The Sons of Confederate Veterans raised a 20-by-30-foot Confederate flag on an 80-foot pole along Interstate 40 in east Burke County. I made an appointment to tour the flag vault at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond. I was able to view and touch (with gloves) battle flags of a wide variety of designs. The largest was a CSA naval ensign. The most interesting? To me, there was one unit flag on which an artist had hand-painted the face of each member. Interestingly, the flags are not bulky. They are much lighter than I ever expected. Also, the varying methods used to attached the flag to its pole was surprising. There were ties, grommets, buttons, etc. These are al kept in a temperature controlled vault in the basement of the museum. Many folded in cardboard boxes lined with archival tissue paper. The more fragile, delicate flags are stored flat in large cabinets with pull-out drawers. Some of the larger flags are hung without tension. It’s one of the coolest experiences of my life.

THE CIVIL WAR The Civil War was about so much more then just slavery. It was between the North and the South. It was fought for Industry vs Farming, States Rights, Expansion, Slavery, Secession and more. Slavery was only one part. Everyone needs to go back to the History books. Our family’s Great Great Grandfather was a Confederate solder. He became a POW during the war and became very ill during that time. When he was finally released he was so ill he could not over come it and he died. As far as we can tell he nor any of our family never owned any slaves. He was a farmer fighting for what he believed in. He wanted the right to farm without industry or government telling him how-when-what. The States wanted there rights to say who-what-where-when. There will alway be politics and Republicans and Democrats. There will always be Governments. But the whole war was not just about slavery. And our Great Great Grandfather gave his life fighting for those rights. So when I see confederate statues, monuments or memorials being destroyed or being moved. It devastates us. It shows us that you don’t care for all life. It tells us our family and heritage means nothing! History is to learn from so that the things of the past are not repeated- not to destroy it. The past or history can NEVER be undone! Be better than the hate! Read your History! Study your History! Use common sense! Stay in School!

This amendment made it impossible to change the Constitution to give Congress power over slavery. No stronger protection for slavery could be imagined. Yet Southern states seceded anyway simply because like their colonial father's they wanted Independence and self-government. The North was essential to the origin and perpetuation of slavery it was not complicit in slavery it was foundational and continuing. Northern companies finance plantations shipped slave produced staples abroad insure them. Southern exports accounted for 75% of American exports. Throughout the Antebellum period the federal revenue came from the tax dependent on this vast Southern export trade. Northerners benefited from this because they benefited from the federal government. Slavery was a national wrong it was not a wrong peculiar to the South it was a national enormity. The North had no interest in emancipation with compensation or integration throughout the entire Antebellum period. There was no political party that advocated emancipation with compensation. The Abolitionist was a small but highly vocal group and they demanded immediate emancipation and uncompensated emancipation. That doesn't recognize Northern involvement in slavery. Integration was even further removed Northerners was strongly opposed to integration an took firm steps to keep blacks out of the states. The Constitution of Illinois for example forbade the entrance of any free black. Those already in we're not citizens of the state could not use the courts to testify against white person's to protect what they had an could not serve as jurors could not vote and her children could not attend public schools. King Lincoln never raised his voice against these black codes. Oregon's constitutional was virtually identical to that of the Illinois and all the Northern and Western states that one time another had very tight restrictions. The result was free black population of the Midwest was around 1%. King Lincoln won the presidency in large part with the platform that slavery should not be allowed in the Western territories. That quarrel was almost entirely symbolic in the territory of the Missouri Compromise Line where slavery was allowed there were only 17 slaves in 1860. After the line was abolished and slavery was left up to the people. The territories in state of Kansas had 56 slaves in 1850 by 1860 it had only 2. Pro-slavery groups we're trying to spread Southern political influence and Anti-slavery groups were preventing slavery an free blacks in Northern states. The cry for free soil and no slavery in the West was a code word for no blacks in the West slave or free. That really has to be stressed. Abolitionist Horace Greeley interpreted the Republican Party platform is declaring quote "All unoccupied territories of the United States and such as they may hear after a choir shall be reserved for the white Caucasian race. A thing that cannot be accept by the exclusion of slavery". Republic newspapers declared that the point of the Republican Party was to free the West from quote "The pestilential presence of the black man". King Lincoln also said that keeping slavery out of the territories would free them from quot "The troublesome presence of free Negroes". Jefferson argued that one way to affect emancipation would to use this Western territory to diffuse the African population.

