It's actually crazy how hard Amy was built up in SA1, 2, and 06 as a stealth-focused character, she's even somehow directly involved in a prison break in all 3 games Yet they never actually pulled the trigger on giving her real stealth platforming gameplay, a damn shame

I think that was supposed to be the idea with running from Zero in SA1. It just totally failed to execute that idea. This too. And yeah, her sneaking around Prison Island in SA2 as well. I think that sort of gameplay would be perfect for Amy. Sneaking around to get stuff done to get around her weakness. Not in a ninja, take everyone down from the shadows, kinda way. But a, I'm in a dangerous place and really don't want to get caught, kinda way.

@@Pariah6950 Zero was supposed to be more of a survival horror thing, and that makes sense for Amy's character in SA1 considering that game was about her eventually learning to become self-sufficient so that she could earn Sonic's love rather than be the dedicated damsel in distress- it just didn't pull that off well Amy also ends up in several situations in SA2 where she would have to evade detection, such as running from GUN with Tails, or when she's left alone on the ARK, though those would be more about general avoidance of regular enemies, rather than having to randomly run away from the kool-aid man who automatically detects you as a lame setpiece It's genuinely a missed opportunity, Amy becoming essentially a Splinter Cell character as part of a journey to self-actualization is really cool, and would in my opinion work better than the similar arc that Tails got since it would also add something unique to the world and prevent Amy from turning into the essentially soulless husk she is today

@@Pariah6950 That's an interesting idea. But I've always thought of Rouge as a more stealthy character. Her gameplay may be more treasure hunting like Knuckles but she's supposed to be a spy too. I guess you could have Rouge be about not alerting the danger and Amy be about straight up running away from it. Maybe add some unique tricks up their sleeve for dealing with different scenarios too.🤔

Amy wasn't built up as a stealth-focused character... There's only one gameplay sequence in SA1 where she "can'" hide from Zero at all and in SA2 there's one scene where she sneaks into the prison... It's definitely incidental and not meant to be more than that when put next to this invisibility mechanic.

Amy's Invisibility is most likely a result of her already-established roots in mysticism. Tarot cards, dowsing, Sensing Sonic's location wherever he goes, summoning a magical hammer... Invisibility is just another magic thing in Amy's arsenal.

Tarot shit is legit day 1 Amy lore from the Japanese canon that just happens to be an obscure trivia fact most of the time. Chronicles didn’t pull it out of nowhere and Pariah actually brings this tidbit up in an earlier vid

@@markofthewolvessucks8930 it was never specified iirc, i don't think sega or microsoft put up an announcement for it, and it's only available on the 360 (no backwards compatibility) so it was probably put up as an accident somehow, so i don't think it'll be up for too much longer

Through your entire review, you make very clear what is a mod fix and what the original felt like without the mods. I felt that was fair, because this is sonic 0 fucking 6! You already gave this game way more praise than it deserves. And I love this game, I love the pure ambition and old school Sega love that the developers put in, even with all the constraints and crunch that they dealt with. But it is bad. No need to defend yourself against dorks

Was this supposed to be Espio or something?" Funny you mention that actually, because a year after this game, Sonic Rivals 2 was released. In that game, the main four player characters from the first game gets a partner for their story modes. And Silver's partner character in Rivals 2... is Espio. As in, the dude who actually CAN turn invisible.

I 100% agree with your notion that game discourse should default to the best reasonably possible experience today, retrospectives are just historical curio. This is also why game preservation matters. I often see resistance to this for 06, but almost never for other games be it widescreen mods, Dreamcast restoration mods, fixes for modern PCs or operating systems, etc. So there seems to be an ulterior motive.

@right_in_the_tockles No this miscommunication came from a disagreement as to what the default for game discussion should be. He didn't explicitly specify whether it was a retrospective, and so commenters incorrectly assumed it was, despite him spending the whole series playing games in widescreen and with quality of life mods and patches. It really shouldn't have had to have been said at all with all the context clues available.

