I played the GameBoy Advance port of A Link to the Past when I was young, barely about 7 at the time when I first got it. I honestly didn't know at that time that it was a port, just a new game to play. As I played my way through each dungeon and every part of the map, I didn't even notice how much time had passed. I was enthralled with the look and feel of the game and aimed to collect all of the heart pieces and heart containers. In the end, I managed to get all the upgrades to my sword, shield, all of the heart pieces and heart containers, and I beat the final boss. And funnily enough, that was the only time I managed to do all of that. Even though it's an older title, whenever I go back and play A Link to the Past I'm always revitalized with just how polished everything looks and how well the game plays. Because of my love for it as a kid and the fond memories I have from playing it, A Link to the Past is irrefutably my favorite Legend of Zelda game from the franchise. This review was amazing Jirard and really did the game justice. Thank you for reviewing it again and have an awesome day! ^^

My absolute most favorite game! I first played this game when I was a young child before being able to read. "Every tree is crafted in a loving way"? They are literally copy pasted LOL Don't mean that in a bad way... I doubt there were much room (memory space-wise) to make every tree look different. Damn, I loved playing this game when I was 13-14. Played it a year or so after it came out, and me and my friend spent so much time in it! Love it
@zeikjt6 жыл бұрын
You know what though? The way the trees fuse into each other when overlapping is actually pretty impressive for those SNES sprite based days. Kudos to them for going that extra mile instead of just making them sit identically side by side.

INSTANT like for this being your favorite Zelda title. I was born in '93, my mom played and beat this while she was pregnant with me. My first memories were playing this game. Sure that may make me a little biased, but this game set a standard. So many elements that are staples in the Zelda series came from this game. The Master Sword, Zora's Domain, countless dungeon elements, Hyrule Castle, The ocarina(flute). The soundtrack is a masterpiece for this era of gaming. And I mean the GRAPHICS! Just the animations and graphics of going in and out of doors alone were just so visually appealing and felt so fluid. And the dungeons... Oh my goodness the dungeons are amazing. I loved the tiles in front of the door to the bosses to let you know it was the boss room. From all the big things to the little, from left to right, all down to the pixel, I love this freaking game. I feel like an old lady describing how things were back in her time. Help me...

I was 10 years old when LTTP came out. I had saved my allowance for months for it and I remember being so excited about getting it that I had my ride home from school drop me off at Sears department store. They ended up not having the game yet so I had to walk miles to Software Etc at the local mall. Thankfully they had it but now I was a over an hour walk away from home. My excitement somehow got me thru the long walk back. By the time I got home it was after dark , I was hungry, exhausted and didn't have much time to play before bedtime so I was pretty bummed. But once I popped that cartridge in and played that opening sequence, all that didn't matter anymore. It was the best game I had ever played up until that point, beating out my old favorite the original Zelda. Whenever I play it I always remember that first release day craziness.

Finding your way in the woods and finding the master-sword, what a magical moment. Storm the castle, defeat the sorcerer and rescue the princess! But oh no, that's only the tutorial. The dark world was so scary as a kid. "Wait what?! I'm not done!? Why am I on this creepy pyramid? What are all those scary monsters?! They're so much more powerful! How do I get home!?" When you didn't know beforehand, it was a plottwist done right. A twisted, new world to discover. So exciting to visit the places you knew in the light world, now totally changed but still somewhat the same. Much more dungeons, much more items and much more challenges! Man... Now I wanna play it again.

Let's not be unfair with the graphics comparisons with Ocarina of Time here. Yes, cartoony graphics (especially well done sprites) hold up better than 3D models, but you are also playing this on some kind of emulator, probably the SNES Classic. If you recorded this from an SNES it wouldn't even look nearly as good. N64 games upscaled on emulator look leagues better than they do in the actual console too. Overall, the emulated SNES games are gonna look better due to the art style, but I just wanted to make that point.

@mallorycarll62806 жыл бұрын
AndresLionheart -- That's what I was thinking... He's trying to compare a 2D to a 3D based on visuals. What? OoT isn't even my favorite Zelda game, but I know that comparison is a bit of a stretch since we moved on from the N64 capabilities. Of course, it's going to look a little dated. But if we're going to compare it within the time it came out, I think just about everyone would have favored the 3D model since it was then first you could play as Link in 3D space.

