Beautiful tone from those drums and the dynamics in your playing really show the versatility that acoustic drums still provide! As a drummer who used to play a “Phonic” series Sonor kit in the 80’s, I can attest to their build quality and attention to detail. I have heard these drums live and here the bass drum sounds as if it was stuffed with oversized pillow. The overall distinct character of these drums is also somehow "matte" and subdued. It's all a matter of personal preference though. Beautiful drums anyway!
@digitaldrumming4 жыл бұрын
Hi, well it's all a matter of heads/tuning, beater microphones & mixing :) well and the drummer of course... Although the Sonor vintage series is surely going for a more vintage sound (as the name indicates), I cannot confirm that this would be a sound flexibility limiting factor when setting up the kit. If you use a clear power stroke head on the kick, put a little pillow inside, tune accordingly & maybe even use a plastic/wood beater, I don't see how you couldn't get a modern / more aggressive sound out of it without any problem. Kind regards!

Hi Ralf! Was it easy to get these toms to sound quite punchy like you have in this recording? I really like how you got a great balance of having (what sounds to me) like quite a short sustain but still feel really warm - which is what this kit is all about. I've heard a few other recordings of these drums sounding quite boomy.
@digitaldrumming4 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul, tuning & the room play a big role for sure, also getting phase right with all the different mics on the kit is crucial. There is not too much eq/compression on this demo actually, just carved out some muddy frequencies here & there (as you would do in most cases when mixing drums). The room I am recording in sounds very good & is treated with lots of different GIK acoustics panels to deliver a natural room sound, which affects the sound of the stereo room mics & overheads mostly. And finally the great Audio-Technica mics that I am using exclusively for recording drums play a big role as well. In the end it's a pretty long chain that needs to be set up right when recording such a complex instrument. And I love that Sonor kit! :) kind regards!

Your playing is really wonderful to listen to, and your sound is so full and rich. How do you get that snare so rich and full, do you use extra plugins for that? Or do you master the mix or something?
@digitaldrumming2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Paul, a lot of the snare sound also comes from the OHs & room, and there is some eq/comp applied to the kit too, but nothing drastic. Also the mic & preamp selection shapes the sound quite a bit. Kind regards!

Is that the Sonor 4000 series pedal? How does it compare with a giant step or perfect balance pedal? Great sounding kit!
@digitaldrumming4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! The pedal works great, cannot comment on the others you've mentioned unfortunately as I haven't used those yet. I am kind of a hardware pragmatic ;) as long as I can set up the pedal the way I need it, I can work with it. I had actually used super simple budget Yamaha pedals from ebay with great results in my youth, and hardly ever felt the need for something more "complex" for a foot pedal. But that's just me, there are probably plenty of great foot pedals out there, that I have not yet encountered :) kind regards!
