I can’t believe I have to make a callout, those character animations you praise so much, are also a part of the Digital Deluxe Edition, so literally, if you get the base version, your just getting the plain islands as they are with no animations whatsoever. Also if you plan to pay for the DLC later after getting the Base version, it costs more than just getting the Digital Deluxe Edition as is. Much like how Banana Mania did it

2:35 a little fun fact: the AI upscaling for Sonic CD’s opening and ending we’re done by members of Discotek Media. A company over here in North America known for really good remasters of classic and niche anime titles. Like their recent release of the Darkstalkers OVA and their upcoming release of the classic Digimon anime which also uses AI upscaling, for example

All this looks good but because it’s not Physical and I disagree with the 40$ plus 5$ DLC (why the fuck does a compilation of 30 Year old games have DLC, especially when the features are minimal as hell) price tag, I will not be buying this. Something I would’ve hoped it had was Knuckles’ Chaotix and The Sonic OVA because they’re not as well known as the other things.

After hearing the Carnival Night music Origins uses, I'm kinda disappointed they bothered remastering the prototype tracks at all. I'd much prefer if they had just ripped them straight from the original prototype, since these new ones seem to take more inspiration from the sound of the PC Collection's versions (which almost everyone agrees didn't sound good) to me Carnival Night sounds a lot less exciting than it did in the prototype, which isn't a good thing when the zone is based on a carnival.

8:38 I doubt Sonic 2's level select was removed altogether because of the options screen not being there. In the mobile version, if you happen to be playing the game on Bluestacks (or the decompiled PC port), the level select code was exactly the same as it was in the Knuckles in Sonic 2 lock-on: Press Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right on the title screen, and press "Start" (or whichever other button) after the ring chime plays.

You’re correct, it’s the lock on code and then you press y on switch, square on ps5, and x on Xbox. Then you’re at level select and sound test

Yeah I expected WAY more from an "indepth review". He didn't even mention mirror mode, boss rush, Sonic CD's toggleable soundtracks, CD's vocal opening, some of the deluxe edition contents funnily enough, 2P multiplayer (especially for S3&K), Sonic & Knuckles, none of the overlooked scene updates, ETC.

8:37 last update I swear lol. But yeah people found that it’s still there, just it’s now the level select code from Sonic 2 when attached to the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge. AKA when on the title screen, press Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, and then, depending on the console, press either X on Xbox, Square on PlayStation, or Y on Switch. That should do it

With Anniversary Mode I don't understand why they couldn't add the option to have lives. I mean, would it really have been THAT hard? Especially when you consider that Sonic Jam, back in 1997, let you select game difficulty - Easy, Normal and Original - and turn off the stage time limit across Sonic 1-3&K.

I love Sonic Origins, the Collection is extremely Solid, but I have a couple of Issues/Nickpits I have to say, I haven't really noticed any Changes or Issues about Sonic 1 or Sonic 2, I've mostly noticed a couple of Audio Issues with Sonic CD, such as 1. Sonic no longer saying "Yes" when getting an extra Life, 2. Amy not yelping when getting grabbed by Metal Sonic and also no longer making the Noise that you hear when trying to hug you in either Palmtree Panic or Stardust Speedway, 3. Sonic no longer says "I'm Outta here" after waiting 3 Minutes in a Level without doing anything, 4. The Twinkling Sound is missing from the Good Ending to make you feel all Warm and Fuzzy for saving Little Plannet, but I'm last Compliment about the Origins Port of Sonic CD is that the Games Original Ending Cutscene has been sped up to not play in Slow Motion and it also doesn't play it's Original Sound Effects, it immediately cuts straight to the Music, but what I do appreciate is that the Quality of the Cutscene is extremely Great and the Vocals for Cosmic Eternity have been Restored, which were replaced by Instrumentals in 2011, a lot of Fans who prefer the Vocals will appreciate that (Myself Included) Last but not least, we can't talk Audio without addressing the Elephant in the Room, there's Remixed Prototype Music that replaces some Iconic Tracks for Sonic 3/Knuckles, but it's only 3 Zones and for the Super/Hyper Form Theme, Carnival Night Act 1/Act 2, Ice Cap Act 1/Act 2, Launch Base Act 1/Act 2, There Tracks are not bad, but the Originals are better, but asides from that, this port of Sonic 3/Knuckles is perfect and I don't have any Issues or Complaints about it

