Compared to Ali rush looks clumsy. He is practically running away. Ali had such Speed , defensive reflexes and Lightning Combinations. He knew how to grapple and hold too. Rush hardly threw a punch Early.

Yeah Liston was an expert in the clinch and Ali was really good at neutralizing your work in the clinch. I wish refs allowed more clinch work like they did in this era.

So according to some of the expert naysayers in Liston bios who claim that Sonny Liston was 43 when he fought Ali (in 1964) that makes him 46 years old against Rush. Liston was recorded as 10 years old in the 1940 census, making him about 37 here. According to how he looks and moves in this fight- especially after Rush tried to tire him out for the first few rounds by staying on his bike - Liston being 37 years old (not 46) makes far more sense and is praiseworthy for his fitness level, punch resistance and punch power he clearly still had in '67.

Ali is obviously a far superior caliber of opponent than Elmer rush, so Liston would look better here. Liston never knew his exact age, and neither did his parents, so what they say in the census doesn't really matter. Liston also came into the first fight with a shoulder injury, and having hardly trained whatsoever because people expected it to be so one sided in his favour. the second fight is infamously rigged. I think Ali would beat him anyways because its a bad stylistic matchup for Liston, but he'd catch a couple times and hurt him, dropping him also.

You could tell The ref told Rush to stop running and fight, got tired of running along with rush 3:50,if Rush stuck to his game plan it may have ended better for him. but who knows with a prime Sonny!

Rush looked a little herky jerky at times sort of like Jersey Joe Walcott. Ali was more fluid and rhythmic.
