This actually sounds like a great baseline for a creepypasta. Random player finds this version of the original Sonic where all the enemies run from him, the player laughs at it for a few minutes, but the game slowly turns into darker undertones and by the end it's revealed to the player the nefarious reasons WHY everyone is running from Sonic rather than attempting to fight him. [Of course, knowing creepypasta authors, the twist will be something completely lame like "yOU wAZ cONTROLLING sONIC.eXE tHE wHOLE tImE wHAAAAAAATTTTT!??!!?" But there's room to make a GOOD twist work there.] As for the actual hack, the highlight for me HAS to be the FISH running away from you. That's so wonderfully silly.

Favorite sidekick between Luigi and Tails I'd have to say Tails. Hey darby, love your content. I have a question: How is rom hacking done? Do you take apart the original game cartridge and add stuff to it, or is it an online thing?

I'm not Darby, but I can answer most of your questions. Since the ROM is just code extracted from the original game cartridge and saved to a computer "somehow," a ROM hack is just editing or adding to that code or a copy of that code, either manually in something like a hex editor if you know how the blob is supposed to be structured or visually in specialized tools (usually made on a game-by-game basis). Playing the edited copy depends on the person - some people use emulators, while other people have flash carts that can hold ROMs or edited ROMs and play on the original console. I don't rightly know which method Darby uses to play, but I assume whichever is easier for him to record.

From what I've seen from Sonic romhacks, if you destroy the end of Zone animal capsule through any means other than the way you do in the base game, the game gets softlocked, because I believe pressing the button on the animal capsule is the trigger to let the game know to end the level. Which is likely why you can't shoot the capsule open in this hack, it'd softlock you. Those "triggers" that let the game know you did something already, are known as "flags". Basically "flags" are the game checking off a checklist to have the game keep track of what you've already done on that game. This is most common in RPGs, to let the game know where you are in the story and to not halt your progress by the game thinking you have not triggered the flag to tell itself "hey, you're at this part of the story! I should update the entities on the map and text to reflect your progress". Here's a really well-known example, for flags in gaming. Say, the player has started a new save file in a Pokemon game. Once they pick their starter for their adventure, a flag is checked to let the game know to not let the player claim any of the other two starters they did not pick. As the game knows the player has already made their decision on which of the three to take and therefore should not be allowed to claim the other two. I may not know how to code things, but I do have a rather simple understanding on what goes in the background in the code of videogames while a player is playing them
