Knuckle Chuckle Head Stop. I'd rather play Forces than any level of Sonic Colours Sonic colours (both versions) is a 2D game with low amounts of 3D. Calling it a 3D Sonic game is a disgrace to Adventure 1 and 2, Heroes, Unleashed, Generations and Lost World.

He included the handrail parts because you can make yourself move left and right, though that clearly doesn't matter, he included the rail grinds because you can choose when to jump, though the game gives you no reason to do so except for rail switches, which are predictable, obvious, and sometimes totally scripted, and he included . . . footage from the whole game that basically amounts to "You can hold boost to win." This video is being as generous as it can with what constitutes 3D, non-boss gameplay, and it still ends up so short. Sonic Forces us to weep for him.

I did consider dropping the double-boost segments, but there's only 2 (that arn't in boss fights) and they arn't that long, I find they are comparable to the vehicle segments in sonic heros.

Except it is the truth. Just to reinforce why this is the worse possible thing to bitch about. We are only factoring in 3D time. We are completely ignoring all other elements in the game and completely ignoring the core concept of a sonic game in the first place. SPEED! The point is to get through in as short of a time as possible. This has been a thing since the original sonic games even. In fact. You could speed blitz through Generations games even faster than in Forces and you don't hear people bitching about that. So humor me something great. "OMG SONIC IZ S0 LINEAR! IT SUCKZ!" Meanwhile games like fucking flappy bird became massive hits. "OMG SONIC STAGEZ R 2 SHORT!" News flash ladies and gentleman. Short stage runs has been a thing since Sonic 1 with end stages taking longer than the norm. What does Forces do? THE EXACT SAME THING! HOLY CRAP! People want to complain about "control being taken away from them". Funny. People didn't really bitch about that with Unleashed or Colors. Want me to get right down to the point? No one will ever be satisfied. Meanwhile we have people with a sense of logic pointing out actual flaws. Flaws that people have a very fair reason to be unhappy with. Instead of people using their brains and opening their eyes, they just want to bitch about things that has existed for some time now, yet no one complained about before. Sonic 06 was a fair exception to that rule. People gripe up a storm about the glitches and poor controls. Fair enough. The gameplay was absolute trash. What did people like? The cold, dark character that was Mephiles. OMG we're gonna complain about Infinite now cuz he's 2 edgy. Jesus Christ. You want damage control? Honestly at this point the real damage rests in the community. None of the ungrateful fucks that is the Sonic fanbase is ever going to be happy. We could be given a game with 5 minute long stages, dark and light stories, avatars, perfect controls, and a carbon copy story of SA2 with a Mephiles-like villain and people would STILL find a reason to bitch. I'm glad you made this video. I will defend Sonic games to the point of always reminding people that Boom was *not* made by Sonic Team. But this is kind of unacceptable at this point. If anything, in order to bring about a big, redeeming factor for Forces, Sonic Team needs to patch in a mode that allows you to replay every single level as Tag Team mode (Modern Sonic and the Avatar). At least that will offer some unique replayability. They also need to use Sonic Unleashed/Color's grade ranking system. You should not be able to skip half of a level and still get an S. That shit would not fly in Unleashed. Would you consider doing a "Sonic Unleashed but only 3d" type of video?

Lawrence Granroth if you have Generations on PC (it's pretty heavy specs wise so u need a decent PC to run it) you can snag the Unleashed Project. It's the daytime stages modded into Generations so Sonic controls better, there's a smoother and more consistent framerate, and imo its the best way to play the Unleashed stages.

Fun fact: Sonic Unleashed HD with all DLC packs has roughly 5-6 hours worth of daytime stages. You are in control of Sonic 95% of that time. Out of that time you actively have to do something besides holding down the boost button 90% of the time. Out of that time roughly 70% is 3D. That's not to mention parts where you have to use all of your moveset and not just a small subset. Not to mention parts where you have to time your moves right and not just mindlessly mash Homing Attack over bottomless pits.

It's either a rail-grinding section that requires little to no input from the player, or it's a straight hallway to boost on. What were they thinking?! Half of this footage is filled with scripted sequences that take control away from the player for at least 2-3 seconds at a time. The game just does everything for you...

I was going to cut every single small scripted segment (like I did in green hill) but as I kinda got lazy later on in the video. There are also many areas that blur the lines (spots where your just rail grinding with nothing you can do except jump and die). I cut any double boost segments that were at the very beginning or very end of a level, because those barley count.

