Willie Barton it was the height until sonic mania raised the bar and introduced ray and mighty. I love all the old sonic 2D games , (sonic 1, 2 and 3, sonic and knuck, sonic cd) but imo sonic mania is the quintessential sonic game. The best 2D one ever made. Hope we get mania 2 or something like it

It's amazing how easy the Emerald games are once you memorize the patterns. You also know @49:15 also pissed a lot of people off back in the day. Many couldn't figure out using up and down to move the pillar. Damn that ending music @1:08:04 brings back good memories.

Fun fact: when you get to 19:16. Stay in the water until the drowning countdown starts. Then come out of the water and the music changes to the Sonic and Knuckles version of the boss battle. That’s how I was aware of the music before I got my hands on Sonic & Knuckles

Was 22 when this game came out and long into my addiction to video gaming, which started 10 or so years before that. Spent an obscene amount of happy hours on the Megadrive back then (as the Genesis was called HERE in the UK). Haven't played Sonic since about 2011, so I've sort of forgotton how 'infuriating' a few of the levels can be although I love the initial trilogy. I mainly come back either to watch gameplay here on YT or just to purely listen to the OST.... Definitely miss the old days of fun playing this game with friends.

It's the biggest obstacle in the game, really. No explanation and no previous parts of the level that force you to learn the mechanic. You have to figure out trial and error style. For people like me, trials and errors later, figuring out what to do would come years later.
