Personally I like Amy's gameplay style. The entire point of her playstyle is knowing the level design and really your doing the exact same thing as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, the only key difference is approaching obstacles differently. Amy also completely destroys every single boss in the game with ease. I just find it a bit offputting that people only write her off solely because she doesn't do what the other three can already do rather than view her as her own character with her own strengths and weaknesses. It really comes off as an inability to view past surface level complaints. Really Amy's only real problem for me is the lack of spin-dash can make getting to certain places annoying, but otherwise I adapt just fine with her. Any time I'd go back to play this game I'd just exclusively go to play Amy, only using Tails and Knuckles for Chaos emeralds or just for fun. It's funny because her playstyle is her Sonic Adventure playstyle in the 2D realm, but improved over what her Adventure gameplay lacked. You'd think people would give credit to that considering Amy's always put in a damned if she does or doesn't situation. If anything I find Sonic to be the worst character outside of first timers or people who want a more traditional experience. Otherwise there's no reason to use Sonic when Amy's versatile and handles bosses the best, and Tails/Knuckles have everything Sonic has but are just better. Sonic also suffers the worst at fighting bosses as they take longer to kill and has to resort to a much slower method when dealing with them, especially the Ice Mountain boss. Just for note I know you stated you liked her style and were stating the weaknesses, but I'm just giving my own perspective. As for Sonic Advance as a whole the game is good one of my personal favorite Sonic games, it's honestly the only Advance game I like as well.

Maybe Amy should have had that weird running thing that's on it can do in certain games when you hold up on the d-pad if he still allows me to move super fast but he doesn't do the spin dash so he's not invulnerable I never understood the point of it

17:45 You're not wrong at story detailing in sonic games. Those who say "story is not important" are the wrong ones. Story has literally been a big part of these games since Sonic CD. In sonic 1 and 2, stories were explained through the manuals. S3&K added context to almost everything you did, despite it having no dialogue which is why it has some of the best storytelling in games imo. Ever since 06, it seemed like people just decided to give up on storytelling in these games. Storytelling gives inspiration and context behind the level design. It makes you more determined to advance through the game. This is why Sony had the best single player games. I think you should do a video on why storytelling is important is these games cause it needs to be done more. Good video man, keep it up.

I don't agree about it being better than sonic mania, however I do think you might have a point of it making more sense as Sonic 4. It does add new mechanics and actually has new stages and characters adding amy. Sonic Mania is more like Generations 2 Classic , but done exceedingly better than Generations 1. I also don't think mania's team was attacking modern sonic by using his old design. They just chose what they liked and Iizuka probably wanted mania to have classic sonic as well so it could tie in with forces.

Mania just feels like Sonic 3 slightly updated with elements from Sonic 1/2 and CD whereas Sonic 4 feels like remakes of Sonic 1 and 2 so neither of these games in my opinion should be called and Sonic 4 and while I don't know enough about the Advance games to judge them yet they seem to be more of a Sonic 4 then anything else I've played

Sonic Advance is basically a Modern Classic Sonic Trilogy. Sonic 1/Sonic Advance - 1991/2001 Sonic 2/Sonic Advance 2 - 1992/2002 Sonic 3/Sonic Advance 3 - 1994/2004 They all even came out ten years apart.

Sonic Advance 1 was pretty good. Sonic Advance 2 was tedious and monotonous. Sonic Advance 3 was a lot of fun. The Sonic Advance trilogy is a flawed but solid trilogy of games.

I can definitely understand why you love Advance over Mania. Honestly, as much as I love Mania, I wish the Mania team used the modern design rather than the classic design. Thinking about it now, I don't see why they would stick with the classic design other than to please the older fans and make Mania as a good nostalgia trip and love letter for that specific group of people. Advance 1 on the other hand is an entirely original and new adventure that wasn't held back by nostalgia or having this need to please anybody. That, I miss a lot from what people call the "Dark Age" of Sonic. I want to see innovation in this series again.