The sonic 2 cheat code should exist. It should be up, up, up, down, down, down, left, right, left, right. On the title screen. This is an alternative code to the Sega letters one for Sonic 2 on mobile. They made this code purposefully to make it possible to play and do everything in the game with a controller. It should work, and if it doesn't then there isn't any other code I'm aware of. Sources used: Sonic Retro Also, those cheat options were all available options in the mobile ports for a long time. Sonic 1 and Sonic 2's level select is tapping the sega letters. Or for Sonic 1, Up, Down, Left, Right. The code for Sonic 2 is the same code as the level select for Knuckles in Sonic 2. And Sonic CD removed the 3rd sound option for the sound test. So, it is just 12, 11. Just thought I would share that information.

10:12 You find blue spheres hard? It's one of the easiest of the 4 in my opinion! Sonic 2's half second reaction halfpipe is the troublesome one especially when tails kicks the sides of your emotions by ramming head first into an explosive and jumping afterwards to spite you and the rings you just lost... In blue spheres, you get a slightly better view and can turn aro5to avoid stuff, and best of all, Tails doesn't cause trouble or have any impact whatsoever in that one.

A little disappointed they didn't take a page from Generations and make it so you can play the unlocked music in any stage you want. It would have been nice to listen to Seascape and Evening Star from Knuckles Chatotix in a stage since they'll probably never rerelease and improve the game. This could have been the next best thing.

I’m upset about the original 3 & K MJ music not being in the game, the prototype versions aren’t as good and don’t fit as well Why can’t they get this issue sorted out so they can use the release versions, these versions don’t fit as well and the tone and feeling isn’t the same at all. IK there are still versions with the original music and origins will have mods on pc (and the music is online) but still it’s not ideal I at least hope CD still lets you select the soundtrack version

Sonic origins are a great way to experience remastered games with more elements. Although I do understand why you preferred the MJ versions of Sonic 3 tracks, because the prototype music wasn’t mentioned until hidden palace found it in 2019. For me I like the prototype versions of those tracks.

I pre ordered for ps5, not just for myself, but so my 9 yr old son who loves sonic more than me can play it on his ps4 (I'm an OG fan who loves the 2d games, likes colours and generations. he loves ALL sonic, even the bad lol). We're both looking forward to it, and I'm overall happy with what people are saying. (no the new tracks don't offend me, I can play my ps2 collection for those old tunes, I understand the reasons why). It's just a shame Sega dropped the ball on some scummy pre order dlc deluxe feature bs. £35 is a lot of money for these old games, they should have included ALL this content. Maybe a physical complete edition will release later on, like mania plus. For now, I'm just gonna enjoy what's on offer. After Elden Ring... I need a nostalgia filled comfy game 😊

Now that I'm not as distracted by Mushy, this was an awesome video. I pre-ordered a while back and haven't been able to play Sonic 3 in years, I don't have a PC, just a laptop that functions for making my music haha. My current consoles consist of a PS4 and Switch, as I sold off my retro stuff by now. I'm sad that Jun messed up the beta songs by making them sound worse, but I can get past those for sure. I'm honestly excited for Mirror Mode, it feels completely different to play. Mission mode's gonna mess me up :D

I don’t mind Anniversary Mode at all, makes sense that they’d want to get rid of the live system considering how “chaotic” the level design of the old games. Like you said though, my only criticism is not being able to have lives with both the widescreen and extra content from the Retro Engine ports, you’re stuck with classic mode in that aspect

"Sonic Origins is well worth your money" I get that the product is worth whatever you're willing to pay, but $40 USD ($50 plus tax in CAD, making the deluxe almost $70 in total) for 4 games that are 30 years old with a few tweaks that are already unnoficially available with rom hacks like Sonic 3 AIR, while the official versions have been sold for $5 each or all together in a $20 collection that includes over 40 genesis games as well doesn't sound worth it. Which sounds better: a $40 collection with $10 DLC that includes 4 games in widescreen with an added mirror mode (which you can create on your own by flipping the screen and remapping the controls) plus a few extras while removing some original music, or a $20 collection (maybe lower nowadays) that comes with over 40 genesis games with extras with the original music intact?