​@right_in_the_tockles No you're misreading my comment. I'm not for or against retrospectives, I don't care about that. I'm against the audience expectation that all reviews of old games should be assumed to be retrospectives by default. Retrospectives are a historical niche curio not the default way to discuss videogames. People watching a video about a game today should assume that it's talking about the game today, not in retrospect, unless stated otherwise. And it's especially, obviously not a retrospective if it's recommending the best mods and patches for playing it today.

You're playing the version of the game the developers would've given us if given 4 more months of development. But still, even though unfinished, I love what they've managed to do this far. I hope Sega can finally shake off this little bit of dust and get back to making games worth remembering.

My first time playing as Silver, I tried using his powers to get through stages faster. It wasn't bad at first, but there were some places were I got turned around and ended up going the wrong way. When I eventually played it again, I forced myself to take my time and pay attention to what I was doing. Only after trial and error did I get any fun from it later.

You wonder about Silver's extended hover and Sonic's special meter not draining, and how those slipped through testing- but they didn't. The prevailing story with Sonic 06 is that it wasn't finished, and the released retail build is as far as SonicTeam got before SEGA rushed it out. But in reality, the game WAS very close to being finished, and the Xbox Live Arcade demo proves that this is the case. Once SonicTeam received their 360 devkits 80-85% of the way through development, they realized that their game was far too ambitious to be able to run smoothly on the hardware, they had overshot the specs. So what they did to save time, was to use an older, more stable build that kept a mostly consistent frame rate and never crashed. So more finished full builds of this game DO exist, but are simply lost media. Though... if today's relisting of the game on Xbox marketplace for 360 is anything to go off of, it's possible that the closest-to-finished build that SonicTeam first tried on the devkit before having a collective panic attack, COULD surface someday, like all those cool ass Sonic Xtreme assets that were eventually uploaded to Chris Senn's blog.

That first five minutes was a ride. This is for sure a style of a review, and it sets yours apart from a common review template. That's worth something to a game that's been heavily combed over by the masses. Play the optimized versions whenever you can and as you like.

There are plenty of levels I enjoy S-ranking, even for Silver, (Sand Oasis, Tropical Jungle, Radical Train Wave Ocean, etc) but you seriously CANNOT get hit in the latter part of levels. Mastering this game and it’s functions is fun, but when unfair jank/hit boxes cause you to lose the S-rank…

hey this comment isnt rly about the video, but i just wanted to let you know that i love your vocal delivery. in a lot of these long-form video essays, if the creator doesnt make a script, it usually ends up sounding unprofessional, with lots of "um"s, and disorganized when they have to keep adding info later that they forgot to mention. if the creator makes a script, the read-back ends up sounding stilted, monotone or over-the-top. and i dont recall if youve ever mentioned which method you use, full script or otherwise, but your delivery is casual and flawless. you seamlessly flow from one topic to another, and it sounds natural, like we're just old friends chatting about sonic. just wanted to let you know how much i appreciate your delivery. 🙂

Focusight is a long time RTA runner for Silver and he does have a lot of tech for his 180 gold medal run. The one you describe on levitation dash is called levitation extension. Silver is my favorite hedgehog out of all three. His run is three years ago now.

Sega mandated DLC because I believe, in part, they wanted to sweep the whole 06 debacle under the rug as quickly as possible, and cash out before moving on. However, the interesting thing I read somewhere is that the developers were forbidden from applying fixes and patches to the base game.. so they snuck them in for the DLC packs. I can't find the source anymore but it mentioned some miscellaneous ability and physics tweaks, as well as the level designs themselves being adjusted to accommodate for the strategies that players have found until that point.

