Uh, kinda. Apparently, when the game was rushed out of the door, some nimrod rendered the song wrong, and then it became angry tesla coils... somehow.

Ok, so I've looked a bit more deeply into it... and yeah, you're actually probably right! There are two channels that sound like Tesla coils, Channel 2 and Channel 3. However, it seems like one of them (I'm betting Channel 2, but I ain't sure) was meant to play with a different set of instruments, but things got messed up, and it played with the same set of sounds as the other one, making the grundgy coils sound very loud, and undermining the intended melody. Or something like that, it's not like someone explained that to me, that's just me guessing this was how it went.

There's nothing wrong with GEMS it self its more how people used it, a lot of western devs were lazy with it and instead of making their own good patches just used the built in ones which were of interesting... quality.

@CP D2191 It's the complete opposite. Sega of America and STI were doing their absolute hardest with what they were given to work with. Sega of Japan had this weird hateboner for SoA because of how much more popular Sonic was in the west. To call the US developers lazy would be saying Sonic 2 was a fluke. You also have to remember Sonic Spinball was also a 2 month effort tossed together by SoA because SoJ couldn't finish Sonic 3 in time for holiday '93.

_Honestly I kinda prefer the original._ Wish it was little more balanced in terms of volume, but funnily enough, I thought it was not only more unique but also kinda fit the feel of the game better imo? Spinball in particular has a very dark and mechanical aesthetic, so the aggressive shredding bugged FM worked better imo - the volumes were just balanced poorly since it was a mistake in the first place.

@@Seven71987 I spoke to some of the prominent Genesis romhackers like Segaman and LinkueiBR and they swore by GEMS as an actually great sound driver that was often utilized poorly back in the day. Segaman released a music replacement hack for Double Dragon on the Genesis that used GEMS to great results.

I think some of the instruments are playing correctly in the original but some are incorrect. The rhythm chord track is louder than intended. The rest is correct. Your version changes more than just the chord tracks so I am not considering this to be the "intended" version. I'd be interested in mixing some of your version into the original one.

All of these instruments are actually there in the original version, the volume levels were just poorly mixed because of the rushed development. Think of the 47 minute glitch in the Sonic 3 level select menu where one bell just randomly becomes super loud. The synth on the original track was made way too loud by accident.
