I've covered some parts of this demo before in old vids, but here's one that goes over the whole thing! It's really more of a localization prototype in disguise than a showcase demo.

Lmao jokes aside, this info about the E3 beta is super interesting! It's always fun to learn about the early development and builds of Adventure, and when I think I know a lot, it turns out there's more to learn haha. Think my favorite part about this demo was seeing that citizen dialogue where the kid acknowledged Sonic's previous adventures concerning Little Planet and Angel Island.

@Carbon Roller Caco Knuckles attended races (Sonic Drift and Sonic R) and took part in the fighting tournament Sonic and Co. all took part in (Sonic the Fighters) to be worthy of stopping Eggman. With that in mind, the denizens of Station Square can certainly recognize Knuckles without really knowing about his duties as guardian.

@Carbon Roller Caco How wouldn't they know about it? Angel Island was introduced as a mythical island meaning it'd be known but be treated as mythical ala Camelot. Sonic 3 established that Angel Island broke off of a continent (and at least had contact with humans in the past going from Sandoplis' hieroglyphics) while Adventure's lore says that the Echidnas were warring on other countries 3000 years ago (meaning they'd be a known element on Sonic Earth).

Galten The kid specifically references Sonic’s involvement with Angel Island. That’s why I brought up news choppers. It’s not hard to imagine Angel Island initially landing within sight of Station Square even though we never see the mainland in S3&K. Either the Chaos Emeralds disappearing from their original altar in a flash (which could’ve set up Sonic 1’s events as the flash knocked out Knuckles before he noticed the Death Egg or that Angel Island had fallen, so it could’ve occured before Sonic 1 despite being first mentioned in the JP Sonic 3 manual) or the Death Egg’s crash itself could’ve caused the island to land off-origin.

I like the released version better. He sounds air headed, but not entirely stupid (if that makes any sense). The released version sounds more innocent, slightly short-tempered, but still calm and cool when need be. He’s immature. Make of that what you will, but for a character who’s canonically 16 years old, I find. It fitting.

Honestly i think E3 knuckles is better, i think all they did for DX was change some voice clips, remake the lighting engine, change the models to a higher poly and upscale the textures.

They remade the lighting engine in a way that's perfectly capable of colored lighting and then didn't use any colored lighting when the original used it EVERYWHERE. The updated character models do not fit the rest of the models in the game. They removed most of the transparent textures and literally deforested Angel Island instead of fixing the transparency issues. It's a disaster port.

Knuckles' E3 voice gives me a completely different version of Knuckles than what I'm used to. Like this Knuckles is more serious and focused on his mission and is no nonsense. And Knuckles in this game was kind of already like that.

@@Tony6Shot I'd say that it was simply overlooked during the final recording process. Whoever wrote the English scripts probably forgot to include a line for the fight. When the final dialog was being applied to the game, the programmers realized this, and simply used whatever would fit.

Probably was easier to just make the content inaccessible then remove it from the disc and risk messing something up. As a beginner game developer, i think that's a safe bet. One thing deleted could have side effects in some places

@@lemonadesnake idk how true what I'm about to say is but I've heard in Team Fortress 2, in the files is a .jpg that is simply a picture of a coconut that isn't seen anywhere in the game. When said .jpg was deleted something important prevented the game from working properly or even starting at all, so the picture of a coconut just stays there in the files since it doesn't really matter if something so small is in there.

I mean the demo spoils not only ALL the stages and sub games, but even the hidden items the characters wear in the game too. Hell, I'm surprised they didn't spoil the bosses lol

I know that I wouldn’t have felt this way if his E3 voice stayed in the final release, but I’m honestly glad Knuckles’ lines were re-recorded. His line delivery sounds better (even if that doesn’t say very much) and he sounds much more fun and kid-friendly. I still think his voice acting in SA2 and Heroes easily surpasses both SA1 voices, though.

Yeah with just hearing this I can tell they did put a lot of emotion in voicing the character. Also, it's official Ryan Drummond is my favourite voice actor for Sonic from the games and if the Adventure remake rumours turn out to be true they should bring him back cause I'd love to hear him voicing Sonic once more and with better voice direction.

Is this also where Sonic’s DX “Go!” came from? You didn’t show that. Also, that Little Planet reference makes Sonic CD sound recent, but Amy was said to be 8 then instead of 12, plus she calls her time with Sonic in the past “the old days” of “fighting bad guys” as if she’d used to be a sidekick to Sonic then. Man, even Sonic _background_ characters have a weird sense of time.

Xane Myers Yep. It was unusually mild in the DC version compared to the higher, more forceful delivery in DX (and Shuffle). With the other changed clips, I prefer the DC versions, though Tails’s E3/DX flight grunt could easily work for his tail whipping (and is, indeed, used as such in Shuffle).

Sonic isn't 18+ years old in Sonic Adventure. He's in his mid teens like in the Classic games. Meaning that the age changes are just retcons (in Amy's case, remaking her design so she looks more attractive) and don't reflect time passing. And none of that "old days" is in the JP dialogue.

It’s not out of the question-Sonic and Eggman had already been at each other several times before Sonic 1 according to that game’s JP manual, and CD’s JP manual makes no mention of Sonic’s age. Though I am now curious as to what JP Amy said at the beginning of her SA1 story.

I played a demo version on a kiosk less than a year ago, it was a compilation of several demos, it also had the comming soon screen. Sonic was the only playable character and emerald coast was the only playable stage.

Sonic CD is referenced in the final product. Amy's opening with her flashback remembering "the good old days" is supposed to be her getting rescued by Sonic during that game's events. Even though Sonic rescued her after Metal was defeated and wasn't chasing after them.

@@robonaught Yeah, although it was mostly metal sonic free. Granted metal appears in eggman's base so it isn't entirely forgotten but it's funny to think; for a long period sega themselves forgot one of the most popular villians of sonic history. Then again, they were probably still working on "Evil Sonic" which eventually got the name "Shadow The Hedgehog"; a much better name ofc, but it was funny to see him called "Evil Sonic" on their site during the early days :)

@@WakoDoodle Actually in Amy's flashback Metal Sonic is shown chasing after her and Sonic (even though Metal had already been damaged by smashing into that wall and the giant laser) so Metal in Eggman's base is not the only time he appears. Not counting his unlockable playable version of Trial mode in the DX version.

Nah, even in the E3 Demo, it was still Michael McGaharn, he just rerecorded his lines for the final release. Ryan Drummond as Knuckles is still a Shuffle exclusive.

@@sonicvsmariorandom Yeah. McGaharn did a deeper take on Knuckles' voice for the demo, but they were rerecorded for the final. If you listen closely to the Shuffle voice, you can CLEARLY tell that Sonic and Knuckles are voiced by the same guy. If you listen closely to E3 and Final Knuckles, you can tell it's the same guy with different direction.
