Actually Mario has been using the Triple Jump since Donkey Kong '94 but it's called "Double Handstand Jump" there... Actually a lot of abilities and features from DK'94 made their way into the Mario series... The Backwards Jump, the Triple Jump, the Poison Mushrooms (Mini),... DK'94 is a Game Boy remake/reboot of the original Donkey Kong arcade game... Just for your knowledge and to avoid confusion...

Not really, no. The homing attack was designed specifically to cope with a limitation provided by the switch to 3D. The triple-jump was designed to enhance platforming gameplay in general. They are not the same.