Oh they used the PC songs for the sonic 3 and knuckles 9Sonic 3 and Knuckles Collection) levels (which were based of the prototype music before micheal jackson got involved) ! I grew up on that first as my first sonic game so it's like the game has come full circle, but I understand the genesis fans preferring the later songs by MJ; hopefully because it's on PC, ppl will mod it or make mods to add the songs back. Still I get why they did it, licensing reasons with Micheal Jackson Records. But they could of easily did a brand new series of remixes to avoid it, in a sort of mania style. Anyway I can't wait to get this, I hope they make more collections like this. Imagine Sonic 3D blast (with dreamcast/PC music and weather effects as options), knuckles Chaotix and either Sonic Spinball or Dr. Robotnik's mean bean machine collection!

characters were available to play as in GBA Sonic advance 3 Meaning they could do with sonic plus which would be a totally awesome idea what sonic origins plus a really awesome idea that Sega could do Is ed charming and Amy rose as playable characters using their GBA character models with updated graphics and The 2 new characters from sonic Mania The armadillo and the flying squirrel By adding and giving us insonic origins plus or DLC giving us 4 new Characters Amy rose with her hammer GBA version was updated graphics to fit better into the origin collection and charming the rabbit From GBA Cause those 2 would already have Genesis art style for the characters And also the armadillo from Mania and the flying squirrel frommania I only say that cause I can't remember their names what I think was mighty the armadillo and ray the squirrel It's the added dose for characters in sonic origin plus and gave people the option to buy the DLC to play essels for additional characters causing anniversary to make them automatically available right off the bat because you have to DLC and then go into the level select code and select those characters allowing sonic To even team up with Amy In another word giving the 3 characters in the game right now sonic and tales and knuckles The option to team up with each other and also the 4 new characters and also allowing the 4 new characters a team up whoever they want a team up with in Sonic origins plus For peoples that already have original Sonic origins Standard version And people that have the Deluxe vision of sonic origins Can also get a plus version of the game getting these 4 new characters and a ratio option Screen adjustment size for sonic origins anniversary and classic mode Giving them the screen size adjustment that you find in sonic 1 and 2 In Sega ages Which have multiple different screen sizes it would be nice if the origin collection Of sonic They release the plus option Gives you those 4 new characters I mentioned Amy and charmie and mighty and ray S playable characters And sonic 1 and 2 Screen size option That was available in the Sega ages version Allowing anniversary gameplay and animated scenes and classic mode and animated scenes to be able to play at any screen size from 4.3 Ratio and 16.9 ratio And original ratio what's some games called normal original depending on the company's choice collection Apparently when it came to the wallpaper they designed the wallpaper to only work properly if you put it in original screen size or to some collections normal screen size it doesn't work well on what some games call in collections screen fit or full screen Which is what some game collections call 4.3 ratio but some games full screen is the same thing as Wide screen for some collections use full screen size To represent 16.9 ratio emulated idea Well some games like the kawabunga collection Fullscreen Is the same thing that you would see on an N64 game on WIIU Which confuses a lot of us fans on which is the real meaning behind each screen size the only things we actually know which is actually real screen size is 4.3 and 16.9 ratios are the only thing we can define but when it comes to original Or full or Fit Screen size and normal screen size that's where companies confuse us the only time anything makes sense in a screen size is when it's 4.3 and 16.9 Are the only ratio screen sizes companies are actually honest about in the other screen size they keep labeling them differently and confusing us fans like one company will call it normal screen size while other companies would call it poet original Screen size Which is technically a 16.9 ratio on a laptop is what original and normal screen size are there a laptop screen size of 16.9 ratio But not You mention people calling Anniversary Mode a “journalist mode” and while I would normally not care if an easy mode is added, having that easy mode be MANDATORY to enjoy these games in widescreen is just patronizing as hell. I understand the removal of lives, but I personally don't like it. I think lives add to the experience, it forces you to get good, because every time you die you die you get ever closer and closer to having to restart the zone, which is punishment for the player not learning the mechanics well enough. Of course this has to be done well, which I personally think S3&K does. I'm fine with them removing lives, I just wish they gave us an option for lives in Anniversary mode, and not just Classic mode, because I want that widescreen and the extra stuff. Because it does impact me, because I like the tension. I may just have to stick with Sonic 3 A.I.R. for S3&K, but it does seem very good for Sonic 1. This is why we need an option to turn lives on and off in the 2 main modes.