The Nero (DMC4) of the Sonic series. A "next gen" gimmick character with unique movement and combat but still very neat. Both have campaigns which take their gimmicks a bit too far, but nice overall to the point they should return but only Nero got that lucky - both through DmC which had some functions without the physics and great feel and DMC5 which also lost the physics. Silver's Electric Wind Dash Fist looks crazy fun and almost makes me want to play despite being on PS3. On playing for score, if they had a more PlatinumGames approach in the sense that they score you on segments or at least clue you in to when you hit the time or score thresholds, it would be more acceptable but still a balancing nightmare since few encounters are really "forced" and there aren't enough varied ways to express yourself which are more valuable than movement. DMC hits an interesting balance for speedruns since you need to get a good score to get a good reward to get better upgrades which gives you better pace, but Sonic doesn't implement its currency into the experience nearly as much as any 3D Ninja Gaiden or DMC game. It also doesn't help that Rings can be lost during regular play.

Jank-aside, I too think 06 can be enjoyable for its level design. Silver’s Kingdom Valley? There are so many skips you can take by abusing Silver’s hover, and it’s satisfying! You can get creative by levitating on debris! Sonic’s Sand Oasis & Tropical Jungle?? Some of the best Adventure-styled levels in the game. These levels are full of short cuts, goodies, and reward the Classic fan’s knowledge. Shadow’s Wave Ocean, I like mastering Omega’s section, then burrowing through enemies on the beach as Shadow. I always got the sense that Amy's invisibility, as well as Tails's dummy ring bombs, were essentially debug abilities they gave to characters they didn't have time to complete the movesets of properly.

Of all the gameplay of Sonic 06 I have ever seen, very little of it contains basic power ups, which makes holding unto R*ngs seem like a complete nightmare

Really late to this video and not sure if you'll ever see this (plus it's going to be kinda long). Played Battle R with a friend recently and that made me want to go back and max rank all Sonic games, which is how I found your channel with your video on the best way to play all of them. Have been enjoying listening to your perspective on the different games because I never really talked about sonic with anyone at all. Now sonic 06 is my personal favourite and most played so it's the first I returned to and I am running through the original and project 06 (haven't done shadow again on either yet). And while sonic feels a lot more fluid on P06, which makes him a lot more fun to play (I tend not to use gems when playing this game), Silver for me personally plays better on the original. I'll get to why I'm typing this out in a second but, the jank of his psychokenesis makes it satisfying when things actually go your way in my opinion. But the best part of playing silver, is that if you feel like it, you can make him the fastest character in the game using a mechanic that shouldn't exist. If you go back to 06 at any point, try and use psychokenesis to levitate an object you or standing on at an angle then throw it. I'm not explaining this the best, but if done right, you fling the object but stay standing on it and can basically skip whole levels with it. It's really fun to do the first couple of times and provides you with a really good time bonus when done correctly which can minimise the time spent fighting. Although it does still get stale after getting used to it and using it extensively. Also, really happy that you found more enjoyment in playing it with mods and people who have an issue with that are probably just the type to want everyone to not enjoy/hate what they don't enjoy/hate. I'm sure a good chunk of people are really happy that you put these out and if you enjoy doing it, then there really isn't anything wrong here.

Re: Amy's sudden superpowers and it probably being an extension of the mysticism part of her character... I feel like you could do a similar thing with some kind of item, like give her something that "wards off evil" to protect her instead of having her just capable of turning invisible for no reason. Magic stuff isn't all that out there for the series setting and it'd make a lot more sense imo. Anyway, always nice to hear another take on this game, especially from the position of someone playing it modded. My computer would probably kill itself if I tried running it on an emulator so I've only got the PS3 version. I have a lot of tolerance for Sonic Bullshit, but 06 really pushes it, and Silver's campaign is sort of my defacto favourite because it's the only one that doesn't put you through outright broken sections like mach speed is half the time and the fucking hover vehicle in Shadow's kingdom valley...

If not for you mentioning mods to fix the game, console gamers like me wouldn't know about the possibility. It's nice to know that the capability is there. ...Not that my ancient PC could handle the game anyway, but it's still nice to know that fixes exist. I previously only knew about the fan remake that isn't finished yet.

