Well I can share that I read somewhere that Sonic will not even have kids and have a married life...as in..having a normal life, like having a family... it could be funny that Sonic only will slow down when he feelz the age hitting him, and slowing down...so at that phase I can see that Sonic might finally give Amy her chance to be with him, and she gladly will wait for him, the time he needs until he is ready to be with her. So I can tell this could be a most canon act we can get? lol But I can tell that since the SEGA by making a fact Sonic never having kids..does that mean Sonic will be like Peter Pan or Ash? @Miles Theodore that's because she barely did anything in Forces, much like the other characters. Outside of the final charge against Infinite's phantom army, all she was say a few lines and stand about in the background. Still it could have been worse, like being stuck having to act weak to try and make a faker look stronger than what he actually is. Tails deserved better than that. In fact everyone did. Instead of being sidelined for a couple of mutes with barely enough personality to fill a sandwich between them, Sonic's actual friends should have been playable, because its been what, 15 years now since 06? And despite its problems, if the outsourced Boom could feature Amy, Knux and Miles playable again in 3D I really don't know why they weren't in Forces.

Well considering that Sally got Thanosed out of existance after the Archie comic stoped...then yes it is possible. However I don’t think Sonic still likes Amy to the point of a relationship. He does have a soft spot for her but I don’t think it has developed past that yet. Maybe in the future, but not now. In the Boom universe it would have been much more possible since there seemed to be more of a chemistry between the 2, but main game universe not yet...

I always remember the episode of Sonic X where Amy made Sonic a shell bracelet to help him get over the anxiety of being in the ocean and it got broken by Eggman’s minion, then Sonic secretly managed to repair it again and wore it at the end of the episode, that always kinda indicated some form of affection to me!

You were correct. Watch the ending of Sonic X episode 52 in the original Japanese (or better yet, the French dub). You'll be pleasantly surprised. The ending of episode 76 is notable, as well. Also, fun fact: both episode 9 (the one where Amy gives Sonic the bracelet) and episode 76 were written by Kiyoko Yoshimura, who also wrote Sonic Unleashed and co-wrote Sonic '06.

I’ve been in a lot of fandoms before, and I find that I either leave because of all the toxic shippers or I just get bored and mostly it’s because of toxic shippers. I pledge to not ship as much people anymore but I can deal with relationships, to me Sonamy is the best and it isn’t the worst, Amy is just a bit to clingy and when I say a bit I mean a lot, it doesn’t make much sense but also does give some points, but I prefer them close friends, people have opinions tho:/

Actually, according to one of the Sega's book about the characters, he *does* love her in secret, but he's to shy about it to even confess it. And canonically talking, there's been tons of time when Sonic annoy-flirt with her (Yes, Boom Sonic) and in games he "acts" indifferently towards her to pretend he's not interested, but it's his shyness.

There are multiple factors into why Sonic won't act on his feelings. 1) Amy's energy: when Amy gets into the scene first, she's very energetic towards him. Sonic is clearly uncomfortable with that. When she calms down, however, Sonic engages more with Amy. 2) Sonic's value of freedom: Sonic likes to be free, but Amy's presence seems seems to be encroaching on that. If Sonic comes to the realization that a relationship with Amy will minimally encroach on his freedom, he may engage. 3) Eggman's danger: When Sonic first met Amy, she was taken by one of Eggman's robots (Metal). She had been held hostage multiple times by Eggman, because he wanted to get to Sonic. Sonic knows this and has seen some significant deaths near others. Most notably, Maria, close to Shadow. Sonic doesn't want a death happening close to him, let alone Amy. He absolutely doesn't want Amy to get hurt and thus leaving him with an emotional baggage. Engaging in a relationship with Amy will paint a massive target on her back and he knows that. So, for Amy's sake and his own, he keeps and appropriate distance to her, even if he wants to be closer to Amy.

