 Years" starring Tom Courtney and Charlotte Rampling. There's a scene set in a coffee shop where one of the actors says he's starting playing ukulele which he's been learning from your website. Kinda cool that you've got a mention in an actual film....and a very good film at that. I'm guessing you already know this but thought I'd let you know just in case. 👍

I may have missed it, but I don't remember an actual example of a bridge. Fun lesson, thanks.

The 1st minute of We Came as Strangers - Strangers give me Savage Garden vibes with a bit of that psych rock that Aussies love. All in all a good vibe!

I write/perform/produce songs for free online songwriting community challenges like Songfight and Spintunes. It’s really helpful to have deadlines and specific challenges/titles as a starting point, and then there’s the invaluable bonus of the other people who submit listening to and giving impartial feedback on your songs. Getting your own friends and family to even listen to your songs can be like trying to wash a cat. I highly recommend finding communities like these (there are many more around on top of the ones I’ve mentioned) to anyone interested in writing songs.

Hey, Justin! Tks for your advices. I"ve recently writteng a song, including the lyrics and sent to a friend who knows how to sing.. I've also got melodies without words and vice-versa... I checked your band and it looks like you haven't been doing new songs, but I liked the ones I heard!! See you!!

Thanks for this video, was great information. I am trying to prepare for some open mic's, my big problem is finding someone that can give me honest feed back, with my original songs and my cover performances. Most people that are close to me, are just going to say it is good, even if it is not.

Great video Justin! I'm new to songwriting and have about 14 under my belt so far. They are all horrible, but the process is getting better.

didnt know where else to post this but I think you should do a video writing a song with ChatGPT. It would be interesting. I just did it and it can help so much with creativity. Would make for an interesting video like that dice rolling one!

There are many hit songs that often remind me of nursery rhymes from way back in kindergarten, as in: "Baa baa black sheep have you any wool, 🎶 Yes sir yes sir three bags full" 🎵 or "Twinkle twinkle little star 🎵, how I wonder what you are 🎶" etc, etc, 😅
