I have done a lot of reading through the years about him and his story in truth will never be none because whatever he knew he took it to the grave with him, and just about anyone else who knew anything about his career, and the truth about what happened in his two fights with Muhammad Ali, are also long gone by now. In closing I think Ali did beat Liston straight up in the first fight in Miami in 1962 however the second fight in Lewiston Maine was fixed in my opinion however it will never be none because the two men who know are no longer with us!!!!!!!

Mate a chin is a chin. It does not gain muscle mass or build up resistance to a punch. Joe Louis weighed all of 201 pounds and thoroughly demolished 6"5/240 pound Abe Simon and the even bigger Buddy Baer, the brother of former heavyweight champ Max Baer. Sonny Liston was more Durable than Louis. He was the very definition of a human juggernaut. Impervious to pain( fought with a broken jaw in a full distance fight against Marty Marshall), possessed the biggest fists to this very day( gloves needed to be specially made for him), had the wing span of Lennox Lewis 84 inches ( Lewis 6"5 could be reached with much success by a jab as The limited but tough 6"2 Ray Mercer proved in their Madison Square Garden bout), underrated defensive acumen, a chin composed of U.S. grade A steel and probably the heaviest fists to be witnessed for a big man. He was also surprisingly quick/ limber on his feet during his peak years. His work on the heavy bag surpassed even Foreman in terms of its sheer force of impact. Liston was the perfect heavyweight and he was all functional muscle mass. He fought every style conceivable. I have absolutely zero doubt that Sonny would have knocked out Joshua( who still can't find a style) within 4 rounds, Wilder who is overrated and insulting inept in the basic fundamentals with zero defensive skills inside of 2 rounds, Fury by 8 rounds if not sooner and the rest of this modern sorry lot in short order. And I feel absolutely certain that he would have found the suspect chin of Lennox Lewis from behind that battering ram jab. I'm a solid admirer Of Lennox Lewis and have him in the top 5 but from looking at his biggest flaw( Lennox left his guard low and left his jab hanging out there after he threw it) and his vulnerability to a jab, along with his subpar recuperating abilities after taking a clean hard shot, loses to the durable Liston. A PRIME Cleveland Williams who was just as big as Lennox with quicker hands and a powerful puncher, could not dent Listons chin. I don't see Lennox having much success against a peak Liston. No one has gone through the top ten like Liston did in the history of the sport. He literally cleaned out the top ten as a rising contender in brutal fashion. The division hasn't seen anything like Liston until Tyson and even Tyson didn't have the intimidation factor Liston did. Liston was what Tyson wanted to be in terms of intimidation factor because Sonny was legitimate in that area.

If Liston had come along a decade earlier, he would have been champion for 10 years. With all due respect to the greatest overachiever in heavyweight history (e.g., Rocky Marciano), the 6'1" 212 pound Liston was simply too big and too strong for the likes of Charles, Walcott, and Marciano. If you add the fact that Liston had the greatest left hook (e.g., yup, better than Frazier), the heaviest left jab (e.g., Holmes had the better all around left jab), and a ridiculous 84 inch reach (e.g., Marciano had a 68 inch reach), the only chance of victory for heavyweights of the 50's would be to land a lucky/desperation punch. Having said that, the thunderous punching Cleveland Williams had two shots at putting Sonny to sleep, but all he could manage was to slightly stagger Liston in the 1st round of their 1st fight.

champions from the 50s were garbage heavyweights but contenders were great. Sonny Liston, Clevland Wiliams, Zora Folley. in the 50s these guys were monsters but in the 60s just old men.

More so in the 70'sthey we're still good in the 60's

@@lI_Demonata_Il because they fought one or two matches in 1970 does not mean that they were fighting in the 70s.

sonny was in his 40s in 60s and Clevland was shot twice in 1965 and had 7 operations lost his kidney and nerves on his left foot were gone. what are you talking about?

I’m here because I heard Liston was scarier than Tyson. Sorry I don’t see it

me me fear is a subjective thing honestly, depends on the individual. Many were scared of Liston the same way they were scared of Tyson but due to them coming from different times you can’t compare as no single individual fought both Liston AND Tyson

Tyson was more intimidating for sure. Way more bulkier and muscular and had the face of a pitbull.

Liston is highly over hyped. The heavyweights in his era were not as good. If they were, how did Floyd Paterson become their champion. All hype