@SuperstarGalaxy 127 Amy can be a VERY scary force to be reckoned with... I remember a scene from Sonic X where she absolutely crushed one of Eggman's robots (mind you, that robot was probably 10 times her own size). She kinda scares Sonic in that one scene, too as I can remember. ( ಠ  ͟ʖ ಠ ) In her earlier days, she was seen more as a damsel in distress like Princess Peach, but as time kinda strolled on its merry way, she kinda changed a little, and she wasn't really a damsel in distress anymore. :Y And even though I hate the Boom era and am glad it got canceled. In Boom, she was a lot more of the "woman character", she acted more mature there and could handle herself better.

I feel like, SonAmy is super toned down in the English games. However, In Japan, they’re kinda a thing. There are so many things that we don’t completely understand about their character and relationship, because in America everything is super toned down. Consider them a Pucca x Garu situation. Garu does like Pucca, but he’s very shy about it. There are moments when he’s showing his feelings in the show. Same goes for Sonic. I’m sure Sonic does have romantic feelings for Amy, but he’s probably too shy, or doesn’t really know how to act on it. He did accept a date offer from Amy in Unleashed and actually went through with it in the Black Knight game

Speaking as someone who does enjoy SonAmy, I think a good argument could be made for both sides. You could easily make an argument that Sonic only sees Amy as a friend, and gets quite annoyed when she starts making advances. But there’s also several instances where you can make an argument that he might have some deeper feelings for her. Personally I enjoy the ambiguousness of the relationship. It allows the audience to make their own conclusions. If you think sonic should remain an adventurer who doesn’t need romance, you can interpret it as that. While at the same time if you like the idea of sonic having a significant other you can interpret it that way.

There’s a bunch of instances but those same instances are also ambiguous. Such as in this video where the uploaded says things about choosing to date Any or choosing Amy or Elise. In which case I disagree that he has to like Any for it to be an option.... since.... you know.... it’s an option. It kinda means the same thing whether he likes her or not. It means we don’t know and the player gets to choose in case they like shipping or if they don’t. She’s included with Elise because it’s freakin Amy and it’s already established she likes him. So it’d be weird to leave her out. But I also don’t really see a romance developing with Elise throughout the game unless you count Amy saying she’s waiting for a guy.... but that’s Amy saying that. (Amy doesn’t dictate Sonic’s feelings, ppl. Not feelings for her or for Elise. lol) There’s the WereHog thing, where he DOES react by pulling back his head. And then reaches for her because he’s sad that he’s unrecognizable even by the girl who’s obsessed with him. He was supposed to go on a date with her in Black Knight but I’m pretty sure we’ve seen him throw her a bone before just to be nice. Even after she runs off into Twinkle Park he says she’s a pain (while he’s alone and no one is around to hear it). He looks bashful when she compliments him in Generations but he’s bashful when anyone praised him. Such as the opening of Secret Rings. So I guess almost all instances used to say he liked her are also instances to say he doesn’t.

I don’t think that a relationship with her would slow him down. In a game, Amy states that she wants to be like Sonic, and she has trained to better herself and achieve that as stated in Sonic Battle ( hence why she grew faster and stronger over time ). She has gone so far as to build up her own Team ( Team Rose ) and, in Sonic Adventure 1, she missed Sonic also because of the adventuring ( directly mentioned ). If anything, Amy could easily be a complement to Sonic in his adventures. She had demonstrated to be the emphatic one of the cast in both Sonic Adventure 1 ( Helping Gamma and saving him from Sonic and helping the Flickie, which Sonic ignored ) and Sonic Adventure 2 ( changing Shadow’s world view ). So, if Tails can go with Sonic as his best friend and not hold him back, I don’t see why Amy can’t go with him as his girlfriend and not hold him back. Let’s not forget that the girl saved Sonic’s life from Silver in Sonic 2006 and was the one who rescued him from Prison Island in Sonic Adventure 2. The potential for it to work is there. It’s only a matter of willingness to try.

That's a good character analysis. As for whether SEGA would ever do it: they've attempted to give Sonic a serious love interest twice before, but Sonic X-Treme was never released, and Sonic '06 was, well... Sonic '06. The point is, if the franchise were to become as successful as it was when both of those games were being made, it's conceivable that SEGA would be willing to take that risk again, and it would make far more sense to use a pre-existing and fairly popular character (like Amy) as opposed to someone new. Only time will tell.

