Should probably stress this since some people are misinterpreting what I'm saying; In this video I rarely talk about game quality or my thoughts on certain games which has caused people to assume I hate everything that has come out of the "The Meta Era" when it's quite the opposite, Colours and Generations are some of my favourite Sonic games and I think even Lost World is a ton of fun. I moreso just hate the impact they had on the brand and what Sega did as a response to their success. The writers are also not to blame! If Sega didn't like what the writers were doing then they would tell them to change it. Colours' writers have a boss who told them what to do and they were just fulfilling their wishes, same with Aaron Webber, he is not to blame at all, he's just doing his job and trying to have a bit of fun.

Feel similarly. I'm one of the few that enjoys lost world, and alongside most folks enjoyed Mania and Generations. But the way SEGA is treating the series inside and outside of the games, to the point where the games at their very best will never come close to their potential because of those lovely mandates. It's hard to respect the series when it no longer respects itself, it's creator's intentions and it's fans. In favour of shallow pandering, especially towards pop-media critics and this bizarre hatedom this series has gained. Any who glad you made this video, alongside other channels. Even if nothing happens, they no longer have an excuse to play stupid, and people can realize this franchise was genuinely worked upon and cared for once upon a time.

I was actually going to diagree with this comment, but now that I think about how Forces turned out, you might be right. Instead of trying to focus on one solid Modern gameplay style throughtout, they instead tried to cater to the mainstream crowd with the Avatar and nostalgiabait with classic. Instead of getting a serious story that would fit the premise, we got a mess that tried to be extremely lighthearted and serious at the same time and ended up falling flat on its face on both ends. After all, we can't have take ourselves *too* serious again, because that's the reason why people disliked 06's and Shadow's narratives, not because they're poorly written, paced and rectonned the shit out of previous games. And don't even get me started on the mess that is the music direction. It seems like they really had no fucking clue what to do with this title.

Bandanna Doo What’s also really interesting on this one is that the Mario 64 formula is absolutely nothing like the 2D Mario formula. 3D Land and World were 3D versions of the 2D formula, but the majority of the fanbase came to the conclusion that they liked the 64 to Galaxy version better because it was more interesting and played it less safe.

well actually, the term "meta Era" comes from the idea that Sonic Team's approach over the last decade seems to be listening way way way too much to its fanbase, trying to course correct from what they did last time, but going way overboard. In other words, they're focused on the meta of the series and appealing to that rather than focusing on making a quality product

The Sonic Series was doing everything right with the Adventure Games & 06 had a better story than anything we've gotten from the 2010s decade & only suffered from being severely rushed. Black Knight was the last Great Sonic Game, & after that Sega of America gave in to Critics & betrayed the actual fans entirely. The "Just Sonic" mentality was a mistake which only the critics actually wanted. Its kind of ironic that the "dark age" of the sonic series was also sort of a peak in terms of Sonic's character. Even in a generally disliked game like 06, I still felt that his character genuinely changed into something great. He was down to earth, and was humorous whenever he felt like he needed to be. hell, even in the worst case scenario, he still saw a bright side in things and somehow manages to make things right.

Star Fox has anthropomorphic animals and it takes itself seriously. Pokemon has some anthropomorphic animals and it can take itself seriously. But when Sonic even comes up with a serious story idea, it's apparently bad because...? I'm not saying some of the serious Sonic stories don't have flaws, but serious Sonic stories absolutely can work and it doesn't matter if the villain resembles an egg or if the hedgehog is blue. The classic games are literally metaphors about the destruction of the environment and corruption. Sonic was serious from the start and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. If it wants to be more light-hearted, it can - and when it wants to be serious, it should embrace it. Period.

YUP. I don't know how they do it, but man, I can search up just about any Sonic game and enjoy the whole OST. My favorite part about this fact and the fact SEGA is fine with fan-work is that this leads to even MORE incredible music, like Sonic Before the Sequel and After the Sequel. These OSTs are amazing and stand up next to the best in the official series and I listen to them in my daily life a lot. I never seen any clips from the "fairy tale/story board" Sonic games like secret rings and black knight before, I think I may like that portrayal of Sonic even more than his adventure days. What I like most about it is his wisdom and maturity or atleast advanced maturity from previous entries, a lot of that has to do with Jason's voice direction for Sonic as it sounds like he has aged and learned somethings along the way, I want to see more of that.