@Kristen Valley King Lincoln supported the Corwin Amendment which was passed by two-thirds of both houses of Congress. This amendment made it impossible to change the Constitution to give Congress power over slavery. No stronger protection for slavery could be imagined. Yet Southern states seceded anyway simply because like their colonial father's they wanted Independence and self-government. The North was essential to the origin and perpetuation of slavery it was not complicit in slavery it was foundational and continuing. Northern companies finance plantations shipped slave produced staples abroad insure them. Southern exports accounted for 75% of American exports. Throughout the Antebellum period the federal revenue came from the tax dependent on this vast Southern export trade. Northerners benefited from this because they benefited from the federal government. Slavery was a national wrong it was not a wrong peculiar to the South it was a national enormity. The North had no interest in emancipation with compensation or integration throughout the entire Antebellum period. There was no political party that advocated emancipation with compensation. The Abolitionist was a small but highly vocal group and they demanded immediate emancipation and uncompensated emancipation. That doesn't recognize Northern involvement in slavery. Integration was even further removed Northerners was strongly opposed to integration an took firm steps to keep blacks out of the states. The Constitution of Illinois for example forbade the entrance of any free black. Those already in we're not citizens of the state could not use the courts to testify against white person's to protect what they had an could not serve as jurors could not vote and there children could not attend public schools. King Lincoln never raised his voice against these black codes. Oregon's constitutional was virtually identical to that of the Illinois and all the Northern and Western states that one time another had very tight restrictions. The result was free black population of the Midwest was around 1%. King Lincoln won the presidency in large part with the platform that slavery should not be allowed in the Western territories. That quarrel was almost entirely symbolic in the territory of the Missouri Compromise Line where slavery was allowed there were only 17 slaves in 1860. After the line was abolished and slavery was left up to the people. The territories in state of Kansas had 56 slaves in 1850 by 1860 it had only 2. Pro-slavery groups we're trying to spread Southern political influence and Anti-slavery groups were preventing slavery an free blacks in Northern states. The cry for free soil and no slavery in the West was a code word for no blacks in the West slave or free. That really has to be stressed. Abolitionist Horace Greeley interpreted the Republican Party platform is declaring quote "All unoccupied territories of the United States and such as they may hear after a choir shall be reserved for the white Caucasian race. A thing that cannot be accept by the exclusion of slavery". Republic newspapers declared that the point of the Republican Party was to free the West from quote "The pestilential presence of the black man"

The Confederate States seceded from the Union, thus forming it's own country apart from the U.S. The Constitution does not directly mention succession and it was not until 1869 that the Supreme Court determined it was illegal. Thus, those of the Confederate States fought for their country. Which, even that is somewhat wrong. The majority of slaves were owned by the wealthy and the affluent. The majority of those fighting for the Confederacy were the poor and rural people that had probably never been outside their home state. They considered the U.S. as an invading army.

@@SouthernRebels94 The Confederate flag stands for a country that betrayed the USA and existed for the purpose of preserving and expanding slavery. Their own reasoning for secession during the war was the election of Lincoln who they believed was going to attempt to contain of end slavery, both of which were unacceptable to the Confederates. Southern Newspapers, and speeches all reflect this with the cornerstone speech by the VP of the CSA saying the nation was founded on the idea that whites were the superior race. We also have the fact that the Confederate government was more centralized than the Union and it's people overall had less individual freedoms and states had less rights than they did in the Union. There's also the Confederate economic plan for when they won the war which would have saw the government industrializing the nation using slave labor in the factories instead of allowing private citizens to establish companies and use the rural poor and immigrants to work their factories. Plus the golden circle plan which would have seen the establishment of a slave Empire through annexing parts of Mexico and the Caribbean. Nothing about this flag stands for freedom.
