Join me as I sort of dive into what could be improved about Sonic's latest (released) game!
There's lots I could have touched on, and in a longer cut of the audio I did, but I opted to stick with what I felt I had the most to say about in the most reasonable amount of time.

I would say, with the game being done with low budget and only done with 60 people, i say sonic team deserve praise for teaching Sega's chairmen what can happen when they do give them time and support. It is true some aspects are barebones, some not completely polished and unfinished, but it still deliver something great. As for the story, at this point there is the theory that sega doesnt really care about the canon anymore and they will make sonic team just write about what is appealing, hence why there are no more humans, not because they "live in big cities" but rather because sega doesnt want them in sonic's world. Ye that's not something I really say in the video but something I've said elsewhere : a lot of the shortcomings are likely borne of budget restraints and other limitations/hurdles. But the work done is certainly full of love and is very enjoyable. Thank you for the comment!

My theory on the connection to the Gaia temples is that both Gaias already existed, but the arrival of the emeralds empowered them further. Then ancient people built the temples for worship and directly channeling power to light Gaia. And by this line of thinking, the emeralds arriving along with the ancients was much MUCH longer ago than we assumed. Likely millions of years ago. Going even further maybe that’s also how the non-avian dinosaurs went extinct in this universe. And maybe the ancient aliens didn’t really turn into looking like Chaos per say, but rather their species could have first spawned from the energy of the emeralds or that’s how their evolution first started, and Chaos is a pure concentrated manifestation of that emerald power that evolved or spawned them? That’s a lot of theorizing and some reaching but does my point make sense?

I also wanna add that I don’t think Chaos was ever truly a “God” aka no big G. I think Chaos got its name AND title from the survivors of the Echidna clan, who didn’t understand what it was, only the destructive power it unleashed that night. Chaos literally toppled like half the countryside that night… Eggman learned of it and the name and title bestowed upon it when he found the mural left in the Mystic Ruins, and decided “oh, a ‘god of destruction’ was sealed in that big emerald???? Say less!” As for the way they look? The master emerald’s radiation turned the ancients into chao, but I believe one chao would be chosen by the emerald as a guardian, and was restored to the ancient’s original form, as well as giving it abilities to defend the altar and chao, and allowing it to harness the Emeralds individually. We know the master emerald works in mysterious ways, showing Knuckles a vision of the Egg Carrier to locate the remaining pieces in Adventure 1, restoring the Earth to normal in Advance 3, and drawing the Ancients towards the Earth when it picked up the energy signatures of the Emeralds

Your ideas for fixes seem to be a common theme I'm noticing across a lot of open world games (and indeed _games)._ I always advocate for greater context and tying the narrative and gameplay together where possible, and yet so many games seem to prefer to keep them in different compartments. Great video! Kudos especially on the conversational illustrations. XD

Going back to the point on the boost I think it'd be interesting if you had to "build up" the boost, like run around for a bit and running around builds momentum/some meter and once it's full you can boost off at full speed and as long as you maintain movement you'll maintain that speed and just keep the normal boost for cyberspace levels like something about them allowed sonic to maintain top speed all the time without building it up

That's an interesting idea. My personal idea was that it'd mostly act as a quick burst of speed, not top speed just a running start as it were. Or, a means of maintaining your current velocity when going over unfavorable terrain or going uphill.

One thing I always thought could have been neat was adding a special combat skill per island that your friends jumped in with. Like they already give you a new skill when you free one of the friends from their moderator ban cages, but I wish they would have been a skill that like Amy or Knuckles jumped in on. But yeah, they had a lot of room to work with the whole cyberspace angle but feels like they only went half way on it. I half chalk it up to lack of time (and maybe resources thanks Sega), but it still feels a little undercooked. Also thank god someone else brought up the whole Gaia thing.

The ally-skill idea is a great one, and seems like a super obvious choice now thinking about it! I suspect there were probably a lot of more pressing hurdles to clear before fleshing out cyberspace. Shame but like. I get it.

@@TopSpinTheFuzzy Oh definitely. Cyberspace definitely feels like the "weakest" angle of the game. I don't hate it, I enjoy a lot of the stages, but feels like they fell back on a lot of the older tropes of Green Hill, Chem Plant, Sky Sanctuary, etc to fill in some gaps. It gave me a lot to talk about when the game first came out too, I've been waiting for all the patch content to come out before diving back into it for another go.

Great essay and visual scenes using art. I also do hope that Sega will use this as the foundation for future games. Unlike Nintendo, I was hopeful that they will improve on Pokemon Arceus's new mechanic foundation in their future games (not as the new pernament standered just to be improved upon in some future titles), but they immediately went back to the old format with no hope on expanding on it whatsoever like it was a one night stand. :(

About the way this game looks. I once read an article that speculated about the possibility of Sega losing some of their top dogs in charge of the hedgehog engine as a possible explanation why Frontiers has that Asset flip look. If that’s the case then maybe they should switch to Unity or something… OH WAIT Jokes aside it could be literally anything. Time constraints, money, or just the sheer ambition of making an open -world- *zone* game for the first time mind you this is all just speculation. Anyways great video. I like.

I think as for why it looks the way it does re: re used assets is probably more due to the ambition of the new project type plus budget and or time constraints. Also probably didn't much that they had to get it ready for every system simultaneously. Like I get that it was probably necessary or just the most sensible way of going about it for a number of reasons haha But yeah thank you!

Side note: Frontiers uses a lot of Assets from Quixel. An Asset library that is free to use for everyone using the unreal engine. Thats probably a big part why it looks like an asset flip since you tend to see those assets a lot.

I had a big gripe with the combat and the upgrade system. For one, it's fun to actually beat up enemies rather than spamming the homing attack. Second that you gain moves with the amount of points you obtain from enemies. If they want to flesh out the combat system, they could go the Yakuza way of have some core parts of the moves be unlockable and upgradeable. As for enemies, they really went above and beyond to see what works and what doesn't. The one guardian that was not great was the Strider. You hopping on rings and dodging their beams and colored flames is neat. But you're constantly in a fix camera view where Sonic is as tiny as a ant. And every time you ride along the rail, the legs of the Strider block your view by the time a obstacle can potentially hit you. Boss fights are good, but issue lies in Super Sonic automatically fixed to always aim at the boss. Quick-Time events are be more immersive and action packed. There's so much potential for Sonic to take from Yakuza. It's what I initially thought the combat would be like before the game unveiled it's first gameplay footage. Anyway, great video! We're at the final stretch. Curious at what they'll do for the final update.

I'm personally not buying until Sega removes Denuvo, but from what I've seen from others playing it, the game's lack of cohesion probably stems from its experimental nature. Keeping things loosely coupled allows for significant changes deep into the development cycle. Now that they have a formula to iterate on, the next game can afford the upfront planning required to make the whole game more cohesive.