Let's not forget that in IDW she tells him that she doesn't want to change him because that's what she likes about him. If I would describe how their relationship could be... I'd be a fighting duo that kicks bad guys butt, combining with their abilities (I imagine that in each combo they do, they put titles to make the dynamic even more fun like they did with the "croquette bomb") and are who know how to complement their taunts and jokes against Eggman or any random villain. They could be poetry in motion and I think Amy would be that person who makes Sonic focus. A healthy, fun, dynamic, innocent and pure couple. Not all couples should fall into the typical romantic affection clichés, if they had affection it would only be hugs, the compression they have for each other, super dynamic subtle and natural talks, without commitments and without big revelations, they are just a couple with just little moments and that's it. At least I tell you that for my part, I hate love triangles, at least as many media represent it, especially in the section of movies and series for teenagers, so I do not come here as a healthy fan of SonAmy to hate other ships, to force them to be a couple and much less force them to kiss each other or do those stereotypical overwhelming things that we are used to seeing as a society. I'm not going to that because as humans, we all live differently, so it happens in the dynamics of couples. The potential looks clear. As long as Amy doesn't act like his fangirl and he doesn't act like a sucker, they can really have good chemistry.... BUT that is already SEGA's decision.

I agree with the rest of what you said, however--the only love triangle action in this series should involve Knuckles, Rouge and Shadow. EDIT: So, thanks to IDW, the hand-holding is back (and canonical, apparently). And they hugged each other at the end of Frontiers (I can't be the only one who hopes that becomes a recurring thing).

I always hear people saying things like "Sonic isn't shy" "he will never be shy" "that isn't his thing" "he's a very vocal and confident guy and he just wouldn't". Yes, I get it, Sonic is like the exact opposite of shy. But I think when it comes to the topic of romance or love he just gets shy because that isn't his thing and he just isn't used to it. SEGA themselves literally stated that he does love her secretly but wouldn't admit it, because he's too shy about it. I found this on the SonAmy channel, and it stated; “Naoto Ohshima is Sonic’s and Amy’s co-creator and one of the founding fathers of Sonic Team. He stated on Twitter that he loves Sonamy and explained that Sonic is immature with a boy’s heart. He concluded his post by saying that Sonic would choose Amy Rose if he matures with an adult heart”. So yeah. Is SonAmy canon? No. Like the video had stated. But they BOTH do indeed have feelings for each other. Amy's really expressive and vocal about hers, and Sonic just closets his. Will SonAmy be canon? I doubt it. But let's be honest, Amy is the closest and only one to being a love interest for Sonic.

I think you're spot on. Apparently, there's a widespread misconception that people who are confident in certain situations must therefore act that way all the time. It seems that Sonic is (with some exceptions) embarrassed and slightly intimidated by female attention. It's more pronounced with Amy because she's so aggressive, but it's not unique to her. He was similarly awkward towards Elise early on in Sonic '06, gradually becoming more comfortable with her over the course of his story. There's also a scene in episode 22 of Sonic X (which was removed from the English dub) where Sonic meets two geishas who start fawning over him, and he blushes, much like Knuckles usually does when Rouge hits on him. It's really quite endearing, not to mention relatable for many teenage boys. (I'd like to say that the reason we don't see this behavior as much in recent media is because he's starting to mature and gaining more confidence, but the truth is probably that the people running the franchise these days didn't do their research and don't realize he's supposed to be this way.)

In Sonic Frontiers Sonic says “Wish we were sharing an umbrella Amy.” Which I think is really sweet and can be seen as both platonic and romantic. To be honest I’m fine with both because I see Sonic and Amy as being friends with crushes on each other. I also found this on the Internet. Fun fact: Sharing an umbrella as a couple in Japan is considered a romantic expression, and teens often draw an umbrella with their name and the name of their crush, the way one would in a heart. Google also says: 相合傘 has a strong romantic implication, stemming in part from a play on words. The first two characters are pronounced あい (ai), the same as the word 愛 あい (ai, “love”), and thus the connotation is that both people under the umbrella are in love. The more you know. 💙💖

