This is what the Anniversary Mode in Sonic Origins should have been, whilst the Classic Mode could've been the original sprites, with a toggleable 16:9 or 4:3 option

This is what Classic Sonic should be going forward, HD sprites of the traditional 2D Genesis Sonic aesthetic. This was pretty much the only recognizable art direction Sonic ever had, and it would do a lot to differentiate Sonic and build greater brand identity. Mario has ALWAYS understood this.

I remember seeing the discussions about this on Sonic Retro. The artists would have endless discussions on how to properly display the graphics in HD. They painstakingly recreated and reinterpreted the art to get the final result. Looks amazing and their effort paid off. I love the Sonic community.

I've always wanted a remake trilogy like this. Sega probably won't ever do that though. They'll just go for either recreating the sprite style like the Christian Whitehead remakes or make it 3D with 3D "classic Sonic" like Sonic Superstars. I really LOVE this style.