Sega is the kind of company that has a shit ton of potential, but refuses to use it, either out of fear, sheer incompetence, just generally missing the mark, or all three. And sonic doesn't deserve to be dragged downward by it by people who don't know what to do with sonic since everyone apparently everyone has a different vision of what the franchise should be. I get that Sega has other more critically and financially successful franchises under their belt and that "Sega would be fine without sonic", but when you think about it, Sega wouldn't be the same without the blue blur. Sega would just be another Japanese video game company with nothing really special about them outside of video games.

Any of that sound familiar? There isn't really an end to these if you're keyed in. If you're looking for them, I'd say they do it most in the Super Mario Bros 3 LP and the Luigi's Mansion 3 Let's Play I can't really feel sorry for the Grumps here, a then-member of OneyPlays was doxxed by the Game Grumps fanbase specifically because he thought that Dream Daddy was pandering to the LGBT community (he was LGBT, so he'd know more about it than Arin) and the Grumps did absolutely nothing to address the matter. Even his parents were harassed in this. TLDR: OneyPlays makes fun of Game Grumps sometimes.

I don't get the critics who say games like Unleashed or Black Knight are "anti-sonic". Sonic's character design evokes the classic Disney anthro mascots, and Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck were constantly traveling to nonsense medieval worlds or whatever to fight ancient evils with comically clashing art styles. Sonic vs King Arthur is just as silly as Mickey Mouse battling Satan himself in Fantasia. If Sonic took his role as a 3 foot naked rodent knight seriously I would get it. I just think going forward that unless SEGA overhauls everything with their approach to Sonic that he'll stay as the collective punching bag of the gaming sphere forever. You are so right when you bring up their vision of him and the franchise. In the past 2 console generations alone they've flip-flopped, backtracked, forward-tracked, reinvented, and revised the games so much that there is no consistent form of Sonic. It's like every new game is trying to re-establish the universe and just divides fans more and more on what they would want Sonic to be.

I miss the dark age of Sonic. That term is defined by completely Sonic 06 and people just... WILLINGLY chose to ignore to fun games around it. Like the Rush games, the rivals games (I'll give a pass to this as nobody had a PSP to play it.) Unleashed, black knight (I'll die on this hill this game was fun) etc, etc, etc. But at least this has given Sega the time to focus on other IP's and that gave me the yakuza series. So that's neat.

The fact that the ending music to Sonic Adventure 2 is able to be so goosebump-inducing and tender after you just played as two anthropomorphic hedgehogs, one blue one black (except they were transformed into yellow and creamy beige respectively at the time) fighting a gigantic lizard which is related to the latter hedgehog through experiments being sourced from murals in an ancient palace featured in a game made seven years prior and oh yeah the latter hedgehog also dies at the end asking in spirit a dead 8 year old child who got shot by a paranoid sect of the military if he did the right thing... it shows that despite its absurdity, at one time, Sonic could fully suspend your disbelief and let you bathe in its world. I hope one day we can return to those golden times.

What I hated was when sonic became wAcKY and sega artificially inflated his self esteem to the point of asshole, rendering his heroic character unlikeable... Then they had the nerve to self depreciate thenselves: "Wow I'm so poorly written and egotistical hahaha please laugh". I wish they'd actually solve the problem rather than confirm and enforce that hes an unlikeable, unfunny prick. Sonic was NEVER like that. Sure he'd make an occasional joke but it wasn't his entire character. He genuinely cared about his friends and the people he was saving and he took many situations seriously, despite his large confidence.