I mean I agree with what you said, but the title specifically says "was ALWAYS good", so you really cannot make the argument that you don't mean how they came out and are exclusively talking about the game right now with mods and stuff. Always implies that it was good even when it came out.

I know this is a late comment but I 100% agree with the misery of S ranking/100%ing this game. For me S ranking the base stages and the town missions was already agonising and tiring enough let alone both DLCs. I gave up after just that. Props to you for going the full mile because i 100% understand why you fucking hated 100%ing the game

Given Amy's unique animations for the invisibility and the lines about it in all versions of the manual, it suggest that it was very much intentional, which leads me to believe it was Sonic Team leaning in to the whole mysticism element of the character. That's something they were doing more and more since SA2 and Heroes. In 06 itself, Amy's hammer even uses the same pink energy effect for when her hammer disappears. Amy's SA1 gameplay had stealth element to them, so I guess they were trying to iterate on that. It's a shame she plays so poor though. Her hammer vault and the like her great additions in SA1. I feel like Silver could have used a mechanic where he could use his psychokenisis to move faster at the cost of meter. That would have helped his moving from point A to B. A thing with Silver's levels is I found myself getting lost quite a number of times. While I can get people having apprehensions over your use of mods, I felt you did a more than adequate job highlighting the issue in context of the base game while simply presenting the option of mods where applicable. I dont see the issue. Looking forward to part 3!

I'm sure the magic stuff is probably the deal with the invisibility. But I don't like that idea. It's the same thing as her becoming an action hero. Her interest in magic really just seemed like a hobby initially. You know, she's a young girl so she's in to horoscopes and stuff like that. I think that was the idea. Turning that into magic powers is weird and wrong for the character, imo. But at this point in the series, they clearly stopped caring about stuff like that lol.

I also remember her hammer being referedntonas a "Magical Hammer" in Sonic The Fighters. Going through the Adventure games, it's clear they wanted to push Amy more as a proper adventurer. Even independant of Heroes wanting everyone playable. I would say it's very Magical girl/Disney princess-esque in how it is utilized with the characater, but given she was being pushed more as a proper heroine going in with SA1 onward, I think it makes sense as a direction for the character and works thematically. Unfortunately, this is the last game were this is reaaally explored all that much since she goes to being an NPC going forward. Dunno if I would call it magic in the sense of sorcery necessarily though. Not after much deliberation. "Thoughts into power" and "Power of the Heart" are recurring aspectz of the series, so I interpret it in 06 as an extension of her believing she wont be seen manifesting in her actually turning invisible. While pretty consistently utilized, Amy's fixation with wishes, dreams and faith is an aspect of the character that seems to fly over a lot of peoples heads. It also just occurred to me that in talking about 06 and Blaze, we are gonna have to hear about your thoughts on the whole 06 Blaze situation. That's gonna be interesting.

I see what you're saying. That could work, I guess. Amy learning that she actually has some real magical affinity of some kind. If you want to make Amy more capable, it's not a bad way to do it. But even then, it was only ever in the background. That would need some real story moments of her discovering her abilities for that to work. I'm gonna save the Blaze can of worms for when I get to Rush. There's already enough problems to talk about in this game's story. But you can probably guess what I'm gonna say about it.

I'm surprised that you didn't choose sonic p-06 for the improved version you wanted to play. If you haven't heard of p-06, it's a fanmade unity remake of Sonic 06, where 99% of the bugs are gone. You can barely see the difference between the original version and p-06. Silver has faster max speed with a custom running animation where he hovers in the air, and he has a ton of other improvements. Sonic runs faster, and has a faster max speed, where he uses the mach-speed animations. His spindash is way better, and the gem energy meter works, and there's in game Super Sonic. Shadow also has all of the improvements that Sonic has, along with improved vehicles, and chaos powers. It also adds combos for defeating enemies like in Sonic Adventure 2, momentum physics, better loading times, less lag, custom level intro cutscenes, ect. It is unarguably the best version of 06!