Advance 1 is not "original" in the slightest, there aren't any new stage tropes, the art direction doesn't do anything memorable with the already existing ones and most of this game's ideas are watered down versions of what Sonic 3 & Knuckles already brought to the table. I'm not sure what are you on here, Mania has a lot of remade stages, but the new ones also have completely new settings to the series and are far more creative, both visual and level design-wise, than anything from Advance 1, 2 or 3.

@@fsdfdsdssadas9646 Actually, Advance 1 does have originality to it. Some of its levels like Secret Base, Egg Rocket and Cosmic Angel are pretty original stages in their own right. The game's ideas are further not "watered down versions of Sonic 3's", they're a combination of all the ideas of the Genesis classics while also adding its own twist to it. Even when it comes to the rest of its levels, there's still originality to them because of the aesthetics. Neo Green Hill Zone for example is basically the tropical island level trope but it starts off in a beach, then transitions to an area similar to the original Green Hill and then has you going through trees. Neo Green Hill Zone is one of those levels in Advance 1 that may fulfill one of the standard stage tropes in the Sonic series, but the aesthetics are given an updated look and the themes are experimented with in order to create something seemingly new. There's your originality right there. Likewise, I'm wondering what you're on about when saying Advance 1 is "not original in the slightest". That is a blatantly incorrect statement. *"Mania has a lot of remade stages, but the new ones also have completely new settings to the series and are far more creative, both visual and level design-wise, than anything from Advance 1, 2 or 3."* I strongly disagree. Mirage Saloon, Press Garden, Studiopolis and Titanic Monarch don't exactly have "new settings", they more so play around with the standard level themes in the Sonic series. Mirage Saloon is a combination of the desert and casino/carnival themes, Studiopolis also uses the casino/carnival theme and combines it with the urban theme, etc.... Advance 2's Music Plant and Techno Base and Advance 3's Route 99, Toy Kingdom and Cyber Track have a great amount of creativity to them compared to Mania's new levels. Advance 2's Techno Base (and Advance 3's Cyber Track) is especially creative because it deals with a rarely used level theme and that's the cyberspace theme. Then there's Music Plant which takes the casino/carnival theme and makes it about musical instruments. Once more, I disagree with a lot of what you're saying.

That means that I already acknowledged that it is a classic game because of its premise being that of a nostalgia trip. This was a pleasant surprise. Good review, I think this is a pretty underrated trilogy. Maybe a Sonic Advance remaster or Mega Collection would be neat and maybe implement the tag feature in Sonic Advance 1 and 2... but I am not sure if Sega could pull it off and this seems more of a fan project kind of thing.

Whilst I disagree that Advance is better than Mania, I can see where you’re coming from. I have fond memories playing the Advance games and I think they’re great successors to the original trilogy. Although to make the case for Mania, I think that game was more of a test to see people’s reception of classic 2D games and I think the next 2D games will start to become it’s own thing seperate from the mega drive games, especially after the founding of Evening Star.

I actually agree with you here. Even tho I wouldn't say it's better than Mania, the latter isn't better. Both are equal to me as the best 2D Sonic titles out there. The modern look (which is my personal favourite), new character moves, Amy & a awesome OST among other things truly shows what Sonic 4 could have been. My favorite stage is probably Secret Plant Act 1. The beginning set piece is one that's so unique and memorable. It really felt like I was acting for a spy movie with the floodlights and swinging into the main plant itself! Tho the other main highlight for me derived from Angel Island Act 2. Mecha Knuckles was such a cute boss fight which took the pitifully easy Knuckles clash and made it difficult yet fun! Note that the robot's disguise is actually based off of Knuckles' sprite limitations exclusive to his Sonic 3 NPC role. It's a sweet nod to a flaw of the Genesis & actually fooled some people. However, I started with Knuckles as he's my favorite Sonic character. It truly puzzled me until he shedded the skin. The second phase was kinda creepy with his homing missiles shooting out of his mouth...but it felt great to see Mecha Knuckles return from Sonic R in such a unique way! Also, one day you should review Sonic Advance Remastered once it's finished. It's a fan project which improves the original immensely! There's also many new features & completion rewards worthy of it's time.