A Link to The Past was memorable for me in the UK because it was only time I had to go out of my way to play a SNES game: the only copy I could find was an American cartridge (and this was not too long after the game's release) and I had to buy a converter to play it. Loved every moment, and sadly it got stolen by a friend of my younger brother some years after I had finished it... But it led me to play Links Awakening, The Minish Cap, Ocarina Of Time, The Windwaker and others, and A Link to The Past for me was my First Zelda game (though I knew of the first 2 before then but never owned an NES). One point I felt I had to pull you up on... the "entire" video games industry didn't crash in 1983, just the industry in North America... Nothing happened here in the UK, we've never had a video game crash, and Nintendo of the 80's didn't have nearly as much of an impact here, largely down to Nintendo, hence why the Sega Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis and Game Gear did better (though I still own my original Gameboy and SNES, and didn't buy a Mega Drive/Genesis with Power Base Converter until about 2010).

So when Nintendo makes a good game series, has one bad game they go back to the formula that made it good? Hmmmmm..... *whispers* if only it didn't take Sega 10 years to follow this example

Zelda II actually isn't bad. ALTTP is certainly superior though. But I actually like Zelda II more than the original.

@@HardcoreGamer4Ever yep, but of course pleasing the fans is also important. I love that they aren't afraid to experiment with their powerful IPs. Some would fear tainting the brand, but I feel like each time the experiment and Branch out it only seems to strengthen their IPs

When you were describing how it held up so well, it just reminded me of when I played it and constantly thought "I'd rather play Link's Awakening, since it's way better..." Of course it's all subjective and opinion, but there are flaws in ALttP that have not help up, and have been fixed in later titles. Little things like the shield being 'just there' is boring, the menu is a pain for those who didn't grow up with it (how it doesn't let you hover over empty spaces). Also, there's the fact that the vast majority of the characters just push you along the story, instead of being actual characters. Link's Awakening (and every other game after it) fixed these (admittedly) minor issues. This was even more impressive, since it was on the original GameBoy, with the DX version on the GBC, which were vastly less-powerful systems to the SNES. The island of Koholint has many times more character than all of Hyrule and the Dark World in ALttP, which are just generic fantasy steeings. Same thing with the characters, since Marin is a more fleshed out character (and has more dialogue) than basically all of the story NPCs in ALttP combined. Again, it's all opinions, but this was the kind of things I thought when playing ALttP, and it surprises me that I've never really seen anyone else say something similar.

Looks like there's an ignorant gamer here! Because you never realised that shield blocks ranged attacks ( like in real life ), I'm guessing you're the guy who doesn't explore movesets nor techniques. I mean, there's a reason you can't attack arrows and other ranged attacks unlike with your sword and an enemy's melee attack. Two equipment slots have many flaws, even more compared to the one item, sword and shield equipment. With the custom duo slots, you can't always wield important equipment such as the sword and shield, so you could get your custom items confused with important items. ALTTP's equipment system can easily be used logically if you *know logical directions* . It can also be a pain choosing both items when exploring your inventory in LA because, y'know, two items. Most characters in LA are only used as random NPCs and plot continuation, only exception is Marin, who is sadly still a plot continuator and is only there to show a short bond. The exploration and non-linearity is greater in ALTTP, and you'll get rewarded greater than just getting a L-2 sword. Overall, most of what you said is just you being ignorant about both wonderful game titles that holds the Zelda series' system true. ( I'm aware about it being you opinion, but then again, ignorance )

I just played this game and OH MY GOD IT'S SO GODDAMN HARD. I went to get my first pendent, just to find that dying once sends you all the way back to the start. And believe me when I say it is easy to die.
@coopercummings83703 жыл бұрын
You are probably doing something wrong. A link to the past is not a hard game, especially for the era it came out in. You do need to pay attention to where enemies are, but you can outrun nearly anything, you just need to avoid standing where enemies are going until you are ready to attack.