Did you had a mod for Silver's throwing ability? Casue I remember it was impossible to throw enemies toward other enemies in my playthrough, they always died before hitting my target, but in your gameplay it looked automatic, you didn't even had to throw, you moved them around the they chased the other enemies hitting them, also in my playthrough the autoaim of Silver wasn't that consistent as it does in your gameplay, half of my throw objects didn't hit anything even if my enemy was right in front of me, that makes a lot of difference for how much the combat system is enjoyable. Maybe I was just bad at the game but it looks was different in your modded version.

I can't get behind that perspective that using mods invalidates the review. What, because its unofficial? If Sonic 06 got an official remaster, guaranteed they'd fix a lot of the problems fans fixed with mods. Is it invalidated because these fixes are unofficial? By that logic, a review of Sonic 3 with 16:9 using Sonic 3 A.I.R. would be an invalid review of Sonic 3, but in a month when Sonic Origins comes out, a review of *that* release in 16:9 would be perfectly acceptable? Weird to me.

I think it's unfair to compare the ranking system in this game to the one in SA2, mainly because of a few key differences. The time bonus is a large portion of your final score in these games, so I disagree that the ranking system makes the level take significantly longer. While it's true that you do need to consciously go for other sources of points, the very nature of what gives you points in SA2 encourages you to play the speed stages in the most fun, flashiest way possible. It's not enough to just book it for the goal-- just as important is that you pull off tricks (which in most cases DO make you reach to goal faster) as well as chain together homing attacks for bonus points, and light speed dash through rings (another huge difference between SA2 and 06 is the ring bonus-- in SA2 the points you get for simply picking up rings matters more to your overall score than actually having rings at the end of the level.) An 'A' rank run through any sonic level in SA2 (City Escape, Metal Harbor, Green Forest, Final Rush, etc.) will be comparable speed to a run focused on reaching the end as quick as possible (barring any major skips and glitches), the main difference is the higher level of execution required (trick ramps in City Escape, good grinding in Final Rush, and reaching the top rocket handle or destroying fighter jets in Metal Harbor). They all have the same thing in common: play through the level fast while naturally accruing extra points by just being cool. I won't go too much into detail, but also believe the ranking system rewards fun, skilled play in the other two gameplay styles as well (though knuckles leans more towards just being familiar with the levels.) 06's ranking system fails so spectacularly BECAUSE it's different from SA2's; It doesn't encourage you to play the game in the way that it's the most fun like SA2 does, instead demanding that you slow to a crawl to engage in it's largely uninteresting combat for tens of minutes at a time, while at the same time the sheer length of it's levels actively discourages you from trying to get a higher rank, especially when you could lose it all 25 minutes in. Basically, after S ranking a level in 06 it makes you never want to play that level again. On the other hand, I replay SA2 levels casually just for fun, and almost always get an A rank just because the ranking system is designed to encourage the most fun way to play. And SA1's ranking system is just... there? In Sonic, Tails, Gamma, and Amy stages it's basically just "play the level the same way 3 times" as it's purely a time limit that isn't particularly hard to meet. Knuckles just becomes a little more tedious if you don't enjoy his gameplay already, and Big is... well, yeah. Anyways, Great video regardless! Sorry for the long spiel, I have quite a lot to say about SA2's ranking system-- IMO it's the best ranking system there's been in a sonic game.

