Phox Very good comment with some definite truth behind it. Speaking of which, some of the development files to the real game actually HAVE been obtained by an ASSEMblergames user named JollyRodger recently, who is now working hard to restore them to working order, and even port them over to modern rendering with OpenGL, which he's already in the process of doing. Along with that there are also recent re-encodings from the VHS tapes of these levels and some of the other footage made by Chris Senn himself, which are in much better quality. I could link you those if you want.

I wouldn't say Sonic was necessarily unlucky, I would say Sega is just reckless. Sonic made them what they were and still are but they constantly haphazardly throw together new game engines on him without any quality support and repeatedly tarnish his reputation. Image is EVERYTHING in advertising and you would think old Sega being so good at it from a commercial stand point wouldn't allow such risky gambles on their flagship mascot. And yet Sonic 06, Sacred Rings, Black Knight, Sonic Shuffle, Shadow the Hedgehog,Sonic Boom, etc were all allowed to see store shelves in their current states. It's idiotic from an advertising/business stand point and simply disrespectful and tarnishing to their own branding. Alllllllll that being said tho, I would adore if this game got finished and thrown on the PC as a lost title for fun. They could call it Sonic Sphere X-Treme lol.

SEGA didn't lose their magic, they lost their magical team after they all departed in 1997. Take note here: The Sonic Team wasn't called the Sonic Team, it was called SEGA Technical Institute, or STI, and that is the original crackpot team behind the good Sonic the Hedgehog. After Xtreme they all bailed and left poor Sonic in the hands of newbies whom shot green paintballs into his eyes to forcefully change color and gave him growth hormones so that he could go faster, faster, FASTER FAS....(ahem), that's about the jest of it, but Sonic went insane after Adventure 2 and his games turned to pot until he found out the truth again about who he really was (Generations) and now he's sort of coming back to his roots (Sonic Boom, lead level designer: Chris Senn that's right) but that's only if everyone else returns as well. So as of now: Sonic needs our help now more than ever.

There's something about the overall surrealism of these early Sonic X-treme fish-eye videos that I always found beautiful to watch, especially for this level and Red Sands. The game itself, from what we've seen of the prototype/alpha footage anyway, looked unappealing to play, but just watching gameplay footage of this early engine of the game makes me wonder how the final product would have turned out if released. Provided, of course, the development hell which plagued the game no longer present an issue.

I mean, I've played or looked at every build thats out there in any form and... like i have to say the game actually is pretty fun might not have been game changing when it wouldve come out but it would certainly be looked back on fondly if it did come out cause like you have to remember, this game's roots started like... right after sonic 2 came out or thereabouts, with the video game adaptations of satam that had their movesets sort of ported into xtreme, and it had a solid development team too the worst part is that with all that survived of the game it was likely about 63 or so percent done before cancellation (the sonic campaign, i mean, tails and knuckles seemingly had nothing started other than graphics), though they hadnt added collision to enemies or anything yet sadly so its basically just running around with most of the moveset for one character at your disposal but man was it a fun moveset! (i really like the world rotation gimmick, for instance, it perfectly fits the game's art and music style of sort of a vaporwave playground) so yeah tl;dr the game, even in its beta state, was a fun romp, might not have been groundbreaking had it come out, but it would definitely be regarded as a classic and a great game with likely lots of style influence on future works by various devs

I'll agree it was lacking on 3D platformers though. The closest thing the Saturn had to a great 3D platformer (that I've played) is probably the aforementioned PowerSlave, which was a first-person shooter with Egyptian mythological themes and a lot of jumping. Personally, what I think Sega should do (for teh lulz) is take Classic Sonic, put him in the same engine they used for SLW, and make Sonic Xtreme that way. You guys have to chill with the fanaticism. I don’t want to diss the team’s hard work but I have a hard time believing this would have been a hit game. The fish eye lens makes it awkward to look at and play, and the static camera makes it hard to see where you’re going in the many cases you have to move toward it. You’re basically forced to go slow. The boss engine looked much more impressive and had more potential, unfortunately it came far too late in the development cycle (I really would like to see a game made with that engine!) I think overall the sega execs were not impressed with this iteration of the game for a reason. Not that I think their opinion is worth much, but I think this game would’ve been awkward to play. Mario 64 would stand far above it. And “best sonic game ever made”? Come on.

@candyman567 The short version: There were 2 seperate teams working on it; a team for the regular levels and a team for the boss levels. The main levels went with the fisheye look and the bosses were more traditional. The two teams basically started developing two entirely different games. Sega reps checked on them. First the main game devs. They only saw an old version of the engine, thus were unimpressed. They loved the boss version, so they said to rework the whole game onto that engine.