That line becomes even sweeter when you remember that, at that point in the story, Amy's body was still trapped in Cyberspace, so getting rained on wasn't a concern for her. This means that either Sonic just wanted to feel close to her, or he was specifically imagining a situation where Amy wasn't trapped and was getting rained on so he could come along and offer her an umbrella to share. (The second interpretation, in particular, gives off distinct "teenage boy daydreaming about his crush" vibes, and the slightly different phrasing in the Japanese version of the game seems to lean towards it.) In general, it seemed like Frontiers was trying to explore the unique relationships Sonic has with each of his friends: Tails is the friend who he sees as a younger brother, Knuckles is the friend who is also a rival, and Amy is the friend he has a crush on (and, by the end of the story, Sage is the friend who is also his archenemy's daughter).

Sega wanted to create a love interest but one that doesn't contradict Sonic as a character, that idea came in the form of Amy, instead of Sonic falling for her directly, Amy would have to try hard to get his love (or in other words, be worthy of it), which is what she was doing ever since her introduction. Her entire character is not just to crush on Sonic but it's a part of it, she's go-getter, cheerful, does not give up, wants to help others, and a whole lot of etcetera.

My theory; Sonic does like Amy. But he also understands that being in a relationship means having to slow down, which Sonic doesn't want to do. Sonic pushing Amy away has, at this point, almost become a bit of an in-joke among the cast. So I don't think him doing that is evidence of him disliking her. The IDW Comics are great evidence of this. Her portrayal in the IDW Comics is canon, as SEGA is the one giving Ian the guidelines with which to follow (hence why Shadow is written so... awkwardly, Ian is working within SEGA's awkward guidelines). And in the comic, Sonic is actually displaying mild flirting with Amy, now that he's realised she can somewhat keep up with him. He's starting to see that being in a relationship with Amy specifically might not require him to slow down.

I think a perfect example of Sonic liking Amy is evident in Sonic X. 1. When Sonic was against Amy in the tournament, He didn't want to hurt Amy. He even asked Chris to say something that'll get her to attack him. 2. In the last season when they had a party, Amy's dress was so good that it captivated Sonic. Even though he said she looks alright, he still couldn't take his eyes off her. 3. When Amy was in the water after destroying Eggman's robot, Sonic risked his life to save her even though he couldn't swim. Not to mention, he actually took her lucky charms even though Amy thought Sonic didn't have it. These 3 examples alone shows why Sonic actually does like Amy but like Evan said, he's just too shy to actually tell her. I honestly compare them to Rouge and Knuckles because even though Knuckles doesn't really love Rouge like that, he still cares for her well being and Rouge appreciates it. The best example is Sonic Forces where Rouge pushes Knuckles but Knuckles never got angry at her. You could say he became mature but then again he's still gullible, just somehow worse lol.

Well, for your first example it could be argued that Sonic probably wouldn't have wanted to fight _anyone_ who wasn't fighting back, since that wouldn't be fair. What stood out to me more about that scene is how he openly gets angry when Eggman shoots at him and almost hits Amy instead (he's usually more restrained than that). The other two examples are pretty solid, though, and there are some other scenes like that in Sonic X (episodes 52 and 76 come to mind). And I agree that there are definitely parallels between Sonic and Amy's dynamic and Knuckles and Rouge's, though I would point out that whether or not Knuckles loves Rouge romantically, he does find her physically attractive (in the song "Kick the Rock" from Sonic Adventure 2, he calls her "sexy and smooth" and says he's "feelin' her in mysterious ways"). Then again, pretty much all the guys think Rouge is hot (including Sonic, though he's more subtle about it than most).

I actually agree with you. Despite being a SonAmy fan, I don't think they would be in a relationship because, like you said, it would potentially slow him down and he's just too impatient and "fast" for that kind of thing. However, just because he doesn't want a relationship now, doesn't mean he doesn't want one in the future. Keep in mind that Sonic is 15 and Amy is 12. They are too young really to actually be together, considering the fact that Amy isn't even a teenager. However, if SEGA actually eventually does age them, then a potential relationship could be possible. Since they are young, and he is qutie free spirited, it makes sense. He has his whole life ahead of him and when he does settle down eventually, maybe a relationship is possible.