@@Pariah6950 There's a lot of things in that video I agree on, such as weird button mapping, the misuse of abilities like the bounce, and an overall lack of polish. However, I disagree with the idea that you should be ranked only on your time. I think it's much better that the game rewards the player for interacting with all the smaller mechanics in a level to achieve a higher score. The reason I and many others love the ranking system so much is because it makes you play like Sonic, for lack of better words. Many people don't like Sonic as a character because he goes fast, it's because of his style, energy, and general attitude. To me, it seems very NOT sonic-like to ignore any and all opportunity to show off and be cool, and I would've been bored to death if every A rank was just "go fast" like it was in Sonic Adventure. I guess it just depends on what you want out of a sonic game. I personally can't see the point system as a downgrade in any way given the huge emphasis on the time bonus regardless, but other people just want to go fast. I prefer executing small challenges one after another.

@@Sneavile Huge emphasis on time bonus? Most of these games don't have that. The time bonus is pitiful in all these Adventure style games besides Shadow. In all the other ones, a run for an A or S rank can take about 2 or 3 times longer than I can complete levels if I go for speed. The reason I am against the scoring system is because, having played for both speed and score, I find trying to finish levels as quickly as possible waaaay more fun and challenging. The scoring system encourages a less fun style of play to me. I'd argue there are better ways to make players "play like Sonic". Have the design be such that doing stylish things speeds you up rather than slowing you down. The Rush games do that well. Killing enemies and doing tricks helps maintain your boost meter, letting you go faster. Also, SA1 doesn't have a ranking system.

I get that you don't want bosses in Sonic, but what if they were instead presented as their own stage? Even as there own act. What if they were in an act of their own, and you had to chase them through the level you were just in, and the faster you go the more hits you get in when they let their guard down? I think these 3D games especially games especially would benefit from not breaking the action.

I think bosses could be done well in Sonic. They have been a handful of times. But even then let me ask you, when you go back to a Sonic game you like, what do you do? Do you replay all the fun levels? Or do you refight the bosses? Personally, I have never felt the desire to fight the bosses after completing the story. They're just not what I want then I play these games.

As much as I dislike the base game. Going into the fan remaster, I see how this game could've been Adventure 3.

I have to say, i love your view on things like mods, because yes you can play the vanilla game but since the only way to play it is by emulation then why not just mod it? I like how you say when a mod fixes something and still saying the original problem For S ranking all the levels or 100% the game, when anyone brings this topic i just like to say: why do it? Like you obviously don't have to and the game doesn't push you to, the prize isnt even good most of the time so just don't do it. It still doesn't excuse the game having a shitty system but i was always a fan of playing a game until i either finish it or just have enough of it I also wished you talked about the models because its a famous argument and i think that these models are kinda fine to me, i like shadow's model espicially I was confused that after silver's campaign you started talking about 100% the game and stuff before shadow's playthrough because usually you do that at the end but it's fine since you did mention it at the end Finally, for the love of god just say RINGS or even COINS instead of censoring it or saying OUAWAYH. Normally I don't 100% any of these games, and I don't recommend it. I'm just doing it to be thorough and look at everything these games have to offer. That's why I always have a separate verdict for the game and the 100% experience. And yeah, I'm getting a little experimental with the format this time. A main campaing + another topic. Time attack for Sonic, 100% for Silver, and the "Adventure 3"ness will be for Shadow.

Yeah I can totally see you really hate scoring system in videogames in general lol Altough in Sonic 06 It's clear that Ranking system in Sonic games cannot work if the levels are too long, the main point of having these is that it incentivizes repeat playthroughs and gives more incentive for the player to improve It's skills, but if the stage takes more than 5 minutes to beat, it really starts to become frustranting these repetitiveness, which is why I think only Cosmic Wall from SA2 is the only level I feel annoyed when I don't get A-Rank given it takes more than 6 minutes even for a skilled player (even though the rank is quite generous in that level so not a big deal anyway). Like imagine if zelda games gave you ranks when you beat a dungeon and to get the last heart piece you'll have to play through the dungeon again... Would that be bad game design or just incentivizing the player to get better? Although this point about taking too long can be inconscistent because I like getting S Ranks in Resident Evil games, and these ranks are given for an ENTIRE playthrough which might take hours, so I'm not 100% sure why some games it can be annoying while others don't, and I don't think it comes up whether It's score based or time based (I think NiGHTS or hack 'n slash games works incredibly well with score based ranks), I can perfectly have fun with both styles so.... What do you think?