TheBrawlUnit To play devil's advocate here, Unleashed with all the DLC packs gives you a good 5 to 6 hours of gameplay not counting the Night stages. That game also wasn't running on autopilot literally half the time like this one. Really, Unleashed _was_ a great game if you don't count the horrifically out-of-place Werehog gameplay.

Green hill is looking a lot more like hidden spring zone right about now. I want to slap the person who made Iron fortress. Trying to complete the go fast mission is rediculous and whoever thought the autoscroller section would fit in a sonic game should be demoted to scrub monkey 3rd class.(and go mop up SEGA's bad mechanic dungeon)

I know nobody wants this, but if they just made another Unleashed day stage style game, I'm good! With levels like Shamar and Eggmanland, they were amazingly challenging while also being fun and rewarding; I just want more of that! Even the little things like the hub worlds were awesome; there were so many finishing touches and hidden secrets! Unleashed has always been my favourite, and I never understood the hate towards it! Sadly because everyone hates it, they'll never make another Unleashed-esque game again! :( And before anyone says that it takes too long, Unleashed only took two years; it's almost sickening that forces took longer but came out like complete shit! :/ Anyways, super disappointed by Forces; from the adverts, I was expecting another Unleashed/Generations style game, but nope - its just an unpolished, automated mess. I'm going to stop getting my hopes up for Sonic games at this point; Generations was the last Sonic game I enjoyed, and that came out fucking ages ago!

This is the issue with the boost formula that the other games avoided. In Sonic Rush, Rush Adventure, Unleashed, Colours, and Generations avoided. The speed can take control and substance away from the player, and this game is the example of that. Everything is on rails and automated, no real skill is involved other than holding the joystick up and jumping or attack a few times within roughly 20-25 minutes-ish of real, true gameplay. That's sad. That's why we need the Adventure formula to come back for the 3D games. The boost formula, in my opinion, isn't doing Sonic justice anymore.

well, it's already well known that Sonic Team isn't going to touch the Adventure Formula. The Boost really isn't the problem; It's a fine formula on it's own. It's just that the level design (and the Formula's execution) was kinda poor, especially since only three people had even worked on the Level design of the Game (only one of which actually worked on a Sonic game before, which in turn was Sonic Lost World). However, just because this game poorly uses the Boost formula doesn't mean that the Adventure formula should come back. In fact, the level design here is saying that the Adventure formula would be a really, really bad idea at this point. Though honestly, who knows what the next Sonic game will have it's formula based on, but I can garuntee it won't be bringing anything new to the table or re-experimenting with a formula that's always had a history of poor physics and bad cameras. (don't get me wrong, I love all three Sonic formulas. I'm just not afraid to point out the flaws in them)

+Toony iirc, Unleashed's team was mostly new to the formula too. They just didn't half ass it. Frankly I'd like a PS4/Xbox One/PC port of Unleashed. To date it's still the best looking Sonic game just because of the gorgeous Hedgehog Engine. It'd be great to have it on a system where the framerate won't shit the bed because of it.

This game had 3 NEWBIES designing levels. Why, Sonic Team? I thought forces would be successful. I thought it would be better than... than... THIS. And believe me, I wanted this to be good. I so, so desperately wanted to think this was a good game. It's not. It has good QUALITIES, but it's not good in general. I am a hardcore sonic fan, but this is disgusting. Mortar Canyon and the second half of Arsenal Pyramid look like they're the only 3D sections that aren't restricted single paths or grinding sections. This is probably the thing about modern Sonic games from Unleashed onwards I resent the most, because _exploring_ levels is what I value most in a platformer and you can't really do that when the game is forcing you in one direction.

