The Japanese dialogue is so much clearer and easier to understand than the English dub it's almost painful. Also, Shadow and Sonic's rivalry makes more sense now.

hipten You misunderstood me. The English voices were good, but the translation was not. There were a lot of moments where things didn't quite make sense because of how bad the translation was. A bad translation doesn't mean the voices are bad. :)

It seems to me that each individual line was translated fairly well, but for some reason the context of the situation and how the lines relate to each other weren't considered. The result is a superficially-accurate translation that doesn't make sense.

Looking up Japanese again for how characters say "I". So... Sonic and Knuckles use "ore". Hoo boy. Giving credit to TV Tropes' research, it means, in general: " "I, a tough young person". It is used mainly by young men (from adolescence to around middle age, usually) in casual contexts, such as hanging out with friends." Which makes sense since Sonic and Knuckles are, like, sixteen and fifteen. But wait, there's more. Younger men may use it with strangers, while considered rude, but it happens. But if you use "Ore" in a formal situation, that's like saying "What's up, my dude?" to your boss. That's ascending the level of rudeness. Many shonen heroes use "Ore" in media, but nowadays, anyone that's a 'rough 'n tough go get em' hero --regardless of gender--use it in shows. (See: Ryuko Matoi) Fun fact: "Ore" was gender-neutral until the late Edo period where suddenly it had a male tone to it. Today, women usually use it are mostly in rural living areas with a Tohoku dialect. What's interesting about "ore" is that with Sonic, it fits. The guy is this flamboyant, peacock teen that screams 'URBAN CULTURE', like breakdancing and an (almost) absolute disregard to manners. He still uses "ore" in formal situations, I think, like meeting the President in Sonic X. Wow, and I thought he was rude in the English version. (Shadow: *shaking his head*) "Ore" also has a connotation with being a delinquent, but Sonic's a nice guy, so maybe they were going with a rebellios teen flair. For Knuckles, it's odd. He grew up on an island and had little interaction with society prior to Sonic 3, so I'd doubt in Japan he'd have no clue what meaning pronouns are. ("Atashi? Boku? Oira? What, I thought everyone used Watashi?" kind of confusion.) So, maybe he just copied Sonic's use of "Ore" and learned from observing. Tails using "Boku" doesn't need much explanation. He's a nice guy, but not as confident as Sonic. Think of "ore" = "atashi", confident being male/female. (In case you're wondering, "Jibun" and "Watashi" are neutral.) For Amy, "Atashi" has the same meaning as Rouge that doesn't need much text either. She is confident and learning to hold her own ground, and doesn't need anyone to tell her otherwise.

I'd say the Dub was pretty close, but SOA's localization team seemed to get a bit sloppy when matching up lines in context. So basically what we get is a series of near-literal translations that seem redundant or weird because they lose the context that's linking each line to another's throughout the story. Some places are translated pretty good, like the final standoff between Shadow and Sonic.

… You do know that Sonic has a LOT of Japanease inspirations. Like Shadow’s deal is like Vegeta, and stuff like that is very common in Japanease, and how he is the Ultimate life form is like Mewtwo from Pokémon, and why Does Rouge looks so … you know, is because it not very uncommon to have sexy characthers in children media in Japan, and then there are the Big Epic Super Sonic final fights, and similair stuff like This Can also be seen in Japanease media. Sonic was not made with an American mindset