I think scoring systems are fine, in theory. They just need to be implemented in a way that makes the game more fun to play than not going for score at all. These Sonic games do not do that, in my opinion. They encourage a style of play that is less fun and less challenging than ignoring them. Plenty of action games, rhythm games or even some stealth games I've played do score just fine. I actually really love going for S ranks and stuff in a lot of games. Just not these. Ideally, to me ranking systems should encourage players to try to get as good at the game as possible. But these games don't really ask for that. Minus the *redacted* bonus, you can be as sloppy and slow as you want and still get the best rank if you just kill everything and hit a few rainbow rings and such. Just don't die. For Sonic, a series that has always encouraged time attack in its design, I find it baffling that time is not the criteria used to determine rank in most of these games. It results in levels that have mixed design that contradicts itself. There are shortcuts, but to get S ranks you can't take them. You have to ignore them so you can kill more stuff a lot of the time. Then in a game like Shadow where you can play for time, you just run past all of the enemies and challenges put there to get points because they mean nothing. It's so messed up. To me it's simple. Rank and design Sonic games solely for time. It encourages replays and improving far more than score, in a way that is much more inherently fun. The only time I think score actually worked in Sonic is the treasure hunting stages of SA2. Which ironically are based on time mostly.

@@Pariah6950 Interesting, I get what you're saying. I guess the way to go is having a level design where it's shortcuts gives just as many points as the slower route, so there is always benefit... Although I think that doesn't necessarily have to be case, you said that the combat is less challenging/fun, but if the game manages to have really fun combat, I would find kind weird for the focus not being on executing these combat challenges and just ignore them, that's because I don't really find that appealing to just skip through everything like in SA1 as if it were a linear path, I want to be incentivized and rewarded to collect stuff and find places to score more points and do sick tricks, which is what I think SA2 does and why I think it's more fun to do the lower/complicated route over just blazing through everything as fast as possible. I also really love the combat in Heroes for the same reason, most of the time I totally prefer to manually destroy the enemies over just using Team Blast and get over it much quicker, I find it more fun even if takes much longer. So that's why I totally understand why developers made these games that way even if it contradicts the main principles of Sonic. Each game tries to do something unique and some might find the decisions they made for it more fun and others don't, there are lots of ways to have fun and at least we can't complain about lack of variety because Sonic Team always changes the rules of everything in the franchise so... I'm looking forward to your review on the games that does rankings based only on time. [Also what I like about Treasure Hunting is that you can compensate time loss by scoring more points with objects in the levels, for example, "I'll take longer to find that emerald, but If I destroy those enemies and collect those item boxes that time loss will be compensated at the end", there is a lot of decision making which changes the way you progress and gives value to all the goodies of different areas of the level, instead of just having a pre-determined "faster path" and ignoring an entire other portion of the stage, but that only works because of it's open ended nature, so I don't think it would work in linear Sonic gameplay]

@@sanglish18 Personally, I don't think combat and time attack work together very well. Most of the best combat systems in games, mainly character action games, have combat where killing things quickly can be fairly easy and kinda lame. That's where scoring systems work. It gives you incentive to get experimental and creative with how you fight, which is a lot more fun than just fighting as efficiently as possible. That's why combat is something I don't really think should be in Sonic in general. But there are still ways to make it work for time. Locking doors behind groups of enemies and such. It's the enemies that are just standing around that you can just run past that don't work for time. But if the game was entirely designed for time, those wouldn't be there. It would be designed differently. A good inverted example would be Freedom Planet and Spark the Electric Jester. Both excellent Sonic inspired games, with really fun combat. But I don't enjoy time attacking those games, despite the fact that they are both designed for it. It's just not the more fun way to play because of how the games are.
