Excellent review. I've been researching for a portable device to take on the road and this fits the bill. Everything else this size either relies on a computer for synthesis or has uncomfortably small controls. I can totally imagine using this on a flight--save my laptop and mobile devices for my day job. As for the price, no device comes close to feature parity and travel readiness so it's worth every penny.

It's phrases like "hardware is dying" that are batshit stupid, Christopher Smith. I've used the OP-1 for the past 2 years and have created more roundly produced, professional sounding and higher quality tracks than I ever did using a DAW, and I've been making music for over 20 years. There's a place for virtual AND hardware options; they're not mutually exclusive.

Sorry to be harsh but, most of the people commenting on this are idiots. You are judging the OP-1's price based on it's cute "Lego" looks, but it is a powerful and inspiring synth. Name one other synth out there has 8 different Synth engines, 2 Samplers, several methods of Sequencing plus a 4 Track Recorder all in a battery operated portable device? Someone said (just looking at it) that it was Unplayable... Luckily I am a highly evolved Human Being that can easily adapt, and I guess some people are not. Beautifully designed and inspiring, the perfect device to sit on the couch and just noodle away to come up with ideas, why would anyone NOT get one!? And the price is just right for what it is (you wouldn't know unless you've actually worked with it.) For me, it's just another tool in my studio that I happily use... It may look like a toy, but it's not. And as far as toys go, if you are a real musician, you can make music with anything! I seem to remember a certain David Bowie using the toy Stylophone for his "Space Oddity" song. Stop making excuses for your lack of skills people!

You can do it that way, or if you have a USB midi host (kenton or iconnect make them), then you can go midi directly to/from the OP1. I.e. it's class compliant. Also, tape, sequences, LFO, everything syncs up very nicely to incoming clock.
@hakonsoreide8 жыл бұрын
Why do people still go on about the price of this thing - even after five years? When people do, it's like they say they really want it, but they can't afford it, and then they have to annoy everyone who can afford it by going on about it being overpriced, to the point that it sounds like not only do they think it costs too much, but it makes them resent the OP-1, everything it stands for, all the music made on it, and everyone who has one. The only sensible reason for this kind of behaviour is trying to dissuade themselves from getting one. It's unusually ambivalent and no other musical instrument ever has polarised opinion this much. What's up with that? Come to think of it, many musical instruments, digital or conventional, cost more than this, but people don't usually go on about how expensive they are. It's really only the OP-1 that gets that special treatment. Must be because it looks like a cheap toy and when people realise it isn't cheap (but still think it's a toy), they conclude it's overpriced. Most who actually own one seem to go on about how it's one of the best purchases they ever made, and not a single one of them, as far as I have seen, complains about the price. Oh well…

So How would you weigh in? WHich would you think preferable? Octatrack seems a go to for that glitch effects type of sound (probably the way the sequencer works with the fx) and I know there's an album by german producer Housemeister called OP-1 where that was the main tool, it's a dirty boyz noise kind of sound. Lots of tape style tempo shifts and tons of filth, but that could just be the artist's sound.

You know what.. forget the military grade parts and cnc aluminum, put in some decent consumer grade ones, put in an LCD instead of the AMOLED, drop the internal battery and knock 500 eruos off the price... There you go, the OP-2. Seriously, I appreciate the design overkill, but no at 790 euros... it`s a tiny synth gadget.. not a full blown Korg or Moog.
@richardfinch22966 жыл бұрын
All of these comments were from years ago but I'm about to get one so I think that justifies commenting now. For $900 I think the price is well worth it. I don't think it's too crazy. I think it could have been a little bit cheaper but for as much as this thing can do and for as small as it is it's definitely worth it. It's got 8 synthesizer engines built in a sequencer and so much more. It's something you can make a full song on or even a bunch of full songs. Plus if you have to go somewhere you can bring it with you in case you have an idea for your song or hear sound that you want to sample out in the world. It's really a cool device for making music and even though it is pretty expensive I think it's worth it

Just call and bargain, I literally asked them if they "can do better" after they proposed their initial price. After going back and forth to confirm with the supervisor the salesman met me half way. speaking of coupons, musiciansfriend does have 15% off right now, thats $765 for the op-1. depending on where you are you might be eligible to get it tax free too.

Dear Sonic State, thank you so much for your information- I'm trying to understand how this thing works- I'm wondering, after making a piece (using the 4 different track lines), can you store this 'piece' on the Op-1 and use it during performance (with an (acoustic) instrument) as a kind of accompaniment? Or, is this impossible and do you need to bring your 'tracks' on the computer? As I understand, the computer safes it as '4 different tracks' - is it possible to load this 4 different tracks as 'one piece' or do you need to use a 'audio program' and rebuild your composition on the pc? Thank you so much for making this more clear... *