I really do believe that deep down, Sonic does love Amy. The examples shown are admittedly somewhat few, but VERY significant. I mean Amy being described as his long-time love is great enough indication. So, just out of curiosity, I looked up what happens in Sonic '06 if you have Sonic choose Elise in the Trial of Love instead of Amy. If you do, the priest says "I won't comment on the princess. It takes courage to choose one who carries the weight of the world on her shoulders." I think Sonic is a character that loves Amy, but is not only a bit shy about it and grew to love her with time, he's also a bit scared, he as an inner conflict with himself, he knows he can't sit still, he knows he'll always be running around on adventures, being in a relationship with Amy wouldn't really slow him down since she as managed to keep up with his speed somewhat, i think what he really is afraid of is that at some point, one of his adventures will be his last and hell, Sonic as died in a few adventures or come really close to it. Sonic as probably seen that possibility and refuses to even consider the possibility to date her so in the occasion of going adventuring Amy doesn't become hurt for it as she as been more understanding of that by being his friend and in the occasion of him dying, it'd hurt a lot, but not as much as if he took the time to make long date nights and put the emotional ring on Amy's heart. Sonic does love Amy but he's afraid of being the reason of her pain even if keeping her away hurts him. In Unleashed when Amy ran away from him, i don't think that was a reaction of someone sad she left, but more of a reaction of what would happen if she was looking for the other guy, if Sonic finally managed to make Amy uninterested and she was now going on dates with someone, the reaction for me is something that says it all in that he loves her but is too afraid to show it.

I truly believe that Sonic has feelings for Amy. Besides the tumblr excerpt that was mentioned, There’s another article I read that I forgot where it’s from but it also confirmed that Sonic indeed has feelings for Amy but is just shy/not showy about it. No matter the circumstance though, it’s clear that Sonic has a soft spot for Amy & he’s said time & time again that she’s one of his best friends. Forget Sonic Boom, because their counterparts already have mutual feelings for each other & it’s in another universe. But there’s more than enough evidence that Sonic thinks of Amy as more than just a friend, such as SA2, the Riders series, 06, Unleashed, Black Knight, Lost World, the post Super Genesis Wave in the Archie comics, IDW, & arguably most of all in Sonic X. Lately, the two have especially had a more flirtatious kind of friendship on both sides, & Sonic doesn’t seem to get embarrassed or flustered around Amy as much if not anymore. I have a theory that the reason why Sonic distances himself from Amy isn’t because he wants to focus on adventure or that she’ll slow him down, but because Eggman is always after him, & that if he commits himself to Amy, she might become a second target for Eggman, & Sonic doesn’t want to put someone he cares about in danger. At the moment, I consider Sonamy semi-canon. I doubt that they’ll have a full fledged relationship any time soon because of SEGA’s current mandates. Only time will tell I guess. Sonic's feelings for Amy have been confirmed at least twice before: in the Sonic Adventure 2 Strategy Guide (which may or may not be accurate, since it was published by Prima Games, but is notable nonetheless), and by a representative of Sonic Team in Disney Adventures magazine (March 2005 issue). So, it seems that has been the intended interpretation since at least the so-called Dark Age, if not earlier. I can only presume that the handful of games where Sonic appears to genuinely dislike her (with Sonic Rush and Sonic Free Riders being the worst offenders in my opinion) were simply the result of bad writing, like Tails being a coward in Sonic Forces. Incidentally, it was watching Sonic X as a teenager that made me a SonAmy shipper (specifically, the original Japanese version, where they even have their own love song).

After playing through some of Kronos Island in Sonic Frontiers, I am getting the strong impression that Sonic has some feelings for Amy, especially since Sonic Team made Amy competent again after many years as well as a lot more mature. There is a questline involving Amy that involves a "love" (i.e. witnessed more in the sense of Romeo and Juliet playing out) story. Now, Sonic, as well as returning Sonic fans, is expecting to Amy to go on a tangent about her love for him, saying something about marriage, trying to randomly hug him, or being obviously flirtatious...but it never happens. In addition, Sonic seems to be a bit surprised given how he talks nervously sometimes to her for some moments (i.e. more of a blink and you may miss it). Know what the best part of it is? This is never bluntly addressed, just implied.