Saying Advance is better than Mania feels like it's a pretty spicy take for the sake of spicy takes, but I do agree that people give the Advance trilogy a lot more shit than it deserves. I think the main problem with Mania is that it is totally caught up in the current moment of classic pandering and as such just modeled over half of it's levels off of preexisting Genesis levels as well as the classic style for all the characters. Sonic Advance, on the other hand, was simply a 2d platformer for a 2d system and rightfully emulated the aesthetic style of the main series at the time and it fits right in with the Adventure ports for Gamecube. Like you said in the video, this is probably what Yuji Naka- the actual creator of the original Sonic games -actually wanted the continuation to look and feel like. There was an obvious effort to keep the Sonic universe consistent across games regardless of system. (Granted, shortly after/during the release of these games came Heroes, Shadow, and eventually '06 which would turn Sonic into the clusterfuck of a franchise and fanbase, but in this moment it seemed promising.... sigh. Being a Sonic fan isn't easy.)

Sonic also has an air dash. If you jump and press a direction twice really fast he does a dash. The faster you are the faster the dash so you can gain alot of speed. Also it's nearly impossible on anything apart from the GBA SP as that has a flat clicky d-pad. DS...don't even bother and original GBA...it's doable.

I liked the bosses they are overall more complicated and fun to face than a lot of Sonic 2 boss fights where one could easily bounce on and on until Eggman is fleeing away Also the snow boss underwater and the final boss were pretty difficult, the first one if you prioritize getting air before attacking him is feasible but the last one was eating live after live

fun fact, the Sonic Mania dev team has nothing against the modern games. In fact, Christian Whitehead has said that they would be open to adding the newer characters (such as Shadow) if they had reason to do so.

Sonic Advance 1 to me captured the "classic essence" of Sonic: simple plot and easy to understand gameplay. I don't play this one as much anymore, but it's a decent game (I'll rank it as #2 on the Advance trilogy).

My quick thoughts on all four of these games you’ll be going over even though no one asked: - Sonic Advance 1 is awesome and one of my favorite Sonic games. It truly is Sonic 4, and even follows the formula of introducing a new and unique playable character. Bringing Amy in as one of the 4 is great as I’ve always felt she should’ve been one from the start. The only major negative is the special stages. - Sonic Advance 2 is alright. I didn’t like how they made Amy unloveable rather than simply adding Cream on as a 5th character. Like they can’t have more than one main female character in the cast at a time or something. Amy also lost her unique moveset. The special stages are really annoying to get and there are a lot more cheap deaths. - Sonic Battle. The gameplay was pretty bad in my opinion but I loved the story. And it introduced/set up one of my favorite Sonic characters, so that’s a plus. - Sonic Advance 3. A nice enough continuation of Sonic Battle’s story. I didn’t like the team mechanic as it more often than not feels like a hindrance than a bonus when you lose some of your moves due to who you chose as a partner. The special stages are still annoying to get, and they don’t add any new playable characters.

I think this was a pretty good review. Though I don't personally agree Advance 1 is better than Mania. Don't get me wrong, I think Advance 1 & Advance 3 are solid GBA Sonic titles. But tbh? Sonic Mania is just too amazing to me. No matter how much it's "not as much on originality" type of Sonic title. But yeah. I would say it probably is a Sonic 4 contender tbh. Even if not my fave. But I respect how good it is nonetheless

They were released at 2 different games cause they couldn’t fit them in one, so sega improvised. They are the same game regardless tho. No other sequel in any game series counts an add on as a sequel.

I can picture the Advance 2 review already. You go too fast, too many cheap deaths, etc. If I were to play the game nowdays, I would probably agree. But as a kid, I LOVED adventure 2. Even more than advance 1. I think kids are impressionable, and just like watching sonic go really, really fast. SEGA probably takes this very much into consideration when designing new games. But while I agree the game might not be as good now that I'm older, I will stand that the trick system is amazing, and should have been kept for every 2d sonic since. It allows you to turn your vertical momentum into horizontal, or gain extra hight to access new areas. Really fun stuff

The best way is emulation. Going through the effort of buying overpriced second hand GBA and original Sonic carts is not worth it since the money doesn't go to Sega, Nintendo or any of the creators. The day Nintendo and Sega decide to put it out officially in the west we buy it, until them it's their fault.