this cute little thing has so much potential, but they really shot themselves in the foot with some terrible, apple-like design choices, that cater more to hipsters, than to serious musicians. :/ midi I/O only via usb (are you kidding me?), very poor stand alone connectivity options. no 12V power input, a build in battery that wont last 5 years, and replacement batteries are not available. a cnc shaped unibody certainly gives it a nice durable feel, but has no advantages, unless you plan to throw it around, and adds a lot to the already steep price. so do high end switches, that will certainly work perfectly, untill the battery goes up in flames at some point in the future. in theory a 9,5/10! in practice ... not so much
@MrAzflyman9 жыл бұрын
Cuda FX How long have you been into music? And not know that Apple products have been in music production for the last 20-30 years or so? That is like saying Pro Tools is not a professional production software. If I am not mistaken Apple has been around a bit longer than "Hipsters". So the "Apple design choices" statement is just not very bright. Why don't you do a bit of research into the non-professional musicians that use these like Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode I am not sure what your beef is with Midi via USB it but it sure works for all those with laptops that use them for controllers, and if you had one of these in your hands, which I can tell you have never had the experience, you would know that because of the compact design there is no place for a Midi in, out, or pass through. No need for a 12v power input, or did you miss that it will run for 16 hours on a charge? Within a year there will be someone on KZbin with a vid on how to change the battery (if there is not one already) so no big deal there. It easy to tell you are speaking as one who has never had the pleasure of spending any time with the OP1. Believe me, a long domestic or transatlantic flight with the OP1 and a ultra-book and you don't even know 6 or 7 hours has past and that down time became very productive. Why don't you live with one for at least a few weeks (remember Guitar Center has a 30 day return policy) before you make statements talking crap about something which you have no personal knowledge. And yes, I do have one, and its a fantastic bit of kit.

BTW, its not a fancy life working your way through college, which I did, but if you don't want to say "would you like fries with that?" its something you better think about my friend.

no one brought up money or college, so it says a lot about you that youre trying to shoehorn them into the conversation. some guy just said he finds this product too expensive on a youtube video, and you come in here and start calling people poor. bro, calm down

maschine mikro? korg montribe? roland sp-404 sx? Not all of them are as nice and do as much, but similar in that they they are synths/drum machines/samplers in more compact, portable sizes.

nice but it's a very expensive toy

good review as allways. i just cant think about it as a serious tool i need.. this is more about how it sounds then the price... (tenori-on gave me that lesson allready... ) there are so many cheap good and expensive hell good synthesizers on the market right now... no midi clock connection is a crime for this devise i have to say... i will take one in my hands and check what i can let this thing do... another question: how about using it as a sampler for live such as an looper? is it possible?

Sometimes while searching for anime you stumble upon old men reviewing obscure electronic gadgets. It happens.

Oh my friggin crap, that cluster engine. I need to find a vst to recreate that because I'm hella broke after buying a Juno 106.

Wow this is an amazing piece of tech! I'll definitely be picking up an OP-P sometime soon, thanks for the review!

I just can't understand spending the money on this vs. an iPad air and 3 dozen synth apps (many of them with pretty great sound, controls and customizations). Is it like owning a Moog...it's 'cool'?

If I end up traveling a lot, this would be great for portable music sketching along with a portable travel guitar.

by far the coolest screen ever on a synth

awesome review. but are you sure you can midi in? i'd really to buy it but i am not sure about midi in. can i connect a keyboard and play on a bigger keyboard? it's fine if i need to use my laptop as a device, but in some ways i need to have the possibility to play a larger keyboard

clock capability....fix it drop the price considerably..give the tape function more customize mastering.. maybe i will think about getting one...
@scaryfried13 жыл бұрын
you say a 4 track tape recorder - is it actually a tape recorder? as in, actual tape? or just a tape-looking interface.
@DivineZeal12 жыл бұрын
What would you recommend? im a synth noob and almost was won over.
@davebirney10 жыл бұрын
i wonder why they havnt come out with a cheaper midi only version. something like this would be perfect for controlling stuff on your laptop when your away from home. al the other small midi controllers that are out at the moment are too big. even the nano korg ones are very limited compared to this, unless you want to bring around all 3 of them
@FallingIslands13 жыл бұрын
This synth is totally amazing! I'm drooling!
@kassie2k410 жыл бұрын
Thats actually really cool, if it had tempo sync and you could access it as an audio interface it would be better. Also if it also saved all entered notes as midi files in addition to the pcm recordings of the synth it would be fantastic because you could use it as a little sortof lab, throw something together, and have the synth and midi data, and you could bring that into a daw and use some high end vst's or sidechaining on the midi tracks along with the synth recordings. I think that would be really powerful.
@parasiteunit11 жыл бұрын
There's some REALLY good features, I like that side of it... but I think considering what else is around to do similar things... for example, if you wanted record and add effects... a BR800 can be got for almost half of the cost of this. A basic synth (mono-tribe? Stylophone?!?! old casio?!!?) could be gained at the same time for less cost (price for both approx £430). I would go for multi-function/total usefulness than style anyday.

Would you say that it is possible to work with it as stand alone production device(record and mix all things with the OP-1)?
@scaryfried13 жыл бұрын
@BreakmasterQually people keep saying "tape recorder"! no one actually mentioned. i thought they could have fit a tape in there somewhere, would be kinda cool.

i suppose this is useful for jamming things out if you're a band on tour and have lots of free time on busses and planes where you otherwise wouldn't be able to jam but a computer with some decent software vst's and a nice midi controller is better value for the money
