I'd beg to disagree. While I think it's very cool this game exists, it definitely has some things that need to be changed in the future. In addition to what you've already said, the bridge in Jade Gully that takes you to the goal sign doesn't work and you have to make a blind jump, so if you don't know where the level end is you have no chance of finishing it. The gravity mechanic (not shown in this video) is very finicky to use and disrupts the flow worse then the SA1 light speed dash. There is no death barrier, so if you fall off the level you're softlocked and you have to restart. And last but not least, the Nack boss fight absolutely sucks to play, which is a shame because it could be really cool.

It's impressive to see this running for real after so many attempts at recreating it, specially from a technical point of view. That said, I'm starting to understand why the directives back then took a look at the test footage they were presented and went "nope, you guys redo the main levels on that boss engine or we're hiring another team to take over this project", it just looks awkward to play. I imagine the main problem is that the level design and gameplay quite simply don't jam with the fish eye lens graphics, would be interesting to see what can be done with a wholly original level that better fits what's there.

@SoylentGreen "Please know the story before you try to school others" said the person that talks about alternate timelines on everyone's behalf as if they were facts. People forget that it was a rough demo, but even so and based on comment sections about it, I'd say it would've been 50/50, but at least it would've been something. It isn't that much visually and control-wise quirkier than Mario Galaxy, a game which concept was yoinked from this very Sonic game (as usual with Mario games), so, it was good enough for a quite later highly praised full game based on this rough demo, even though wall and ceiling-walking isn't shown much there. It's usually weak stomach soyboys and Mario fanboys on alts with no pfp's that complain about it, despite of what it inspired.

@brandonkays30052 жыл бұрын
it might seem like blasphemy to all the people who fantasize about 'what could have been', but it really is a pretty bad concept for sonic. the entire gimmick of sonic the hedgehog is going fast. you can't "go fast" when you can't see more than 4 inches in front of you. this concept would be much better suited for something like a mario game, but for sonic it just seems really silly. the worst part is that you have no sense of where you are in the level or where you're going to end up when you just blindly take a leap of faith. as much as i hold animosity towards yuji naka and sega of japan for not being more supportive of STI during the development of x-treme they ultimately probably made the right call by pulling the plug on this. i just can't see it having gone over very well with people when it came out and likely would not have been the ace in the hole they would have needed to boost saturn sales.
@brandonkays30052 жыл бұрын
@sk i am well aware, but the fish-eye concept was still in implementation long before they ever even had the idea to use the nights engine. that was a "late stage" decision that was made after they were well beyond the concept phase of the game. the jade gully tech demo that was rendered in the nights engine was mostly used to show off what they would gain by utilizing the engine but it wouldn't have fundamentally altered the bizarre style they were going for. i still think naka is a dick for what he did, but i truly believe that usage of the nights engine wouldn't have made any difference in how this game would have turned out.

I'm with the other people in the comments about the music and sound effects-- it shouldn't be using menu sfx/music/design cues from Sonic Heroes/Sonic Adventure. Also for the loading screen I would've actually just stuck with the loading screen that was in the Nights Sonic Xtreme prototype (which has been out for a while now). Just to keep it true to the original content that they had as much as possible. Other than that, a valiant effort. Great work on this! :)

As a fan demo, this is some next level thing. It's awesome having the Saturn homebrew scene so active. The engine looks cool and very solid. The Sonic sprite design is a bit dated (pre-rendered graphics got old fast) but overall very impressive work at least as a concept. It obviously needs countless hours of hard work, level design and planning, new music and better sound effects. Also, the platforming shouldn't be this way, blind jumps aren't fun at all. It needs a big zone for Sonic to run and explore freely without the fear of falling everywhere. If done right, could be very interesting.

Okay everything looking real good the only thing that should be added completely new but most important thing is giving Sonic speed because he appears slow. Maybe some background tricks using those 7 layers on vdp2 giving it like light speed mode and everything in the background appears to be in slow motion. Contact me for ideas and a better explanation if you. Use a muti-layer background to create slow motion so Sonic and the boss in boss mode or anything that is moving appears to be moving faster. Alot faster like Sonic . U might get a deal listening to me

Not a bad job, what bugs me about Xtremes concept is that there’s almost no flow to the stages, like the Sonic games that came before it have a flow to them, this spherical design while in concept is kind of cool, I can see why it was cancelled and never revisited. It would probably work if it were like Secret Rings or Black Knight, in a more on-rails Sonic style game instead of having the freely controlling Sonic like this. That’s not to say they couldn’t have you reach secret areas or find secret items and stuff, on-rails would suit this concept a lot better in my opinion.

I think that I see why they decided to go on another direction, that is supposed to be a fast pacing game, but here only part of the platforms are loaded, so you have to go step by step, also the camera kind of limits the options for a level design, I think that it may have worked on better hardware, something that could keep bigger parts visible, maybe doing the same than on fzero and really limit thee detail of the textures, maybe using colored triangles like on star fox.

It would not, just like Sonic R did not. "X-treme would kill the franchise" is a slogan Nakabots throw around because they have no real reason to hate on a game that can be disregarded. Still admit X-Treme is not for me and I can't watch more of ten seconds before getting nauseous.

Sega should have tried a 2.5d like pandemonium instead of 3D

As cool as this is, it really convinces me that this fisheye 3D plat concept couldn't have saved the Saturn or competed with the other flagship platformers of the time. This would have required some masterful level design in order for it to work, to be honest. Awesome work though! The boss fight is a whole different thing, that looks like it could have worked for real.

Seeing a lot of the same: amazing, freaking AMAZING; but stick with music/sfx from the era, please!

I salute the performance of having recreated it's demo from spare parts. but my feeling is that it doesn't look fun to play at all. angel jump, strange perspective, and where is the speed? which makes sonic R an episode much more worthy of representing the mascot on Sega saturn.