The funny thing is that this whole community rant of "Sonic has lost is way" happened way back in 2008, 2 years after 06 released. Fastforward to 2020 - 3 years after Sonic Forces released - and now the discussion is being brought back. This mass fan backlash is just one big cycle. I'm sure that if Sega listens to this fan backlash and "fixes Sonic", the generation that grew up with the Sonic that was despised is going to want that Sonic back. And it also affects the reputation of Sonic games. After 06 released, people were criticizing the Adventure games for supposedly leading up to "the current state of Sonic." Now fans are criticizing Colors and Generations for leading to "the current state of Sonic". And I'm sure that the generation that is growing up with Sonic Forces, Sonic Mania, and the Sonic movie are going to be doing the same. One final thing: All the best Sonic games released at the start of a new decade ;).

i've read them and in my spheres receptions mixed, i wouldn't say they're bad, just the best thing in years which is still just above mediocre, has good concepts but still falls back on things fans were sick of like the zeti. just lead to people idolising the comics cause it was the return of quality for modern sonic storytelling, and hatred cause people got over hyped and expected something as complex as the story in sonic adventure.

They were kinda cheap and petty shots in my opinion. Let me explain. I'm a fan of both Game Grumps and LS Mark and I know that there are people that are amused and entertained by Game Grumps and there are also people who are amused and entertained by LS Mark and I just happen to fall into both categories. I think both these channels are really good and I find enjoyment in them one way or another, however the fact that one is at the throat of the other with more hatred than a human being should have towards another human being makes me sick. So maybe you don't agree with the choices of someone else and their brand however you shouldn't let that anger boil so much that it turns into vicious hatred of another person who's just doing his job in a way that some people find entertaining. Like I said I'm a fan of both these channels but I didn't know I had to choose one to like and hate the other.

While I felt that Unleashed Sonic was a bit too tame and mellow, I think Black Knight Sonic is easily the best iteration of Sonic’s character with SA2 and Secret Rings being close seconds. He still had that famous Sonic cockiness and snarkiness, but actually had some depth and nuance to his character other than those two character traits. In particular, Sonic’s love for freedom, strong sense of justice, and heart of gold. I will never understand people that praise Roger’s/2010 Sonic man. What is appealing about stripping all the traits that made Sonic such a great character and flanderizing him to an egotistical clown who never shut’s up?

I wasn't really a Sonic fan up until later last year. I played the classic games and Mania cuz my cousin had got me familiar with them, but I was never fully hooked. Then a friend of mine who I deeply respect and is a big Sonic fan asked me if I would like to play Sonic Adventure 1. She would talk about the best parts of these games, but she was actually a bit hesitant on asking me to play. To her surprise I immediately said yes since I love spending time with her and tbh we just finished making our scenes for Sonic Rebuilt at that time. She would try to talk a lot of good but then try to tone it down and say that "You might not like it idk." Honestly I knew she was worried since she probably expected me to repeat a lot of stuff most people say about this game, but honestly I had fun playing the game. I knew it was old and it wasn't gonna be perfect, hell I did my best to break the game, but I had genuine fun nonetheless. So far I've beaten 3 stories (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles) and I want to beat the other three soon (we play the game together so we both have to find time to play), but because of her and the fact that I helped make Sonic Rebuilt in a small way, I'm now a fan of the series... So in turn I now know my friend's pain when it comes to the later games. Watching this video solidifies my feelings that Sonic can work if they just did what they wanted rather than listening to the fans. Other than that it also made me a bit emotional since playing Sonic Adventure with her will probably be one of my most cherished memories