Sonic Xtreme is little eerie, specially considering the development hell this game went through. It's sad to think about that it didn't manage made to completion despite how difficult it was for the developers. But, it's nice to think about because of the innovation this game was trying to achieve and what it could've been. This was during a time when video games were discovering the potential of 3D and you can clearly see how they were creatively trying to make it a reality. It's strange too, the idea this game had was really unusual and maybe even a little uncanny; watching this feels like a liminal space. A liminal space can be defined as to be on the precipice of something new but not quite there yet. It can be physically, emotionally, or metaphorically, so it may be a little uncomfortable to experience. In this case, it feels that way because this unique game was never released, so it's as if this part of the history of Sonic games was left missing forever. Luckily, we get to see snippets of what it was. Also this track is a vibe

Very rare footage of Sonic X-treme gameplay
@jessietherabbit201111 жыл бұрын
I think it's fair to say Galaxy took inspiration from several Sonic games. Just looking at Xtreme and Galaxy, they are very similar. There is a spherical shape to both, regardless if it affects the gameplay. Also, there's Sonic Adventure 2 like David said. And I'm noticing that Lost World uses a cylindrical shape to some levels as well, which is pretty similar to the special stages from Sonic 2, wouldn't you say? Yeah, I think we're done here...

Whenever I listen to this, it reminds me of a more happier, peaceful time in my life. And also puts the question: "Why, oh why did SEGA have to make that "Dreams" game or whatever and this at the same time? Could've been fine if they had just both worked on the same game if they knew it was gonna be this hard."

Naka tired of Sonic I suppose.
@vulcanraven97013 жыл бұрын
Elliot Savva: Naka ruined sonic, and his own career as well. He was a diva "too tired of sonic" and also threatened to quit like a bitch so the game X-treme gets canceled. Then he made the awful 2006 game (3/4 of it, leaving before it finished) and now poor sonic is a shell if himself
@elmarakovideo3 жыл бұрын
@@vulcanraven9701 Vulcan is correct. If you played the demo for Balan Wonderworld you realize Naka's career is finished. I believe Oshima and Iizuka made Nights great, so Yuji Naka was just a producer.

@danfish88 The Sega Saturn was already on its way out by the time Jam came out. Sonic Jam was made after Xtreme was already canceled. I guess they just wanted to focus on the Dreamcast without spending too much time and money on the Sonic World portion of Sonic Jam.
@phj98947 жыл бұрын
many people says this game could have been good if released, but for me it looks like the most uncomfortable platformer ever. The whole map is basically a floating platform, and the view is very limited that you'll have to move extremely slow with full of sweats in hand to try best not to fall off.
@londonjackson89867 жыл бұрын
+Hijong Park I definitely agree! I was originally sad that this was not released on the Saturn, when I found out that it existed. But looking back, I kinda glad that it was cancelled! This doesn't really look fun, this just looks like a confusing mess that wasn't built for speed at all! It lacks a well structure point A to point B design in it's level design. It also has a pointless Time Limit! I'm not saying that developers didn't try, because they obviously did! I'm just saying that it doesn't look well structure or focused! At least we got Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast!

I get what they were going for but oh man does this look like it would've been torture to play. I can see why it was canned. This kinda game coming out the same holiday season and attempting to rival Mario 64 would have been a death sentence.
@HerecomestheCalavera11 жыл бұрын
This might have been cool if it would have been released back in the mid 1990s, but I still don't think it could have competed with Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64 which was a 64-bit system

Classic80sStuff Significance of 64 bit?
@dogeymon8313 жыл бұрын
@OSDolphin - Sorry, you're mistaken. You're judging the hardware based on the software that was rushed to market (such as MetalHead). The 32X has 2 hitachi's. It might be running off a less than ideal CPU, but of course it's 32-bit. The Super Nintendo has an extensive color palette. But it required special chips in its carts to pull off polygons. And it couldn't even get those right sometimes.

@Iceeman234 A lot of developmental issues, including issues over the game engine and falling behind in schedule. The game's lead programmer got so overworked he came down with pneumonia, and when that delayed the game even further (esp. with Saturn already losing the race against the PSX and N64), Sega decided to kill the project.

This looks really fun, its a real shame that companies have to hit that holiday deadline or else. Far too many potentially great games have been altered or cancelled because of it.

Man, I'm glad this game was cancelled, this looks nauseating and hard to control(not to mention the development hell history). Not even in a early 3D platformer game way, it really looks like whoever's playing is struggling to move through tunnels and whatnot. And this kind of perspective would be more fitting for slower games, not a mainline sonic game.
@QWERTYCommander13 жыл бұрын
@SONBoomer I heard the full story. There were complications during development, which eventually left one guy to work on it himself from square one, which eventually got him so sick that it took him 5 years to recover.

@nicholasthetaylor13 жыл бұрын
@nicholasthetaylor Its just that I remember seeing transparent textured polygons in there, which would be a terrific feat to achieve on the sega saturn and the graphics (bar the sprites) seem to be a high resolution, and so I presumed that this must be a PC version, possibly created by emulating the look and feel of the game seen in promotional videos. Are the transparencies due to the capture device blurring out a stippler effect, and the same blurring could also explain the gfx looking hires?

I completely understand why this game was cancelled. This track is beautiful, and the spherical-mirror vision looks really interesting and puts your mind in a really different place, but the physics just don't look at all great. And stop comparing Sonic Lost World to this. It's nothing like this at all. This is literally just a platforming game with a warped style of vision. No tubular worlds. Now, signing off.
@Andrewsafb719 жыл бұрын
+[DZ]Farouk Derbali No, that's not true at all about the Saturn "running out of time." The game was being developed on the Sega 32x before then and the developers decided to make the game for Sega's next-gen console at the time. Which ended up being the Saturn which hadn't even been released yet. Dumbass.
