I like how this channel understands that sonic isn’t for everyone, I also enjoyed both of these Saturn era spin games.

Everyone so have opinions for the game itself. It not like “oH SkNic 3D Blast so Bad” and everyone agrees, some ppl do like the games (including me). If u want a rom hack where they fix the controller and such, yeah go ahead. But some ppl jus like the controller that they put in the first place cause it was fun. Beside, that was opinion is in the first place

9:21 The blue shield is actually the lightning shield, believe it or not. It protects you from electrical damage.

As a massive Saturn nerd, I don't think I'll ever get over how goddamn cool Sonic World and the 3D Blast special stages are. NO poly clipping, a consistent frame rate, the SPEED of the special stages- hell, the speed of those special stages alone convinces me SonicTeam absolutely could have done 3D Sonic themselves, especially given how well they pulled off NiGHTS into Dreams and Burning Rangers. If they had made NiGHTS and were ready to make a Sonic on the platform, and then teamed up with a few of the Team Andromeda guys who were sick of Panzer Dragoon and wanted to work on something else, I guarantee we would have gotten one bomb ass 3D Sonic. Sonic Xtreme on the other hand looks like it would have been shit and even worse to control than 3D Blast's normal stages.

At the very least, I'd love to see someone take the assets and use them as a base for a Saturn style fan game. That'd be sweet.

The few leaked builds we have are cool, but I'd love to finally find the Metal Blade/boss engine E3 demo along with the other stages that were shown at various points. I'm sure Chris Senn has released everything he has through his Senntient blog since he hasn't been under NDA from SEGA Technical Institute in like 25 years [unless his work on Sonic BOOM Rise of Lyric counts somehow], so maybe we should seek out some other developers. MOTHER 3 N64 is the Nintendo fan's 5th gen holy grail, Sonic Xtreme is the SEGA fan's. And also Self from NiGHTS but we've pretty much exhausted all leads in that department.

@@tivvy2vs21 The fish-eye-lens build, the most recognizable version of the game, was doing pretty well and almost ready to begin full playtesting. The NiGHTS engine one only lasted like 3 weeks before bitch ass naka threw a shit fit over SEGA using their own engine he had made FOR THEM under contract. Like the precursor to ken penders.

I unironically love Sonic 3D Blast. I love how all the levels have such a distinctive color scheme. The boss fights scale difficulty very well. And my GOD that soundtrack is amazing. Diamond Dust Zone is one of my favorite video game OSTs ever. You're right though, those special stages are way too easy. And the chaos emeralds look like cough drops. 😂 Nice video, man.

Been going through all of this series since the algorithm brought me your way, and I gotta say, I really love your focus on game feel and how the momentum works in each individual game. That’s a big part of what makes or breaks a sonic game for me (as well as the time attack aspect of course) and it’s good to hear the perspective of someone who *gets* them

3D Blast executes its concept very well in my opinion. Good enough controls, good level design that doesn't often throw you into difficult to manage situations, and fun bosses that actually feel threatening. And I think it's the only sonic game where the plot is first and foremost Sonic saving the animals from Robotnik. I know Sonic 1 and 2 had that plot, but the goals in those always seemed more on the 'Defeat Robotnik' side of things, 3D Blast you actually keep the animals with you until getting to the goal rings, and Panic Puppet act 1 has Sonic literally rescuing the Flickies from glass cages (obviously in preparation for turning into robots.) signifying that you are infiltrating Robotnik's factory.

3D Blast (PC version) was my childhood Sonic game and I liked it well enough but I would've LOVED Sonic Jam

I'm glad to see someone else thinks about how cool it would be if we got all these early low poly 3D sonic things together! I've always thought that would be so cool. I really enjoyed that cut straight from Jam into 3D Blast. Oh well at least we have Robo Blast.

I had the PC version of this game. It's like an even prettier version of the Saturn version, with yet another different Special Stage.

imagine if people were capable to mod Sonic 3d Blast on saturn and turned the special stages into a working game. Or Sonic Jam.

A better thing to do, would be to just try and recreate the saturn special stages 1:1 on a modern game engine like Unity.

This time frame will always be my favorite Sonic aesthetic. If I were a developer, I'd come up with a Sonic game based on these game aesthetics and Sonic CD's intro. What a vibe.

The Time Challenges defiantly help that aspect, it has you approach the levels differently and try to memorize the layouts from playing them over and over again. Rusty Ruins was defiantly the hardest and most frustrating ones to do (Because the stage in general is pretty much the worst in the game in my opinion). But all the other levels are pretty fun to do.

Well he isn't, but he is also looking at all these games from different perspectives on playing them, like not exactly going into 3D Blast with the mindset of the classic trilogy, because 3D Blast is fundamentally a spinoff title that shouldn't really be compared to those classic games due to the huge departure in gameplay and style, but rather as it's own little thing.

Sonic 3D Blast was never bad, I see americans complain about it all the time, but that's just because they don't understand that "diagonal press makes diagonal movement" so they decided the controls were bad and jumped on the media's "blue hedgehog bad" spiel like the independent thought-capable not-sheep that they are.

ive always like super sonic in the classic games, as he makes speedrunning the classic games much easier. i may be a good time attacker, but i cant do all those crazy skips all in one go. super sonic helps to make my runs more consistent

I heard in ftcr that the special stages are so easy cus tails and knuckles have two different sets of 7 levels and if you only do one of them for the run you can actually see some of the more challenging stages

Director's Cut would have been the best version...had it not messed with Sonic's movement speed, the color palettes, and the Flickies (not the radar). The inclusion of the timer was unnecessary, but thankfully it doesn't make you lose a life when it reaches 9:59. This is off topic, but it sounds like you're only interested in speedrunning and time attacking, and not the content found in these games.