While this isn't the first video of its kind, I'm very glad you made this with the subscriber count you have, and I really hope that your video and JebTube's video can make a difference within both Sega and the whole franchise, and hopefully Eyepatch Wolf and Johnny watch this video too. I too have felt this way about Sonic for a while, ever since... Lost World or Boom I wanna say. The last Sonic game I got excited for that wasnt Mania was Lost World and... I didnt like it. I got a little excited for Boom but got cautious since hurr durr Sonic Cycle and all that. Mania was really good as a casual fan of the Genesis quadrilogy but I vastly prefer the 3D titles, and I'm glad you called out people who believe in the whole "Sonic had a rocky start into 3D" bullshit when that's not even close to being true. But now with the horrible writing being taken to its logical extreme with Forces, I had to draw the line somewhere. Unrelated but I never knew the Sonic Boom cartoon writers had little to no experience with Sonic yet managed to make something funnier than ANYTHING Pontac and Graff have ever worked on. Really opened my eyes on how bad of writers they truly are. Those clips you showed of Unleashed and Black Knight really sold me back on how great of a character Sonic was becoming. Out of context they're a little silly (especially the Black Knight clip) but it doesn't take away the fact these games had a soul, and now that soul is gone. The fact that most Sonic Team developers left to work for Nintendo says a lot (and would explain that rolling move Mario had in Odyssey lmao), and look at how they made a Mario and Zelda people are still talking about, with the latter getting an anticipated sequel. Which reminds me... sorry to hear your interest in most vidya is dwindling overtime. Getting older can suck, but I hope you could play a game that could reinvigorate that spark that isn't Sonic. Might I suggest Yakuza 0 that you mentioned in the video earlier? That's a fantastic game that knows it's a game yet knows how to tell a deep and compelling narrative that made me cry in a lot of instances, with great minigames to boot. Overall a great video. I was always a distant viewer of your content but now I've subbed.

A big contributor to Sonic’s loss of identity is that his FRIENDS had THEIR identities stripped from them. In the Genesis games, they were clearly built using Sonic as a base, but also had their own skills, histories and personalities. Adventure 1 honored the old identities while also giving them gameplay goals that fit their story roles. Adventure 2 was when things first slipped as instead of the story defining the gameplay, the reverse happened. Tails was jammed into a mech to match Eggman and Knuckles’s shard hunting gameplay was reused, and since SA2 was a smash hit, their SA2 gameplay became their new standard, which meant that in the future, Sonic’s friends would be defined mostly by being TOTALLY DIFFERENT from Sonic instead of having a chance to be similar to him a la the Genesis template. Being totally unique from the main character isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but Tails and Knuckles, _Sonic’s closest partners,_ were retroactively affected by this: Tails is no longer about speed even though it’s supposed to be a fixture of his character as his real name expresses, and while Knuckles retained his physicality, he’s relegated to item finding instead of being able to traverse rough paths. Their potential got neutered. Also, Amy and Rouge got stonewalled and Cream got totally sidelined. Now only Shadow and Blaze are remotely similar to Sonic, with the former becoming the series’s new secondary icon. … And the backlash to ‘06, which only knew those butchered versions of the side characters, got them decommissioned, which meant that Sonic had to do everything on his own. So Sonic Team made him into a total Mary Sue, and eventually stopped developing his character as well.

I'm a Sonic fan until the end of days... It all started when we lost Ryan as the voice actor for Sonic. I liked the storybook plots of Rings and Black Knight. I liked Sonic's personality, his voice acting, and just how cool he was. Sonic needs to stop making "funny" jokes, cringy personality, and go back to being sarcastic and serious. Like your example of him in Black Knight. He was so cool. He got his ass handed to him by Melina, is all scuffed up and hurt, and says "A knight...never flees...his foe....right?" When he was in Secret Rings, he tells Erazor Djiin "You shall live out the rest of time, trapped inside your lamp as you were in the days of old!" That line is so well delivered, and is honestly just a cool line in the script. And remember Dark Spine Sonic? Bro! Where the fuck do you come up with the name " *DARK SPINE* " Sonic!? He sounds pissed in that form, his voicelines are more cocky, he's going off on Erazor's heart like he's JoJo's Stand going "ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA," he's just such a badass in that game. But tbh, he was at his prime in Black Knight. Bring back this Sonic man....just stop this funny bullshit. I'm begging you Sega. And bring back Ryan, idk what happened to Ryan but he's BORN to voice sonic, and I love Roger Smith, but he isn't Sonic.

