Sonic R (Sep 10, 1997 prototype) - Walkthrough

The Sonic R prototype is an early demo version of Sonic R, dated 10th Sept. 1997 (the final release date was 18th Nov. 1997). It was released by drx during the February 23rd, 2008 proto release. The demo features three levels - Resort Island, Radical City and Reactive Factory - which are selected via a simple menu system. There are five playable characters - Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy, as well as Dr. Eggman who is selectable from the start. There is also a two-player versus mode and time attack.

This prototype is exactly 2 years older than me. Neat. Also, I seriously wish Sonic R was more refined and had more content to offer: the fact it’s only got 10 characters with nearly half of them being clones, 5 courses, a handful of Items and 5 racers present in a race is just pathetic (especially in comparison to Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing), which is a real shame since the concept behind Sonic R has a lot of potential. If this game got re-released onto current consoles with all-new content just like the 2012 version of Sonic The Fighters, I’d have 10 more courses and 20 more playable characters to even things out, along with having 8 racers present on the track, unique Battle Mode courses and Online Multiplayer to boot.

This game was released by November of 1997, and this proto is from Sept 10, that tells you how half cooked this game was released. 5 circuits and barely any content with awful controls. To put it on perspective Mario Kart 64 had 16 circuits plus mirror mode plus 3 cc variatons and 4 vs circuits on top of that.