I’ve thought about Sonamy in Sonic and the Black Knight for so long! If I remember correctly, a game manual explicitly said that Sonic was waiting on Amy before being summoned. So not only was he on a date, he got there first. And at the end of the game, where Amy is accusing him of lying, she’s mad at him for fully missing the date. But Sonic doesn’t deny that they had planned a date together. So regardless of if Sonic actually got sent to Camelot which caused him to miss it, or it was just a story he thought of as an excuse for being late, he clearly accepts that it was a date. And like, multiple sources do point to Amy being one of Sonic’s closest friends, probably just behind Tails.

You are correct, the manual does indeed confirm that he was waiting for Amy. And Sonic was definitely telling the truth about being sent to Camelot (while he's talking to Amy, we see the book about King Arthur and the title magically changes to _Sonic and the Black Knight_ ). Also, here's an amusing observation: remember when he saw the Lady of the Lake and was about to run away until he realized that she wasn't Amy? At first, that would seem to indicate that he doesn't like Amy, but when you see the ending cutscene, you realize it was actually because he expected Amy to be pissed off at him for missing their date (which she was). Bonus points because Shiro Maekawa wrote Black Knight, and he was the one who started the "Sonic runs from Amy" cliche in the first place (in Sonic Heroes). I think he was making fun of his own writing!

I love how you say that it is literally up to us as the fans whether SonAmy is cannon. In my head-cannon, Amy likes Sonic, but she has learned to entertain interests other than constantly chasing him down with unwanted affection. Sonic on the other hand respects her for growing as a person, knows very well that she likes him, and currently cares more about his own inflated ego than... girls. In real life, it is totally legit to be an 'action couple', see the world together, etc., so imo a Sonamy relationship could still be fun and cool for both parties, but neither of them are mature enough to realize that yet. They're still at the age when... "Traitor. Girls are the enemy!"

I'm late to this conversation but here are my two cents as a casual Sonic fan who became invested because I liked the movie and am looking forward to the sequel this year. Does Sonic like Amy? Yes. He doesn't outright tell her he doesn't like her which is the most obvious and plain way of communicating that with her. He pushes her away yes, and sometimes he runs away from her literally. I believe that Sonic did NOT like Amy at first, but in time he did grow to admire her persistence and growing strength/skills. She didn't always have a hammer or kick ass, that happened over time. Based off the games I would say he has grown to like her, but he isn't sure if he loves her because he certainly doesn't display it in the way she does. That can alter his perception of love, any examples of a couple in love that he knows are usually families that have settled in one spot. That is not Sonic... yet. Sonic is still young, he still enjoys running off to fight, to fill his life with adventure, to rescue people and be the hero. But Amy has been keeping up, she's adapted too. She isn't just chasing over Sonic, she's becoming her own person. She has her own goals, her own responsibilities, and her own movement (lol). It's rather funny that now that Amy isn't chasing after Sonic as much and you could potentially view it as her moving on from a childish crush, THAT is what grabbed Sonic's attention 🤣 because now he is the one who reaches out to her for help or advice or just for a friendly greeting. I wouldn't be surprised if he misses her advances towards him and now he feels the need to offer something back to her, as if to make sure whether if she still has feelings for him or not. I think Sonic likes Amy, I think he isn't sure if he loves Amy, but it's cute that their relationship has grown from a one sided crush to a mutual friendship to a more respectable relationship between the two. They're not a couple, but there is a reason why Sonamy exists. I'm quite certain that once Sonic feels like he's ready to settle that is when he decides to stay with her and let her catch him at last. But that's just a fan sharing his own perspective, maybe it's silly or it would never happen. I don't know, but what they have going on right now is quite adorable. It's funny how fans couldn't stand Amy at first but are now following Amy as they've grown fond of her. I'd like to think Sonic feels the same way as well :)