I admit, I am someone who got interested in Sonic based on the weirder aspects of his fandom. CWC, the crazy movie design, Ugandan Knuckles etc etc. Sometime around when the first trailer hit I decided to look back and see what I had missed and was surprised to find some genuinely good stuff. Fun games, good comic storytelling, entertaining tv shows.... and for it having all the consistency of a fever dream, that was an aspect in itself that endeared it to me. As you point out, the franchise taking risks. It doesn't always hit the mark, but it can and certainly does try. Pandering doesn't feel in its nature in retrospect.

What Sonic really needs is someone who understands him, respects him and knows how to write him. We fans can brag about how much we know Sonic, but when we look at the bigger picture, we actually know just what Sega wants us to know about him. If they want to get back from burning in the Lava Reef Zone, they have to look back at each and every Sonic stuff, what made some games and shows successful, where they should do callbacks and inclusions and think carefully about what they'll do.

I think the problem really is consistency, you have to remember Mario and Zelda had the CDI games and people love to make fun of them but they aren't brought up as "this is why mario sucks" because on a whole when Nintendo puts out a product with that IP it is going to be at least better than mediocre. With Sega as a whole, not just sonic, while one game may be fantastic ala Sonic Mania, the very next game will have very muddled ideas and gameplay ala Sonic Forces. Unfortunately, this kinda taints most Sega IPs, where a great game is seen as an outlier instead of the norm. The only Sega property I can think of that actually is consistent in tone and quality is the Yakuza franchise and now that is a flagship property for the company.

I never thought the franchise would turn up like this. Back in 2010, my cousin introduced me to Sonic with Sonic 06. That time I never realised Sonic 06 was a glitchy game. Maybe because we never had the game before and we only watched a few gameplays and cutscenes. There were few other Sonic games we watched like Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Adventure 2 and others. I had no clue about the Sonic fandom during those times until later on when I found Sonic parodies on KZbin. That was only a surface of the Sonic fandom. Some years later, I lost interest with the Sonic obsession for a while and decided to come back and then I found Sonic Boom. I got deeper into the Sonic fandom afterwards to see the issues happening in the Sonic franchise. Never thought the franchise I used to be obsessed with it would go downhill

Hey i know what you mean, ever since this whole meta era of game's came out i feel like the whole spirit of sonic has been lost, I mean I remember back in 2011 when generations was announced and i was super excited for it not only for the remixed levels but the story as well, like i wanted to see how all these levels where connected like was it eggman or someother villain messing with the timeline? How is sonic getting to all these levels? Is he using a time machine but in the end all we got was LEVEL'S in a WHITE VOID And that kinda bummed me out how there wasn't any world building like in the adventure game's or unleashed they didn't really explain anything, the plot just felt like it was there for the sake of having a plot and every other game like lost world and forces just had a plot as backdrop to game instead of being part of the game (if you know what i mean) look at heroes that game barely has any cutsceens but they still gave enough of a shit to flesh out the character's during gameplay and having little character moment's here and there to remind you there's still a plot. I honestly still enjoy the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and along with some nice fans I talked to. The main problem in my opinion is that the "fans" complain about everything. For an example, Sonic Unleashed is still one of the best Sonic games to come out. But most of the complained about the werehog stages and automatically thinks this entire game is bad for this. (The gameplay was fun and I like that Sonic gets to explore the area instead of blazing past everything). The fans always manages to split the community into over every game that is released and that's example sad. This franchise has a ton of amazing games but they are either overlooked or underrated.

After Jason and the rest of the 4-Kids cast left the decline just slowly started rolling in, the writing staff changed to people that barely knew a thing about Sonic which ruined the stories one of the main reasons I stood with the franchise over Mario when I was younger, the characters personalities were also butchered since the staff didn't know who they were writing for and how to portray said character. Agreed, this is the lowest era in Sonic history. It has been 3 years since the last Sonic game and it was only meh, not incredible and only passably okay. And Sonic's personality has broken to bits today. I hate the new personality Sonic has and I agree, Unleashed and Black Knight have the best acting Sonic ever had with him feeling real and not forced. Unfortunately those two games failed because the gameplay wasn't what people wanted so they rewrote the book on everything.
