The Transformative Encounter: The Practice of Contemplation
In the current age this transformative encounter, as well as the practices that deliver us to this encounter and the personal connection that flows from this encounter, is seldom the focus of our lives. Many of us wander disoriented through life, often on a self-destructive path, in a world seen, understood, and measured primarily by the external environment. We are disconnected from the Connecting Myth. We are disconnected from the interior depth to which the Connecting Myth might deliver us. Ironically, we have come to understand myth as a lie rather than a symbolic and metaphoric gateway to a deeper truth.

This reality of Sono Mama feels really important to the evolution of the human family. To understand that the way I see the world, and the language I use to describe it, is just a copy of reality and not Reality itself. It is the screen through which I engage and interpret reality. It is not actual Reality. To be aware of this dynamic is fundamental to my growth and the health of our planet. It reminds me of the introspection illusion, that we can’t be objective about our own realities. We think we can be honest and authentic about ourselves, but we can’t, it’s an illusion. Because we only have a copy of reality. It’s important to question that copy, to question our thoughts. Otherwise I think I’m living out of the actual Reality, which is arrogant and incorrect. No one can do this. We can't stop seeing reality through a screen, it is the human experience. But if we try to understand this dynamic, we can, maybe integrate the parts. That there is one Reality, and there is me as a human being living through my screen of reality, and there is the entire relationship of the whole - that I am part of it and it is ongoing through me. I feel that this dynamic has been described by others. It also reminds me of Kierkegaard’s statement, that the self is a relation that relates itself to itself. The self is not the relation, but is the relations relating itself to itself. interiormythos.com/video/kierkegaard-rap/ I see examples of this today as human beings ignore or deny the way our modern lifestyle is damaging our planet and our species. Or how people ignore or deny the reality of the coronavirus. When I encounter these behaviors, I think to myself, what reality is this person living in? They are living in their own copy, in a fabrication of reality. And so am I! Being conscious of this fabrication feels crucial to being conscious.

Maryellen, Yes...yes...yes! When we walk in front of a mirror, our thought is often, "Oh, look at that reflection of "me" in the mirror. Ha. Ha. I am real, but the reflection is not quite real...it is a "reflection." So we think. But, the truth is that at shallow levels of consciousness we think our bodies, etc. are "real;" yet the Truth is, that the reflection is what is timeless and goes on forever. The rest, which appears real today in time, will soon be dust. Live in the Timeless Light!

Yep, but it doesn't NEED to be so that we pile up unneccessary ideas, identifications or concepts. However, our societies and upbringing have produced them and we soaked them up, we might need to perceive all that at first to let all that pass.. at the end it is very simple and we don't need even one framework like Zen to "understand" it. It may certainly help.. your mileage may vary :)
