God it's nice to see some actual physics in Sonic games Listen, I like Frontiers as much as the next guy, but as long as it's based on the Forces/Lost World engine/physics/controls, it's NEVER going to be as good as Unleashed/Generations
@impostorman182 жыл бұрын
Unleashed, Generations, and Forces are on the same engine but not Lost World thanks to Nintendo
@Onaterdem2 жыл бұрын
@@impostorman18 Unleashed, Generations and Lost World use Hedgehog Engine 1, Forces and Frontiers use Hedgehog Engine 2. -Edit: Redacted, wrong information. Correct version follows.- The control/physics style is dependent on hand-written code, not the engine/physics engine (since transform-based movement is used and not physics-based movement), and Forces is built on top of the Lost World control/physics logic for some reason, which is why it feels so _off._ Frontiers is built on top of the Forces code, so it still doesn't feel as "right" and "natural" as Unleashed/Generations did
@Mister_Jay_Tee7 ай бұрын
Nothing about Unleashed felt "right". I can't really think of a game where Sonic controlled worse in anything other than a straight line. Admittedly, the cyberspace levels aren't very good feeling but they're restrained enough at least. The open world is absolutely perfect and superior. @@Onaterdem

@@Mister_Jay_Tee Hmm, I didn't explain myself very well. Let me try it again. Yes, Unleashed is very difficult to control, and usually very unfun. Sonic feels way too heavy. I completely agree. But it is still essentially physics based, with actual acceleration and momentum, so it feels very natural. With some number tweaks, which make the character lighter and more responsive, you get Generations, the best controlling Sonic ever. (I mean the balance of naturality and controllability, not raw controllability.) Frontiers does not have a physics based character controller, and went all out with controllability. This creates a game where the character does exactly what you want, turns on a dime, stops on a dime, is extremely responsive, but at the cost of feeling like a real physical being. There is no weight to any of your movements, and especially the fact that Sonic stops INSTANTLY when you let go of the left stick is unbelievably jarring. As I mentioned, a new character controller was necessary for Lost World because it was a different kind of game. More Mario-like, less physics, and it was alright within that context. You could boost with Super Sonic, and it felt different, but since the level layouts were very different too, it never stuck out. But then Forces and Frontiers kept reusing the same framework, which is wildly incompatible with boosting, and it shows. SuperSonic68 (creator of Green Hill Paradise, Bumper Engine, and many other fangames) has a beautiful video on the flaws of Frontiers "physics" (don't remember the name, sorry), showing some examples which were correct in the Unleashed/Generations character controller but not Frontiers, which Morio Kishimoto watched and acknowledged (gives me hope!) As to Cyber Space, well, the reason it's extremely restricted is because if it weren't, then you'd notice it actually controls worse than Forces. Like holy sh*t they dropped the ball on that, Open World at least feels very snappy, Cyber Space is a SLOG. Everything is SO SLOW. If Cyber Space was built with Open Zone controls, my rating for Frontiers would immediately jump from a 7 to a 7.5 or 8. Anyway. Getting too long already, I just wanted to add, if you want a Sonic-like game where the physics feel super natural yet the controls are extremely snappy and you can chain different moves and pull off actually SICK combos, please check out Spark the Electric Jester 3 (by LakeFeperd, creator of Sonic Before & After the Sequel). It's legitimately a fantastic game, easily GOTY 2022 for me, surpassing Frontiers in most aspects despite being an indie game. MINDBLOWING story, too.

I like how that first red ring placement was different and had more thought than any of frontiers' spots.
@kaobunn Жыл бұрын
i dont think the red star ring placement in Frontiers is meant to be like colors where you have to dig deep in the level design to find it it's moreso a "how many of them can you grab in one run" kind of thing

So we have Unleashed Sonic running in Cyberspace 1-1 from Sonic Frontiers, with aesthetics taken from Generations, and level design taken from Unleashed, in Sonic Generations.