Another few things to add to this analysis: In two of the Sonic Twitter Takeovers, Sonic's been asked questions about Amy, and he hesitates to even give a full answer. The first time, he was saved from answering the question by stopping Eggman from looking at a file called Sonadow, and the second time he bailed until the next question. Yeah, I know it's probably not canon to the primary timeline, but their isn't anything saying these traits don't apply to the characters canonically.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that in a technically official piece of Sonic media (the third Twitter Takeover), Infinite attempted to get even with Sonic and Shadow by e-mailing them (what was implied to be) gay porn of themselves? I think SonAmy is as canon as Sega will let it get - that they'll hint at it as a possible ship, without ever committing officially for as long as possible. Kind of like how Nintendo handles Zelink - it's by far the most popular ship in the LoZ fandom, to the point of some people just assuming it's official, yet they deliberately leave it ambiguous in all but a few instances. Personally, I would like to see more romantic developments, as I'm a sucker for those types of interpersonal changes, but I know that's unlikely - if they ever do make it official, it would likely be at the "end" of the story/franchise (ex: the final issue of a comic series). That being said, the most likely candidate for an "official SonAmy ship" at this point is the movies - they have to end at some point and are already considered their own canon. If they want to develop Sonic's character at the same trajectory that they have been, by showing him get older and more mature as the movies progress, they'll likely eventually want to give him a love interest... and Amy is the obvious choice.

My favorite interaction between Sonic and Amy comes from Sonic Unleashed where Amy mistakes the werehog for sonic not knowing that he's sonic. Sonic makes a decision to not tell her its him even though he looks like he's on the verge of it before she runs away. Its clear that he's upset with his current werehog situation and I think Amy being the one to make him upset about it sums up the relationship perfectly. I think that shows that Sonic does have feelings for her, but he's been too shy to open up about it.

There was a difference between how he talked to Tails (confident, normal, friendly - there are no prolonged pauses) and how he spoken to Amy (thoughtful, softer, ambiguous.).

I never said he said it out of love, I just said there was a *difference* between Sonic's words and his delivery of them (especially in the Japanese version where the pause is longer.). Both the US and JP versions feature Sonic pausing for a bit before telling Amy to take care with his voice being noticably softer. He never does this with Tails regardless of the version. I am not saying Sonic was about to confess his ever dying love or this specifically means he's head over heels in love with her lol. I just pointed out what happened. Take that as you will. 🤷‍♀️

While I think SEGA's inconsistent story telling is getting to all of us, I think it's canon in some stories and in some maybe not, depending on the writer of course. Also, Amy seems to be more independent now, which means that SEGA is starting to go through some major character arcs with the Sonic cast. Perhaps they're trying to get Sonamy in the fray because fans want it, and of course, they aren't known to only stick to their own thing. I mean, we had a custom character and Sonic Mania in the same year. I see this as a great possibility and one that I would bet money on. Of course, SEGA could always change their minds. However, if Amy is more independent, then a relationship between them could work as long as it's not too mushy and stuff. Also, c'mon people. Blue hedgehog, pink hedgehog? Damsel in distress? It can't be just "friendship". I mean, we already have it confirmed that he's just too shy to admit his feelings, as stated in a Disney magazine AND in a Sonic Twitter takeover. Also, in a description of an Amy Rose hoodie for her Sonic CD anniversary, she is called, and I quote, "Sonic's girlfriend" (of course, this is most likely a mistake, but it is also showing that it is of possibility and most likely going through the minds of those at SEGA). The evidence is in the sand, take it or leave it, but SEGA will most likely try it as they do with a lot of crazy ideas for the same hedgehog who went and became a teacher for Sonic's Schoolhouse. Again, this ship may exist just to keep Sonamy fans waiting and wanting more shipping scenes, so making it canon could be bad on a business standpoint because the Sonamy fans would get what they want and then probably get bored with it. Anything is possible, I mean. Sonic Mania people. SONIC MANIA HAPPENED. The 30th anniversary is coming up this June and we should expect anything! See y'all there, and please don't fight, Sonic is turning 30, so let's act civilized. And for those wondering where I stand on this, my ships change very easily and while I think Sonamy could be cute, I don't hardcore bend over for it. I keep my options open, and so does Sonic.