Right, I guess I should add an addendum to what I originally said. Technically it is true that there are multiple paths in places besides the two places I mentioned. The thing is though, I see those alternate paths as branching _lines_ rather than anything resembling the wide-open exploration I like. What separates Arsenal Pyramid and Mortar Canyon from the rest for me is the fact that they look like they can allow you to explore all crevices of the space rather than lock you on whatever branch you choose. To be clear, I wasn't much of a fan of Generations for similar reasons as to why I don't care for this game. It was definitely better, but aside from Seaside Hill, Planet Wisp and Sky Sanctuary I didn't find any real replayability value. Why do I not like the "boost" formula but do like the Sonic Adventure gameplay, then? Because those games don't discourage slowing down and using free movement, and they don't fight against you (much) when you try to do things like backtracking or trying to reach some background element for fun. Simply moving around is much more enjoyable than in the boost games because in Adventure you are very much _under control_ without fear of flying off the stage with a small tap of a button. You can be precise much more easily. I never played Adventure 1, but I think a look at a speedrun will show you how much fun shenanigans you can pull off. As for 2, I did play it and I still come back to it now and again. Despite levels like City Escape, Metal Harbor and Pyramid Cave being mostly linear if you're simply going for the goal, there are still plenty of places to explore and lots of things to find just off to the side or in obscure corners, such as the Chao boxes, the animals and the secret Mystic Melody areas. Also, for every mostly-linear stage there are stages that are ABSOLUTELY NOT linear. Sky Rail, Radical Highway and Final Chase are standout examples, and Final Rush is flat-out the best Sonic level in history in my opinion because of how insanely open it is and how great SA2's grinding controls are. TL;DR: If I can't do whatever stupid bullshit I want, I don't like the game.

The Green Hill parts are scripted, you can't go left or right once you hit a certain speed. This is kinda inaccurate, I'll make a better version some time later.

Kinda, you can use the bumpers to move shift your angle, when you get to the sandy area theres a secret route you can take if you spam the left bumper. (I didn't take it in the video). Also you can always slow down and move around as you please.

2:54 you can't control them to be real. That is automated too. Trust me. If you use double boost in unscripted places, they will just be stuck in place and won't move.

Draster The game isn't forcing you to hold down the boost button, you can use it sparingly. For example, a lot of the early kirby games you can just fly over the entire stage, but that's the unfun way of doing it.

lazy, Sega... way too lazy... just design more modern Sonic levels... no Werehog, no 2.5D, NO CLASSIC SONIC IN A NON-CLASSIC GAME, and STOP with the GODDAM WISPS!!! let the rings and robo-kills give the boost!!.. the Sonic Unleashed day stages, Generations modern Sonic kinds only. just the homing attacks, stomps, multi-route shortcut/detour/red ring choices, and speed parts. gameplay like Holoska day time, Green Hill Zone modern, or Rooftop run. is that too much to ask...? oh. and maybe make them longer than 20-30 sec..? yeah. longer levels, and more of them. as for custom characters... fine. as long as we can choose the abilities of them, which may be like any of the canon characters. while also making the canon characters themselves available. make them unlockables, or something. i see nothing wrong with Amy boosting thru levels or using the chaos emeralds to go super. you want to put in actual effort? make each character's own version of the story with different voice-overs on the same levels. quit being lazy money-grubbers, do it right, and watch those sales skyrocket!

omg yes A Hat in Time. It's certainly no sonic or mario, but the controls are great, the double jump makes things feel easier to handle, and the overall experience feels polished. That game was in development for several years and I forgot its existence 'till suddenly it hit steam.

Okay, let's talk about this. Is Sonic Forces very flawed? Yes. Is it a bad game? Not by any stretch of the imagination. The biggest problem, in my personal opinion, is the short run time, but this game is nowhere near as awful as '06, Shadow or boom, or even as insulting as Sonic 4. I know comparing this game to '06 or Boom makes me seem desperate but the truth is, Sonic Forces is not as bad as people say it is. It's a fairly mediocre game that doesn't live up to the hype surrounding it, but boycotting an average game won't make the series any better in the future.

Have you guys noticed rings add to your boost only at specific parts of a stage? For instance in null space (despite the fact that we all know that for some weird reason, you can only boost with wisp capsules), at the very last few seconds before you break free, you get a couple of rings just to keep the boost going. So essentially, without those randomly placed rings, sonic wouldn't be able to boost out of null space....

I haven't played the game but these stages don't seem memorable. I'll never forget the Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 stages Emerald Coast, City Escape, Speed Highway, Windy Valley. Maybe I'm just getting older gotta remember the game is geared towards kids

I enjoyed this game, but... In the 2D sonic games, you could move in two directions. (technically four) In the 3D Sonic boost gameplay, you can only move in *one* with some slight course alteration. Why are the modern Sonic games trying to take more control from the players?

Fun Fact: Arsenal Pyramid and Mortar Canyon are literally the ONLY levels in the entire game to not feature ANY sort of 2D section. Similarly, only the second phase of the Death Egg Robot fight involves proper 3D movement of any kind. All other bosses are in 2D or are autoscrollers.