Well anniversary mode does impact how I play because I have to play this shit baby mode for people who don't actually like playing video games to unlock museum content.

You forgot to mention one con: Digital Release Only. I do not support the idea that you only own the license to play the game on the console you originally bought it for instead of inserting physical media into your game console. From what I have read online, Sega has "no plans for a physical release at this time." When a game publisher says "no plans at this time," what they actually mean is "no plans at all, ever." So you're stuck paying for something you don't own, and by all definition, that is robbery and scam tactic.

I preordered the Deluxe Version. Truth be told, the removal of lives does impact my experience since I feel that the games lose something if you get rid of them. I'll probably play through it and then go back to Sonic 3 AIR. It's also disappointing that they seem to be using the beta tracks instead of composing new ones like I would have hoped. With that said though, it's better than what I was worried they would do and literally use the exact same MIDIs from the PC version, soundfont and all. Regardless, I'll probably still have a blast with the mission mode. A few things that I would have done: 1. Native Linux version, although I guess that this is sadly the most wishful thinking out of everything on this list. 2. Have Classic mode emulate the original ROMs for increased authenticity 3. Include the option for a remixed soundtrack, that would've been cool 4. Related to the above, allow custom music to be used in the 5. Feature a few ROMs in the museum. These would be unlocked through gameplay. For example, beating X badniks would unlock 3D Blast, clearing each game would unlock its Game Gear equivalent (ie, 8-Bit S1 for S1, 8-Bit S2 for S2, Chaos for CD, Triple Trouble for 3&K), and beating Sonic 3 as Knuckles would unlock Knuckles Chaotix. 6. Let the player play Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles alone if need be 7. Make anniversary mode customisable, for example being able to choose whether lives are included, having the option of toggling the time limit 8. Knuckles in CD. That would've been great, since Knuckles' climbing and gliding would go really well with CD's more exploration focused gameplay 9. Include the IDW Free Comic Book day issue in there somewhere. If this game actually includes multiple RSDK files then I'll laugh my head off, then chuck them in the decomps to see if they work. Either way, once the RSDK gets hacked I'm backporting the remixed beta tracks to S3AIR, and when the mod loader becomes available I'll make everyone deal with the PC version's MIDIs because I'm mean (what's worse is those MIDIs are actually quite good, by early MIDI standards).

To be honest, the only things I could complain about is: 1: Not adding an option to change the soundtrack in Sonic CD, because I don’t like having PTSD every time I run into a boss. And, 2: The Micheal Jackson situation, just that in general. EDIT: I just realized I’m stupid and you can change the soundtrack in Sonic CD but they never tell you how to.

@@BadnikMechanic but they still could have added an option for lives, rather than in order to get all the bells and whistles of wide screen you must play it this way (Anniversary Mode), and ONLY this way. Meanwhile back in 1997 Sonic Jam when adding the spin dash into Sonic 1, if you didn't want to use it, you didn't have to, as you could turn it off in the options menu. Along with turning off the stage time limit and if you were struggling, change the level difficulty to Easy or Normal, or just play the game as it first came out, through Original mode, along with still being able to turn on or off the time limit or Spin Dash. While it could be argued they dumbing it down, but laziness seems the bigger issue here. Especially when back in 1997 they were giving you far more options for how you wanted to play the games.
