The complete omission of Minecraft seems a little unfair. Minecraft Hunger games and Minecraft UHC, were battle royale mode in every sense of the way. Many players being dropped in a single map to gather resources (Check), perma-death (Check), A border that gets smaller and smaller (Check), melee and long-range pvp (Check), ability to play solo or in squads (Check). These are fan-made games within minecraft, they fit perfectly with this video.

Summary, we need a new-newgrounds. Some new, accessible engines and a hub for it all. A platform for fan game design. It will be filled with shit, but in and among those turds, there will be gold.

I get tired of mentioning this but big corporations are anti-innovation. You mentioned it in the video but big corp is anti-risk and therefore everything that is not proven to make money will be discarded. One thing that I would like to add is that big corp is also pro-monopoly because that way you can squeeze the maximum amount of money out of an IP and blocking fan-made projects is a consequence of that. Btw this goes for every industry. This is not specific to the games industry.

Couldn’t the problem itself be the need for monetization? This cycle, at a glance, seems to happen because people need to make excessive amounts of money to develop their game which leads to less risk taking because people need money. If this video exists to ask big questions, why are we not asking the biggest ones?
@SlushTV
@SlushTV 4 жыл бұрын
Well you can't just take monetization entirely out of the equation either. If nobody gets paid then they won't make games. Passion is great but people have bills to pay. I'd rather see a KZbin equivalent for video games that lets independents monetize their creations with ease.

Beside mobas and battle royale genre of games. There is 1 genre of games that based on fan games that made from dota 2 mods, it called autochess games. It is not as popular as the other, but it make new games that still played until now. Such as Team fight Tactic, and hearthstone battleground.

While I like some of the analysis and insights, I have to disagree with the overall conclusion presented. I do not, in fact, believe that the solution is to adopt KZbin's model. In fact, is argue that it would have the opposite effect desired. Sure, at first it unlocked creative freedom, but it also centralized videos to the point that blocking out "undesirable" content is easy. There's also now less chance of your product being noticed of you're brand new sure to ask the competition squeezed into one space. This has ended up stifling creativity rather then promoting it as people have to conform to the formula and play by the rules or not even be discoverable by perspective fans. I can very much imagine gaming going similarly, with a few lucky individuals reaping big rewards for great timing of early adoption, then everyone after being screwed. My advice? You need a duopoly at least. Newgrounds existed, yes, but it had a number of competitors out there doing well enough to offer a viable alternative (ichio.io as one example). We need similar in gaming: not one but SEVERAL sites to go to. As an example, I can imagine them having specializations to help stand out (RPGs here, FPSs over here, etc), but they'd be open to any game type so they can compete and diversify. Monopolies should never be the answer when vibrant markets are desired. Competition is where the creativity comes from. Still, kudos for at least being willing to take a stab at solving the problem. It's rare enough to find anyone willing to offer solutions instead of just bitching endlessly that it deserves praise, even if I disagree with it.
@SlushTV
@SlushTV 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think you make a good point about censorship and how the algorithm dictated what type of content people make on KZbin. I'd still argue it's a better alternative to the current state of affairs but I can't help but agree that a monopoly is only going to lead to a different set of obstacles. I do think the key, however, is in shifting the paradigm to viewing games and developers as content and content creators.

I mean just look at games like Gods fall. Combat style? Borrowed from souls games or very generic at least. Monsters and bosses are just damage sponges that absorbs damage without moving when getting hit. It's practically a glorified button masher with quick time events (dodging) And funnily enough to finish off monsters (press "input" to kill). That is how Action rpg's have been since Rune. People praise the Souls games even tho those games also have mediocre combat mechanics which relies on the i-frame roll for anyone to survive first encounters with enemies. It's just lazy design. Monster Hunter suffers the same issue, but atleast you have riding and stunning as different options other than to just DPS away. Why haven't the Action-Rpg genre evolved more over the years? Because there is no way in hell to create mods for those games without being a senior programmer pretty much. You can't just do a little here and do a little there. You will have to change so much about the game that it's practically just rewriting at that point. I'm just salty that i have not gotten a game which offers me a good Action-rpg combat mechanic that isn't based on Massive swinging damage sponges with a fun leveling system. Ocarina of time has better combat than fucking Gods Fall... And that's really sad.
