Re Alex's question at the end about why Robotnik was capturing animals, depending on how far in the Sonic timeline it takes place and who's writing it supposedly it's a Matrix-like scenario where the animals power the robots. The ABC cartoon (aka "SatAM") and therefore Archie Comics after a certain point (maybe issue 4 or so or when the comics first showed the flashback of them rescuing Bunnie Rabbot) made it seem like he was turning some animals into robots mostly for labor. Most of this was the Western lore, though, and I never read what the official Japanese lore for Eggman's motives were.
